BatWatch. "Why Do Black Superheroes Fail To Sell?" Comic Vine. 15 Mar. 2013. Web. 5 Mar. 2014. <http://www.comicvine.com/profile/batwatch/blog/why-do-black-superheroes-failto-sell/90267/>. BatWatch, an online comic book blogger, created this blog about how come black superheroes are not popular in the comic book world. In the blog, he discusses to main points of his observations. The first point is that black superheroes are not relatable to the reader. The other point is that other ethnic groups are not as interesting as the white ethnicity because most of the consumers in America are white. This article was helpful because BatWatch included plenty of characters in the comic book world that were great examples of the two points mentioned earlier. This fits into my research because the article provides two perfect points to why there are not black superheroes. Although I am not just looking for black superheroes, but all minorities.

Berlatsky, Noah. "The Incoherent Backlashes to Black Actors Playing 'White' Superheroes." The Atlantic. 20 Feb. 2014. Web. 5 Mar. 2014. <http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/02/the-incoherent-backlashesto-black-actors-playing-white-superheroes/283979/>. In this article from the popular The Atlantic website, Mr. Berlatsky discussed about Americas backlashes on black actors playing white superhero characters. One of the major points he discussed in the article was the recent story of the African-American actor Michael B. Jordan being cast as the Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. The Human Torch has been a white character in the comic books, television shows, and films so that actor was an interesting choice. This article includes a few more examples similar to the one before. This article is useful because it not only shows that most of the characters in movies are white, but filmmakers are actually trying to change the original material to allow other ethnic groups to portray those characters. This changed my idea of my research because I was only looking for characters portrayed by white actors in films at first. Though now I also need to look into the fact that filmmakers are changing the characters to be portrayed by other ethnicities. This is not just happening in films now but also the comic books themselves. "Black Panther (T'Challa)." Marvel Universe. Marvel Comics, Web. 15 Mar. 2014. <https://marvel.com/universe/Black_Panther_%28T%27Challa%29>. This article discusses the origin of Black Panther. Black Panther is a superhero created by Marvel Comics and he was one of the first black superheroes in the comic book world, appearing first in 1966. This information was helpful for me because I was able to talk about a real hero that was African-American and would be perfect for their own movie.

Chad Heath This article does fit into my research because I am trying to find characters that are other races that could star in films other than the basic Caucasian characters. Chow, Keith. "Marvel, Please Cast an Asian-American Iron Fist." Racialicious- the Intersection of Race and Pop Culture. N.p., 26 Mar. 2014. Web. 5 Apr. 2014. <http%3A%2F%2Fwww.racialicious.com%2Ftag%2Fluke-cage%2F>. This article discussed the coming up television shows Marvel plans to release on Netflix. The shows are going to be about Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. The main point of the article was to have an Asian-American actor play as Iron Fist. Being brought up in an Asian mystical city and trained in various martial arts, Iron Fist could very well be Asian. This article takes the point of view that I made about having other ethnicities play as superheroes in television or film. This article is very related to my paper because it talks about the way Marvel Comics should bring other cultures into the superhero world. Gibson, Tracy. "The Politics of REAL." White SuperHeroes-Why Only Them?... 25 July 2013. Web. 4 Mar. 2014. <http://thepoliticsofreal.blogspot.com/2013/07/whiesuperheroes.html>. In this article, Mr. Gibson discusses that growing up he could never relate to any of the characters he read about like Green Lantern, Spiderman, or Thor because they were all white and he was black. Being black he was unable to relate on a personal level to any of the characters because they were different skin colors and had different lifestyles than each other. Although he still read the books, he was unable to relate to the character to draw him closer to the story. Mr. Gibson also brings up the fact that there are not any black males in television, movies, or even books. Some of this material was useful but then again some of it was not. The writer slowly began to steer away from the comic book area and towards late night talk shows. The article is somewhat related to my research but it simply does not have enough information about the storys topic. Harris, Paul. "Why Is Superman Still so Popular?" The Observer. Guardian News and Media, 06 Jan. 2013. Web. 7 Mar. 2014. <http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2013/jan/05/why-issuperman-so-popular>. This article discusses the Man of Steel film that was released into theaters in 2013. The fact that Superman has been popular for over 75 years is astounding. The article also discussed all of the Superman films over the years. The article discusses how each different actor portrayed Superman in each of the films. This article could help me with my paper because it talks about how WWII changed Supermans comic books and how he has changed over the years to adapt to the real world. Logsdon, Amber. "The Biggest Superheroes Of 2015 Won't Be White Men." PolicyMic. N.p., 27 Nov. 2013. Web. 8 Mar. 2014. <http://www.policymic.com/articles/74811/the-biggestsuperheroes-of-2015-won-t-be-white-men>.

Chad Heath This article talks about the upcoming plans for Marvel Entertainment. Marvel plans to have a couple of mini-series on Netflix, starring the black superhero Luke Cage, the blind superhero Daredevil, the master martial artist Iron Fist, and Luke Cages white wife Jessica Jones. A huge difference than the normal white all-American man as the superhero, these shows will star a black man in an interracial relationship and a blind man. This article tells me that Marvel is trying to change the fact that all of their characters in their films were white. I can definitely use this article in my research paper to show what the comic industry is doing to try and change up their ways. "Population of New York City 2013." World Population Statistics. 8 Aug. 2013. Web. 12 Mar. 2014. <http://www.worldpopulationstatistics.com/population-of-new-york-city-2013/>. This article was the census of the population for New York City in 2013. This article helped me show the ratio of Caucasians to other ethnicities that live in New York City. This helps prove my point that Spiderman could be another ethnicity living in New York City.

Palmer, Robert. "Lets Cast Some White Superheroes as People of Color Instead." InterrogatingMedia. 29 Apr. 2011. Web. 4 Mar. 2014. <http://interrogatingmedia.wordpress.com/2011/04/29/lets-cast-some-white-superheroesas-people-of-color-instead/>. This article was very helpful for my research. The article discussed why certain superheroes were white and why they were why. Mr. Palmer brought out a few reasons why Spiderman could be another ethnicity. One of those reasons was the fact that Spiderman lives in New York City, one of the most diverse places to live in the United States. The article also discusses about why the fans of comics are so attached to the mythology of the characters that have been the same for years. The world is changing, and there is no reason why they cannot cast someone of color to a white character.
