Question 1 (a) Three identical capacitors are connected in star and in to a 400V, 50Hz, three phase supply. If the line current is 12 A, determine the capacitance of each of the capacitors for both: (i) (ii) (b) (i) Star connection. Delta connection. [5 marks] [5 marks]

Three 12 resistors are connected in Y to a 415 V, 3 phase supply. Determine the total power dissipated by the resistors. [3 marks] The input power to a 3 phase motor is measured at 5 kW. If the rms voltage and current of the motor are 400 V and 8.6 A, find the power factor of the system. [2 marks] [5 marks]

What are the advantages of three phase systems over single phase systems?

Question 2 (a) (i) For a specific arrangement of bundled conductors, the following equation for its geometric mean radius is given by: Ds = 9(r d d)3 = 3(r d2) Sketch the bundled conductor arrangement that is described by the above equation, and indicate on it what is represented by r and d. [3 marks] (ii) What is the significance of calculating the geometric mean radius and geometric mean distance of bundled conductors of a transmission line system? [2 marks]

Sketch a two port representation of a transmission line, with appropriate current and voltage labelling. Hence state the current and voltage equations for such a representation. [5 marks] What length of transmission line is considered as short? For this length of line, what electrical quantities can be ignored? Hence sketch an equivalent circuit of such a line, and state the equations for the sending on voltage and current and line impedance. [6 marks] What length of transmission line is considered as medium? Sketch an equivalent circuit of such a line. [4 marks]

Question 3 (a) Draw the equivalent circuit of a practical transformer, showing and defining all the relevant voltages, currents, resistances and reactances. [10 marks] With the aid of a diagram, describe the function of a hydroelectric plant. Indicate the way in which such a plant copes with peak demands, and subsequent low demands. State the advantages and disadvantages of hydroelectric plants. [10 marks]

Question 4 (a) Draw a circuit diagram of a shunt connected DC motor, showing the relevant voltages, currents and resistances. Hence state the equation for the source voltage V in terms of the armature resistance. [5 marks] A 220 V supply provides a current of 20 A to a shunt motor. The armature resistance is 0.3 . Find the back-emf and power created in the motor when the field resistance is 150. [4 marks] What is meant by the term speed regulation of a DC motor? [2 marks]
