Lesson Title: Grade Level: Subject: CC/GPSs:

Storyboard Roundup 7 Grade Math

th

Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives

MCC7.RP.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin. MCC7.RP.2b Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships. MCC7.RP.2c Represent proportional relationships by equations. For example, if total cost t is proportional to the number n of items purchased at a constant price p, the relationship between the total cost and the number of items can be expressed as t = pn. MCC7.RP.2d Explain what a point (x, y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1, r) where r is the unit rate.

National Technology Standards:

Technology Productivity Tools a. use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. b. use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technologyenhanced models, preparing publications, and producing other creative works.

Long-Term Learning Goal or Outcome:

After completing this lesson, I want my students to be able to successfully carry out all operations related to proportional relationships, and be able to represent them using Storyboard That. Students will also be able to successfully and effectively use Storyboard That to display how to solve a problem of their choice. Using StoryboardThat.com, students will create their own storyboard that demonstrates how to solve a problem related to proportional relationships correctly and by getting a 4 in each category of the rubric.

ABCD Objectives or Outcomes:

Description of Assessment
Assessment Plan: The students will be given a rubric that will assess them based off of how they preformed using Storyboard That, as well as on how well they completed their chosen problem. Students must receive 4s in all categories to demonstrate that they have not only mastered the content in MCC7.RP.2, but that they can effectively use Storyboard That. Students will be given a list of 15 problems, and working with a partner they will choose a problem

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design:

and use storyboardthat.com to create a storyboard explaining how to solve the problem. Class starter and lesson connection: I will start the class off by having my Storyboard That exemplar projected for them to see, then go through some of the ins and outs of stoyboardthat.com. Students will be using all of the prior knowledge learned during this unit when they decide which problem to choose to solve. This lesson covers everything from the MCC7.RP.2 standard. Teacher and student activities: This lesson is mostly student-driven. We will have a day in the computer lab where the students can use Storyboard That to create their storyboard. My role is to help the students when they come across something in their chosen problem that theyre having a problem with, or to help with Storyboard That. This lesson is open to any aspect of the MCC7.RP.2 standard. The problems given to the students come from all of the different sections of this standard. Students will work with a partner as they solve their chosen problem and make it into a storyboard. Storyboard That will allow students with exceptionalities to explore their creativity within the subject of math. This also gives students who may excel more than others the opportunity to help their fellow students. Storyboardthat.com. This website allows students to create storyboards that look like comic strips. They will be doing this to visually represent how to solve a variety of problems covered in the current standard. Students will be given an instruction sheet with the list of problems on it. They will view my storyboard through the projector, and will use the computers in the computer lab to create their storyboards.

Reflection on Lesson Design

Future Actions : Explain how you incorporated information from the chapter and D2L modules into this lesson plan.

Without learning about Web 2.0 tools, I wouldnt have been able to find anything decent in order to carry out a lesson like this with my students. The extensive amounts of Web 2.0 tools are something that I will never forget because theyre so useful. Students love using technology in the classroom, and when it can be used effectively, its truly amazing. Ive learned that technology can provide that little extra bit of motivation that some students need. Students often think math is boring and hard, so knowing these Web 2.0 tools is very valuable to me. After considering this lesson plan, what will you do differently when you design the next lesson in light of your new understandings? This is the first time Ive had to fill out the Description of Activities with Technology and Materials section, and it was pretty difficult. I think next time Ill have an easier time filling this information out. I thought a lot of the information to be filled out in the lesson plan seemed a bit pointless, but now I see its necessary to get the full point of the lesson across. How does your technology artifact showcase design principles? Yes, it does. By using Storyboard That, all of the necessary information is contained within the tiles, making it easy for students to focus on the information within the storyboard. This applies to the law of continuity, symmetry, and Occams Razor. The storyboard, and storyboardthat.com itself, is very simple with little going on around the storyboard that could serve as a distraction. How does your technology artifact require students use of higher order thinking skills? The students are asked to apply a rule when they have to solve their chosen problem, construct a graph, table, or equation, describe their method of solving the problem by making their storyboard, diagram through making graphs, interpret graphs and tables, and solve equations. How does the technology in your lesson align to the content you are trying to teach in your lesson? The content in this lesson is about determining proportional relationships and the rate of proportionality, which involves the use of graphs, tables, and pictures. Having the students use Storyboard That for this allows them to visually represent their problems, which will help them and fellow students gain a better understanding.
