American Studies 1Mr. DeMarco & Mr.

Bartram
A thesis statement:
tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of
the paper.
directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or
subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or
Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
makes a claim that others might dispute.
is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument
to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence
that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

Does my thesis pass the So what? test? If a readers first response is, So what? then you
need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.
Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the
body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. Its o.k. to
change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your
paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.
Does my thesis pass the how and why? test? If a readers first response is how? or why?
your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add
to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Instruction Example
Step 1: Answer the following questions:
a. What is the question?
b. What is my opinion?
c. What is my opponents opinion?
d. What forms my position?

Step 2: Write a sentence or two that answers ALL
of those questions.

Step 3: Make sure that your statement can direct
the rest of your paper, is specific enough that the
reader can clearly acknowledge your argument,
and can be argued by an opposing viewpoint.

Step 4: (If needed) Refine your statement.

Step 1: a. Should the New York Jets start Michael
Vick or Geno Smith?
b. The New York Jets should start Geno Smith
c. The New York Jets should start Michael Vick
d. Geno Smith is young and athletic which makes
him a viable option to become a franchise
quarterback. Whereas Michael Vick only has a few
years left in professional football.

Step 2: While Michael Vick is a talented and
experienced NFL quarterback, Geno Smiths youth
and athleticism make him the best quarterback
option for the New York Jets.

Step 3: The rest of the paper will provide evidence
that Geno Smiths youth and athleticism make him
a better quarterback option. The paper will prove
that Smith is young and athletic. It will then prove
that young and athletic quarterbacks have success
in the NFL because they become franchise
quarterbacks.
