Professor Salvato Date: April 10, 2014 Topic: Geography: Continents & Oceans Content Area: Social Studies Lesson 1 Lesson Objectives

After looking at a picture of the seven continents and the five oceans, students will be able to label the continents and oceans on a blank world map. Students will be able to identify which oceans surround each continent. Students will be able to identify and locate where each of the seven continents are found and where each of the five oceans are found on a world map. CCLS/+NYS STANDARDS AND INDICATORS Social Studies Standard (NYS) #3: Geography Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the geography of the independent world in which we live-local, national, and global-including the distribution of the people, places and environments over the Earths surface. Indicator: This will be evident when the students identify and label the seven continents and five oceans on a world map.

English Language Arts Standard (CCSS): Speaking & Listening: Comprehension and Collaboration (SL.4.1) Students will engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. Indicator: This will be evident when the whole class participates in a discussion about the continents and oceans of the world.

English Language Arts Standard CCSS: Writing: Text Types and Purposes (W.4.2) Students will write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

Indicator: This will be evident when the students label the continents and oceans on a world map on a worksheet. Engaging the Learners The teacher will begin by showing a video clip on the seven continents and the five oceans. After this the teacher will ask the students if they remember how many continents are there in the world and how many oceans are there. Materials Worksheets Pencils/Pens Smart Board Picture of a world map Learning Strategies Group Discussion: This will be evident when teacher shows the students a picture of the world map and discusses the seven continents and the five oceans. This will also be evident when the whole class discusses where the continents are located and which bodies of water surround the continents. Independent Work: This will be evident when the students label the different continents and oceans on their unlabeled worksheet of the world map.

Adaptions Students who are learning disabled may complete the work with an assistance of a teachers aide or other resource person. The student who is a visual learner will have the world map labeled with the continents and oceans on his desk for reference.

Differentiation of Instruction Tier 1: Students will create a model of the Earth using a blown up balloon and will draw and label the 7 continents and the 5 oceans, as well as labeling the equator.

Tier 2: Students will be given a list of the 7 continents and 5 oceans and place it in the correct support on a piece of construction map.

Developmental Procedure Students will be introduced to the lesson by teacher showing the students a picture of the world map with its labeled continents and oceans. (How many continents are there? How many oceans are there?) Students will look at each continent and identify where it is located and what oceans surround it? (What continent do we live in? What oceans surround North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica?) Students will label and identify the continents and oceans on their worksheet. What continents are found in the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere? Students will look at countries and distinguish which continent it is? (Which countries are found in the seven continents?) Artifacts and Assessment Students will label the continents and oceans on the map without using a word bank and will alphabetize the continents on a worksheet. Independent Practice Students will fill out a Continents and Oceans mini book in which they will identify and label each continent on a different page with a provided work bank.

Follow-up: Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment

Direct-Teacher Intervention: The student, under direct intervention with the teacher, will use a world puzzle map to help the student reinforce continent locations and shapes. The teacher will work one on one with the student on a computer game that allows the student to complete the name of the continents and oceans.

Academic Enrichment: The student in need of academic enrichment will use the computer to research what Pangaea is and why the continents separated.
