Section 1: History and Over-view on Hydraulic Fracturing

1. When did Hydraulic Fracturing first commercially applied? Name the field and well where
it was applied first. 5 marks

Section 2: Stresses in the Earth

1. Show an example calculation of over-burden stress, pore pressure, total vertical stress,
effective vertical stress, total horizontal stress and effective horizontal stress in the sub-
surface at a depth of 5000 ft. 5 marks
2. How much is the tensile and compressive strength of sandstones? 5 marks

Section 3: Modeling of Hydraulic Fracturing

1. Write the flow equations for an elliptical and constant width hydraulic fracture of constant
height. 10 marks

Section 4: Productivity of Hydraulic Fractures

1. What is the effective wellbore radius of an infinitely conductive hydraulically fractured
well? 5 marks
2. What is the skin and rate improvement for a well that had an initial skin = 0 but is now
hydraulically fractured with an infinitely conductive fracture length of 100 ft. Initial well
bore radius = 0.5 ft, re = 5000 ft

fracturing. 5 marks

Section 7: Proppant Transport

1. Plot the proppant permeability as a function of closure stress for the 4 types of commonly
used proppants in the industry. 5 marks
