Learning Plan 1 By: Brittany Beitzell Title: Day of the Dead Skulls Concept: Culture Concept Questions: What

is culture? How is a culture expressed through its art? Established Goals: (Virginia Beach Art Objectives) 7.4 7.7 7.8 7.10 7.11 Students will use multiple forms of expression such as writing, verbal, and performance to interpret artworks. Students will use artworks as a primary source of historical and cultural understanding. Students will use various media and techniques when expressing ideas. Students will create artwork based on prior and new knowledge. Students will use critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to express ideas through art making.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION/LEARNING PLAN QUESTIONS How does El Dia de los Muertos represent Mexican Culture? ASSESSMENT Pre-assessment (What students understand prior to lesson) Brainstorm list- Give me a numbered list of what you know about Mexico or Mexican culture. What do you know about Mexican culture? Write these on Promethean board, and leave up on the board as an example. Ongoing assessment: (What students are learning- informal or formal) Students are learning that there are many features that define and contribute to a cultures individuality. Students are learning about Mexican culture and its specific artistic style pertaining to El Dia De Los Muertos. Informal- Teacher will conduct observation during the discussion and slides. Summative Assessment: (What students will learn) Students will learn how historical and cultural factors influence artwork. Students will KNOW: Identity, El Dia De Los Muertos, Calacas, Sugar Skull, Ofrendas Students will UNDERSTAND: All cultures have different customs and celebrate holidays in different ways. These customs become their ways of life and make up their cultural identity. Students will DO: Participate in a brainstorming activity to create a list of knowledge on Mexican culture. Observe print visuals on Day of the Dead Skulls, and view PowerPoint on El Dia de los Muertos. Examine examples of contemporary and historical Mexico, and Day of the Dead skulls. Create thumbnail sketches, and a final

drawing of their skull. Create a clay skull sculpture representing the day of the dead celebration, and will be glazed.

Key Criteria: Final Drawing grade on skull project and vocabulary Culture Skull using clay. Literacy- Artist statement about their skull. Sequence of Teaching and Learning 1) Ask students to give a list of what they know that relates to Mexico/ Mexican Culture. Students will brainstorm these ideas on paper at their seats. 2) Brainstorm a list of words or phrases relating to Mexico on the Promethean Board as a class. 3) Go over Ancient Mexican Civilizations, Olmec, Mayan, Aztec, Mexicos location in relation to the united States, Mexicos climate, the Mexican Flag and what it stands for, National symbol of Mexico, The Peso as Mexicos form of currency, The national spoken language of Spanish, Popular Mexican food and dishes, Migration of the Monarch butterfly to Mexico, Bullfighting in Mexico, Futbol in Mexico, Lucha Libre( Mexican wrestling), El Dia De Los Muertos(Day of the Dead), Ofrendas- objects placed on a ritual altar during Day of the Dead, Calacas- skeletons commemorating the dead during El Dia De Los Muertos, Sugar Skulls- Skulls and skeletons made of sugar or candy 4) Have students to write down 10 facts during powerpoint with vocab for good focus. 5) Teacher will discuss line patterns and shapes on the Mexican skulls. These patterns must be symmetrical. a) Student volunteers can come up to the board to practice making symmetrical patterns and shapes on the Promethean Board. 6) Students will practice from their seats and create two thumbnail sketches of skulls a) Students can use table folders or other resources as inspiration for their skull design. 7) Students will get teacher approval and create the final skull drawing on final paper, adding additional details and color. 8) Students will be given a ball of clay and a rolling pin at each table. Teacher will demonstrate making slabs that are no thicker than . Student will use clay tools to cut away a round portion size of their choosing to make up their skull. 9) Students will ball up pieces of newspaper to use as support in forming the underside of their skulls. Students will then lay their clay slab onto the newspaper and begin forming the facial features. 10) Students will use clay tools: Boxwood tool, Pin tool, Small loop tool, and Large pear-shaped loop tool to make marks into their skull to form the patterns and Day of the Dead design. 11) Students will glaze their skull using their final sketch as a point of reference. 12) Students will write an artist statement about the Identity of their skull and the skull design. Vocabulary: El Dia De Los Muertos, Calacas, Sugar Skull, Ofrendas, Resources/Materials: PowerPoint on Identity Day of the Dead, Table Folders of Day of the Dead skulls, Student devices with images for Day of the Dead skulls, Clay, Clay tools, Newspaper, Clay glazes, 81/2 x 11 drawing paper, light tables, colored pencils
