PGM117 802.3aq Pattern Generator with Differential I/O

The PGM117 card is a pattern generator and error detector for providing test patterns for testing to IEEE 802.3aq. The PGM117 features are identical to the PGM107 but it adds Differential I/O and the capability for full 10GE protocol

Input/output Specifications - The Blade has five 50 SMA connectors:

Name
DATA-

Description
Pattern Generator Data- Output Data- of the differential output with a typical Vpp of 0.4V at a data rate of 10.3125Gb/s. If this port is unused it should be terminated with a 50 load. Pattern Generator Data+ Output Data+ of the differential output with a typical Vpp of 0.4V at a data rate of 10.3125Gb/s. If this port is unused it should be terminated with a 50 load. To the left of this connector is a red LED. Under normal operating conditions, this LED is off. An on state indicates an unexpected operating condition and customer service should be contacted Pattern Trigger Output This connector should be connected to a scope when the user is analysing data patterns. The output voltage level is not user changeable and the typical Vpp is 0.8V. The Patt Synch signal is approximately of the complete pattern length selected. Reference Clock Output This connection provides a 1/64 clock output for use as a scope trigger or to provide a clock for the DUT. If both are required at once then a true 50:50 RF splitter should be used to ensure adequate voltage levels at both scope and clock. The output voltage level is not user changeable and the typical Vpp is 0.8V. Error Detector Data- Input Data- of the differential input to the Error Detector. The input data should be TBD < Vpp < TBD at a data rate of 10.3125Gb/s TBD. All patterns identified in IEEE 802.3aq are accepted. To the left of this connector are three LEDs: Error Detector Data+ Input Data+ of the differential input to the Error Detector. The input data should be TBD < Vpp < TBD at a data rate of 10.3125Gb/s TBD. All patterns identified in IEEE 802.3aq are accepted. To the left of this connector are three LEDs: Lock - lit green when the receiver clock is in a lock state Err - lit green when the input data is error free Synch - lit green when the input data is synchronized Reference Clock Input This connector is the input for an external 1/64 clock. This is used if the data rate is required to be different than 10.3125Gb/s. The input signal has to be TBD < Vpp < TBD at a data rate of 10.3125Gb/s TBD ppm To the left of this connector is a LED. It is lit when this connector is selected

Controlling the PGM107 802.3aq Pattern Generator
To select the pattern generator, use the arrows at the bottom left hand side of the screen to choose the Protocol Module. There are two screens for controlling this module: Basic Module Expanded Module To access either of these screens, choose the relevant tab from the left hand side of the Signal Configuration Tab. Note. If an application is running, it is not possible to access the control screen for this module.

Pattern Generator Choosing Pattern Generator Transmit Pattern

Using this pull down menu enables the transmit pattern to be changed. The following patterns are per the IEEE 802.3aq standard may be selected: Pattern Length Name Description (bits)

NOTE: Selecting any one of these options will result in the immediate change to the new pattern.

Pattern Inversion
Invert the pattern This will also cause the button image to change: If the pattern is inverted, repressing the button will turn off inversion and change the image back to the original:

Error Injection
Pressing the Inject Single Error Button will inject a single error into the pattern. Pressing the Inject Rate button and typing a BER will add continuous errors at the entered rate to the chosen test pattern. If errors are being injected, pressing the button will cause the image to change back to its default state:

Tx Clock Changing the Clock Source

This pull down menu offers three options for the source of the clock used to clock the data source. In addition, this clock is also provided from the Reference Clock Output SMA connector on the front of the module. This selects the internal clock at 161.1328MHz TBD MHz This selects the user provided clock (from the Reference clock Input SMA connector)

Adding Jitter
Pressing the Inject Single Error Button will enable calibrated jitter to be added to the clock. It will also highlight the checkmark on the button. Jitter addition is possible when the clock source is set to internal or external With the Enable Jitter button pressed, this option will add no additional jitter With the Enable Jitter button pressed, this option will add 5UI of jitter at 75kHz as specified in IEEE 802.3aq With the Enable Jitter button pressed, this option will add 1UI of jitter at 375kHz as specified in IEEE 802.3aq If jitter is being added, repressing the button will result in the clock being jitter free and the button image to change back to its default unchecked state:

Error Detector
Receiver is expecting the Transmitted Pattern returned to the receive side. Invert the incoming pattern

Statistics
The user interface allows the user to choose a statistic to monitor and set a gate time.

Statistic Choice
Using this pull down menu enables a statistic to be monitored. The corresponding statistic is displayed numerically below this menu. Statistics are accumulated and displayed at the end of the gate period One of the following statistics options can be selected to be displayed: Name Description Rx total bits Total number of bits received BER BER Bit Errors Total Number of Bit Errors Omission Errors Total number of omission errors Omission errors are defined as an error that occurs when a transmit 1 is received as a 0 BER (omit) BER of omission errors Insertion Errors Total number of insertion errors Insertion errors are defined as an error that occurs when a transmit 0 is received as a 1 BER of insertion errors

BER (insert)

If more than one statistic is required to be monitored at a time, two options are available to the user: Use the Protocol Module Expanded Module Screen Use the Applications BER Statistics Application

Gate Period
Using this pull down menu enables different gating periods to be chosen Selections : 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 30 seconds

PGM117 Hydra Blade - Datasheeet

PGM117 Hydra Blade Datasheet

For the gate periods of 2 seconds or longer, a progress bar is shown below the gate period pull down menu. This indicates how much of the gate time has passed Further gate controls are available using the application BER Statistics

Statistics Continued Indicator LEDs

Indicator LEDs are provided to indicate the status of alarms: Indicates the status of the pattern and whether there are errors Indicates the status of the error detector and if it is synched with the pattern Indicates the status of the received clock and whether it is locked The colour and position of the LED indicates the current and the historical status of each of these alarms: The left hand side is used to indicate current alarm condition The right hand side is used to indicate historic alarm condition Red us used to indicate alarm is currently active Green is used to indicate alarm is not active Amber is used to indicate alarm was historically active This can be demonstrated with the following diagram of the indicator LEDs:
Indicates there are currently errors (and as a result that there have been errors since the last alarm reset) Error Detector is currently synched, but had previously lost synch since the last alarm reset Received clock is locked currently and has always been locked since the last alarm reset

Touching anywhere on this LED window will reset the alarm history

Expanded Module

When this control screen is chosen, the basic module control screen is expanded to cover the majority of the screen and additional functionality is provided. The user is able to monitor four statistics simultaneously. The statistics offered are the same as those described in the Basic Module Control screen (which now occupies the right hand third of the Expanded Module Control screen). As with the Basic Module Control screen, the totals accumulate and then display at the end of the gate period. The gate period is controlled as per the Basic Module Control screen.

Remote Control - SCPI commands

All Hydra Blades can be remotely controlled via SCPI commands. Please refer to the Hydra SCPI Manual for the detailed instructions. .
