Logarithm

Introduction
We are familiar with a simple exponential identitya x
= b. Here, 'a' is called the base, 'x' the exponent and 'b' the
result.
Now, just as we can say J4 =2, which is basically
another way of saying 2* 2= 4, we can say
l oga b = x
I t is another way of sayinga x = b
Thus alog or logarithm is an equivalent way of ex-
pressing an exponential identity and the following two ex-
pressions are completely equivalent
a x = b o l oga b = x
loga b is generally expressed aslog of b to the base a.
Generally, the base is taken as 10 in which case the subscript
for the base is not written.
Hence log b means l og10 b . Thus, i f no base is given
assume that the base is 10.
Rule 1
I f l oga b = x then, a = b
