census, Thomas was widowed, retired from farming, living with son Sylvester,
his wife and 4 children.40 In 1900 he was living in Independence, KS, with
daughter Olive, her husband and son.41

In May 1910, the one-month-widowed Mary Chester was living in home of son

Amanda [Niles] (46); two stepchildren: Eva (15) and Charles (12) Niles; two
grandsons: Clarence Smith (14) and Thomas Hanney (20).73 Simeon had three

(wife’s name Bertha), was employed as telegraph operator by Elgin, Joliet &
Eastern Railway.88 In 1920, Scroggins household: Edward (40, born CA),
Bertha (27, born IN), Edward A. (6, born IN), Mabel Louise (4 mos., born IN).89
By 1930 census, Bertha had remarried.90
