Topic or Unit of Study
Weather and Erosion.
Grade/Level Grade 4
KEY CONCEPTS & STANDARDS
Big Idea & Essential
Questions Students should know that weathering breaks down, while erosion is the act of particle moving.
Learning Outcome(s)
The learner will compare/contrast weathering and erosion.
The learner will use a ven diagram to place descriptions in the right location.
Summary
In this activity, students will work in partners to compare/ contrast weathering and erosion by putting description cards
in respective place on a ven diagram board.
Standards
CA- California K-12 Academic Content Standards
Subject: Science
Grade: Grade Four
Area: Earth Sciences
Sub-Strand 5: Waves, wind, water, and ice shape and reshape Earths land surface. As a basis for understanding
this concept:
Standard a: Students know some changes in the earth are due to slow processes, such as erosion, and some
changes are due to rapid processes, such as landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.
Standard b: Students know natural processes, including freezing and thawing and the growth of roots, cause
rocks to break down into smaller pieces.
Standard c: Students know moving water erodes landforms, reshaping the land by taking it away from some
places and depositing it as pebbles, sand, silt, and mud in other places (weathering, transport, and deposition).
ASSESSMENTS
Assessment/Rubrics
The students will be assessed when the teacher checks their ven diagram before they glue down their descriptions to
see if they understand the concepts. The teacher will look to see if students can sucessfully put descriptions of
weathering and erosion in their respective locations.
MATERIALS AND RESOURCES

Technology (handouts, etc.) -Ven diagram worksheets
-Description cards

IMPLEMENTATION
Sequence of Activities
1. The teacher will introduce the activity by telling students that they are going to play "Weather or Not?"
2. The teacher will then go over key concepts like weathering and erosion.
3. The teacher will go over the ven digram and what each circle represents.
4. The teacher will model and describe the activty.
5. Students will get into partners and sort the description cards onto a van diagram worksheet.
6. Once students have put all their cards on the diagram, the teacher will check to see if they have them all in the right
place.
7. Once the diagram is checked students will get their own diagram worksheet and cards to glue down onto the digram.
8. To close, the teacher will have a discussion with students asking of any were difficult to tell where they went on the
diagram.
Grouping Strategies
Students will be whole group at the beginning of the lesson while the teacher is modeling the activity and reviewing
topics. Then, students will work with a partner to work on the ven diagram and its parts. lastly, students will work
independently to glue on the description on their own ven diagram.
Differentiated Instruction
Students who need extra help might be paired with a partner who will assist them in their ven digram selections.
