Elementary Lesson Plan

Objective: SWBAT know differences exist among individuals of the same kind of plant or animal. SWBAT know plants and animals need certain resources for energy and growth. SWBAT share information, observations, and ideas with others SWBAT identify characteristics of seeds using descriptive words (using 5 senses) SWBAT know the Sun is a source of heat and light. Grouping: Whole Group/ Small group Procedure: Monday: Materials: The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, 23 worksheets of The Tiny Seed, Chart Paper, Various types of Seeds TW read "The Tiny Seed," by Eric Carle TW explain how seeds and plants need certain resources for energy and growth. She will also explain how seeds and plants need the sun to grow. TW show students various types of seeds and explain how they are different. TW and SW discuss and review what a seed is and how seeds travel. TW and SW make a circle map using chart paper. TW explain to the students how the wind can help the seeds travel to different places using the Without Apology strategy. (Lemov Strategy) TW explain how the sun, soil, wind, and rain help the seeds. She will also explain how birds, mouse, weeds, and feet can hurt seeds. SW complete the worksheet "The Tiny Seed." Closure: TW will tell students now that they have learned what a seeds is,

tomorrow, they will learn about how many different ways seeds can travel from one place to another. Tuesday: Materials: "A Seed is Sleepy," by Dianna Hutts Aston, 23 Worksheet Booklets of "Seeds on the Go" TW read "A Seed is Sleepy," by Dianna Hutts Aston TW and SW build on the circle map that was created on Monday. They will discuss the different ways that seeds can travel. TW explain to students how birds can drop seeds from their beaks to different places. She will explain how a squirrel can hide seeds in different places for the winter. She will explain how the wind blows seeds through the air. She will explain how even feet can bring seeds from here to there. TW explain how plants needs lots of room to grow. She will explain how differences exist between the same types of plants. SW make "Seeds on the Go," books. Closure: TW will tell students now that they know the many different ways that seeds can travel, tomorrow, they will learn about the life cycle of a plant and what seeds and plants need to grow. Wednesday: Materials: 23 Life Cycle of a Plant Booklets, 23 What Do Seeds Need? Worksheets, Chart Paper TW and SW build on the circle map that was created Monday. They will read The Life Cycle of a Plant Booklet. SW circle sight words within the book. SW will decorate and color the book. TW explain to students what sequencing is and what is the beginning, middle, and end of a plant's life cycle. TW explain to the students that seeds need soil, rain, and sunlight to grow. SW do the "What Do Seeds Need?" worksheet. Closure: TW tell students that now that they have learned about the life cycle of a plant and what seeds and plants need to grow, tomorrow, they will learn about how a seed can develop into a plant. The will also sequence the different stages of a plant. Thursday: Materials: "From Seed to Plant," by Gail Gibbons, 23 Plant Sequencing Worksheets, Chart Paper TW and SW build on the circle map that was created on Monday. TW review what plants and seeds need to grow and how seeds can travel. TW review how plants grow out of seeds and how many different plants and

seeds there are. TW demonstrate and model how to complete the Plant Sequencing Worksheets during whole group instruction. SW complete the Plant Sequencing Worksheets. Closure: TW tell students now that they know how to sequence a plant and how a seed can develop into a plant, tomorrow, they will learn about the different types of plants and roots that they eat. Friday: Materials: "Taking Root," by Allan Fowler, 23 Plant Worksheets, Chart Paper, Planting Soil, Cups to Plant in, Various Root Vegetables, 23 Baby Carrots TW and SW review what plants and seeds need to grow and how seeds can travel. TW review how plants can grow out of seed and how many different plants and seeds there are. TW explain what a garden is and how everyone chooses what is planted in their gardens. TW explain how many different types of gardens there are. TW explain how we eat roots of different plants. TW explain how we eat carrots, radishes, and different types of roots. TW demonstrate and model how to complete the Plant worksheet during whole group instruction. SW complete the plant worksheet. TW and SW plant various root vegetables using cups and planting soil. TW give students baby carrots to taste and she will explain how carrots are actually a root of a plant and how they grow underground. Closure: TW tell students now that they have learned how plants and seeds grow and what they need to grow, next week, they will learn about insects. Assessment: Observation, student participation, student work samples
