Phelps Chess Club Etiquette

Like other sports, chess has some basic etiquette which all players are asked to abide by in the spirit of good sportsmanship and civility. These rules are important and include the following: Before a game, players shake hands and greet each other. Talking should be kept to a minimum. Chess is a game of concentration and a quiet atmosphere is necessary. Speak the word (s) check or checkmate so that your opponent can hear you. Always use the touch move rule. Only touch a piece if you intend to move it. To adjust a piece, say adjust. When ending a game, say checkmate, I offer a draw or I resign. Win or lose, shake hands and thank your opponents. Be respectful in victory or defeat. Never do anything to distract your opponent or other chess club members. Stay attentive. Play with civility (i.e. honesty, integrity, etc.) When playing or observing a game that is in progress, never comment, distract. No kibitzing. Be respectful of chess boards, pieces, timers, and the library. Clean up your play area when finished. When instruction is needed, modified chess etiquette will apply.
