AgulA Swiss-Mongolian Jazz concert held in UB

The AgulA Swiss-Mongolian Music Exchange project is an initiative by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Arts Council of Mongolia for the 50th

Anniversary celebration of the Establish ment of Official Diplomatic Relations bet ween Switzerland and Mongolia. The project celebrates five decades of coope ra

tion in economic, development, education and culture between the two countries through a music exchange that presents a fusion of Swiss-Mongolian music in both

countries. The name AgulA is driven from the old Mongolian word for Moun tain and the As of the word represents the Alps of Switzerland and Altai Mountain of Mongolia as well as the long-lasting relationship between Switzerland and Mongolia. Relations between Switzerland and Mongolia date back to the second half of the 1950s, when the first Swiss companies established trade relations. Switzerland was Mongolias first non-socialist trading partner. It officially recognized the Democratic Republic of Mongolia on May 20, 1964 although contacts between Bern and Ulaanbaatar remained modest until the end of the socialist era. For the last decade, the Swiss agency for Development and Cooperation in Mongolia has invested in the arts and culture of Mongolia by supporting a new production Mermaid by the Puppet Theater of Mongolia, the Trash is not Trash, environmental education project of the Arts Council of Mongolia, and many others. The project aims to celebrate and enhance cooperation between Switzerland and Mongolia through artistic excellence. Two leading groups, Heinrich Kaenzig Quintet from Switzerland and Arga Bileg Ethno jazz band from Mongolia have been selected for the project. The artistic vision of the project would be led by Mr. Heinrich Kaenzig, the artistic director of the project. The AgulA music production includes a brand new album consisting of six new compositions by Heinrich Kaenzig and Purevsukh Tyeliman, four new rearrangements of each groups work, and a residency in Mongolia. A two night concert was held on May 29 and 30 at the State Opera Ballet Theater of Mongolia and there will be a tour in Switzerland. The partnership between Switzerland and Mongolia extends to co-producer of the AgulA music album on the Musiques Suisses label and the music presenter is Hugo Faas.
