From the Editors Desk

Its everyones favorite time of the year MAP testing. Our states standardized testing commences Tuesday, and will last that day and Wednesday of this week, and Tuesday and Wednesday of next week as well. The first week is Math, and the second is Communication Arts, with no Social Studies assessment included... Anyways, as many of you know, this year, Brittany Woods has allowed me to write the Wake Up during 1st period from the library. With MAP testing messing up the schedule, there will probably not be any Wake Up published on Tuesday and Wednesday of this and next week. Sorry about that, but still look in your inbox for editions Monday, Thursday, and Friday of both weeks and Im sure Ill have recaps of what I missed as well. Who knows, I might actually get some sleep, too... Sorry again, Gabe Fleisher Editor-in-Chief Wake Up To Politics wakeuptopolitics.com

White House Watch

The Presidents Schedule Today was the last day of President Obamas week-long Asia trip, (and because of time-zone adjustment) he has already participated in a signing ceremony for commercial agreements in Malaysia, before heading to the Philippines. His schedule for the day is done, and has already met and held a press conference with Filipino President Benigno Aquino. As I write, the two Presidents are attending a State Dinner, before Obama heads home tomorrow. U.S. Sanctions More Officials and Businesses in Putins Inner Circle The White House announced today that the United States was sending more sanctions to Russia over Ukraine, reaching seven government officials and 17 companies with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putins inner circle. The Obama Administration says the sanctions are a response to what they see as a failure of Russia to live up to promises made at an April 17 meeting in Ukraine, as both nations promises to make steps in hopes of deescalating the situation in eastern Ukraine.

Election Central
Barbara Comstock Wins Virginia Firehouse Primary Virginia State Delegate Barbara Comstock won the GOP nomination Saturday, sending her to a general election promising to be competitive. Comstock now faces Democratic Fairfax County Supervisor John Foust, in the race to succeed retiring Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) in the swing district. Both parties are expected to watch the northern Virginia race closely, in a district carried by Mitt Romney by just 1 point in 2012. While Foust was the only Democrat remaining for his partys nod, Comstock defeated five candidates in her primary, which used the firehouse primary system, where just 10 polling places are open, and voters go to the polls to cast a secret ballot before leaving. The 10th district Republican Party chose the system this year over a convention or the official primary administered by the state next month. 2016 Central: Hillary Clinton Speaks to HIPPYs Hillary Clinton speaks to a hippy conference today.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters, that is. Clinton addresses the HIPPY conference in Washington, D.C. today, to mark the 25th anniversary of an early education group she was first acquainted with in the 1980s, as First Lady of Arkansas.

Question of the Day

Fridays Question On Friday, I asked about the town of Bartlett, New Hampshire, where Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) spoke on Saturday. My question was...True or False: Bartlett, New Hampshire is named for Josiah Bartlett, name of the President in the TV show The West Wing? The answer is...true. In a bit of a trick question Bartlett, New Hampshire was indeed named for a Josiah Bartlett just not the TV Bartlett, but for someone with the name Josiah Bartlett nonetheless. The Granite State town was named for Josiah Bartlett, the real-life Governor of the state, as well as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The show portrays the real-life signer as the great-great-great-great grandfather of the fictional President (who also hails from New Hampshire). I wonder if they called him Jed, too... Only Janice Goodman answered correctly that the town was named for someone with the name of the TV show President. Props to Brad Chotiner and Marilyn Schapiro who answered but were, alas, tricked citing the Governor and signer in their answers.
