Concept: Culture Concept Questions: What is Culture? What do cultures commemorate? Established Goals: (Virginia Beach Art Objectives) 8.7 Students will use artworks as a primary source of historical and cultural understanding. (SOL 8.10, 8.14) 8.8 Students will explore an idea in-depth through the art making process. (SOL8.7, 8.2) 8.13 Students will use critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to express ideas through art-making. 8.9 Students will make conscious choices of media and techniques for expressive purposes. (SOL 8.1) ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS/ LEARNING PLAN QUESTIONS How do commemoration differ between different cultures and artistic expression?
ASSESSMENT Pre-assessment: (What students understand prior to lesson) Group work- Give me at least 3 things you know about Native Americans/ Native American Culture. Ongoing assessment: (What students are learning informal or formal) Students are learning about Native American Culture via multiple tribes, specifically the Hopi Tribe. Students will learn about how patterns and color symbolize meaning in a cultures art. Summative assessment: (What students will learn) Students will learn how historical and cultural factors influence artwork.

Students will UNDERSTAND
People celebrate their culture in many ways through their artwork. Native American tribes commemorate their culture through ceremonies.
Students will DO
Students will draw thumbnails of ideas for their Kachina doll. Students will decide whether to use modge podge on a plastic bottle, or use toilet paper rolls as the body. Student will draw a final drawing in their sketchbooks, color, and label the embellishments. Student will begin construction on Kachina doll body, then later add limbs, paint, and add accessories.
KEY CRITERIA:
Final drawing in sketchbook and vocabulary Final Kachina doll Literacy- Artist statement about Kachina doll.
