Match Report;
Rohan Hala again the hero as Auckland win tight contest against Parramatta ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Auckland,NZ- The Auckland Pirates and the Parramatta Rams played out a tight and at sometimes dour struggle before Rohan Hala again injected himself late to get the home side over the line.
"It was good to get back on the winning ledger. It was ugly but we needed the win" said Coach Shayne Boyd after the game.
Defense ruled the day and whilst Auckland scored early through a short pass to Tight End Aaron Lawrence that would be the only score of the first half. Kurt Sorenson was returning to Auckland for the first time as Parramatta's Head Coach and he had rushed back Quarterback Trent Cannon from injury. But Cannon was not at 100% and it showed when he gave up an Interception after struggling to throw the ball down the field.
Auckland gambled on going for it on 4th and short early in the 3rd quarter. They were at the Rams 37,, too far out for a field goal and short enough not to punt. But Zach Clarke had struggled all game to run the ball and the Rams powerful D-Line stuffed up the run. With renewed energy Cannon was bale to go down town and find Jermaine Kearse for 34 yards. This helped the drive go 57 yards and on the 1th play Anga Barry ran in a toss to the weak side from a yard out.
The Rams gained even further momentum when Jharal Lelei offered up an interception on the next drive and not before long Ethan Ritchie had the Rams in front with a 42 yard field goal.
But once again it was time for Rohan Hala to make his mark. Proving to be a dynamic receiver out of the back field Hala had too much speed on the swing pass for the Rams and Lelei found him in the flat for 20 yards and the winning score.
