Combination of two Classrooms!

This week, we encountered something very new to Dr. Capels classroom. Beth Standleys class had come over to combine our classrooms and to experience learning together. The size was a little big, but we all enjoyed getting to know one another from different Edu 175 classes. After working in groups to discover learning techniques for different age groups, Dr. Capel had taught us about three different schools and their techniques for teaching and disciplining the students. The first is Reggio Emilia. This school began in Italy after World War II and has a philosophy of an Emerging Curriculum. This meaning that the curriculum is based off of the students interests rather than the ways the teacher wants to teach. Group work is often encouraged as well as organization skills are put into place.

Montessori and Waldorf

Going into the next two schools, Montessori is up first! This school firmly believes in giving no tests or grades and that the most efficient way to get students learning capacities up is to have all ages in one class together. Montessori is a very natural materials school, where believing in the work of children is encouraged. Everything seems to be at the childs level. As we shift gears here, Waldorf is a little different than the previous two schools. Waldorf is an independent co-ed elementary school that was first founded by a small group of parents.

The number of schools have increased, where we are now looking to near 800 of them worldwide. Waldorfs philosophy is that the schools curriculum stimulates the mind with a full spectrum of traditional academics. Waldorf enhances the traditional learning of fundamentals also with a sense of connection to culture, moral, and spiritual values.

Response to Intervention (RTI)

I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit. John Steinbeck

With Dr. Capel being gone, on Monday, March 4th, Dr. Standley had taken it upon herself to teach us about what RTI is and the multistep process that schools use it for. Schools use it for providing services

and interventions to help all students. It is also to improve the early identification and support of students with learning an =d behavior needs, including the need for special education.
The goal of RTI is to prevent failure and make all students successful learners. Tier 1 students receive high-quality, scientifically based instruction. Tier 2 is based on small group interventions and tier 3 is for students with special exceptionalities where evaluations are conducted on the student.
