NASHIK: In a win-win situation, the desilting of Gangapur dam kicked off on Wednesday with farmers taking home 250 brass of fertile soil excavated from the dam. The dam was constructed in 1954 with an installed capacity of 7,600 million cubic feet (mcft). It is estimated that nearly 1,545 mcft of silt got deposited in the dam over the years. The removal of silt will restore the storage capacity of the dam. The agriculture and water resource departments have joined hands with the Nashik units of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI) and the Builders' Association of India (BAI) to desilt Gangapur dam. Chhagan The programme was launched on May 1-Maharashtra Day-in the presence of dignitaries including district guardian and public works department minister Chhagan Bhujbal, district Read more collector Vilas Patil and Nashik municipal commissioner Sanjay Khandare.
The state government, which has undertaken the desiltation programme under the Mahatma Phule Jal Abhiyan, will bear the cost of fuel required to operate machinery to excavate silt. Farmers will be allowed to take the soil from the dam free of cost.

"As of now, we have deployed six excavators to remove the silt. As work started only in the afternoon, only 200 tractorloads of silt were removed on day one. If excavation goes on for 45 days with no rain, we are hopeful of removing at least 180 mcft of silt," said Sagar Bonde of CREDAI.
