05.1 You are designing a banked turn at an automobile racetrack. There are two requirements: 1.)
Cars that come to a stop are to not slide down the banking, and 2.) for safety reasons, the
maximum speed in the turn without spinning out should be 150 mi/hr. The coefficient of static
friction between the track and the tires is 0.400. What are the radius of curvature R and banking
angle ! with respect to the horizontal that satisfy these requirements?

05.2 A 12.0-kg object experiences a drag force due to air resistance. The magnitude of this drag
force depends on its speed, and obeys the equation F
drag
=(23.0 N-s/m)v + (3.50 N-s
2
/m
2
)v
2
,
where v is the speed of the object.

(a) What is the terminal speed of this object if it is falling due to gravity?

(b) At what velocity (magnitude and direction) is the net force on the object (gravity plus drag)
twice its weight acting down?

05.3 Consider a spring that does not obey Hooke's law very faithfully. One end of the spring is
fixed. To keep the spring stretched or compressed an amount x, a force along the x-axis with x-
component F
x
=kx bx
2
+ cx
3
must be applied to the free end, where k = 100 N/m, b = 700
N/m
2
, and c = 12000 N/m
3
. Note that x > 0 when the spring is stretched and x < 0 when it is
compressed. (Many real springs behave in a similar fashion.)

(a) How much work must be done to stretch this spring by 0.050 m from its unstretched length?

(b) How much work must be done to compress this spring by 0.050 m from its unstretched
length?

(c) How much work must be done to move the spring from being compressed by 0.070 m to
being stretched by 0.070 m, assuming the end moves with constant speed during the motion?

Homework 5 Spring 2014

05.4 Three boxes with masses m
1
= 3.00 kg, m
2
= 4.00 kg and m
3
= 5.00 kg are arranged as
shown in the figure. Box 2 and Box 3 are connected by an ideal massless string that goes around
an ideal massless pulley. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the table and the Box 2 is
0.240 and the coefficient of static friction between Box 1 and Box 2 is 0.800. A force F acts on
Box 2 as shown and all of the boxes are moving at a constant speed of 2.50 m/s; in particular,
Box 1 does not slide with respect to Box 2. Use g = 9.80 m/s
2
.

a) Draw a free body diagram showing the forces acting on the each box.
b) Write down Newtons 2
nd
law for each box.
c) Find the tension in the rope, the normal force between m
2
and the table, and the normal
force between m
1
and m
2
.
d) Find the magnitude and direction of (i) the friction force on m
2
due to m
1
, and (ii) the
friction force on m
2
due to the table.
e) Find the magnitude of F.
f) Calculate the work done by each force in parts c), d) and e) if the boxes move at
constant speed for 2.00 s. Assume that Box 3 does not reach the floor during this time.
g) Calculate the work done by gravity if the boxes move at constant speed for 2 s.
