CaseStudy20minuteAssessment

1. YouwillbeexpectedtopresenttheCasestudy,oneononetoaUKSCAAssessor.Youwillbegiven10
minutestocompletethepresentationwhichwillbefollowedbyupto10minutesofquestioning.AQuality
Assurance/Leadassessormayalsobepresentbuthe/sheistheretoobservetheassessor,notthecandidate.

2. ThecasestudyshouldoutlineyourdeliveryofStrengthandConditioningsupportforanathlete.Ithasto
reflectyourownworkwiththeathlete(ienotworkingtosomeoneelsesprogramme)andhastopresent
workthathasbeendone,(ienotplannedwork/projectedresults).

3. Thisshouldbeanoralpresentationusingappropriatesupportingresources(egMSPowerPoint),whichcanbe
submittedinelectronicformattotheofficebeforehand.Pleasenote,theversionyousubmittotheofficeis
foradministrativepurposeswillnotbemadeavailabletotheassessorsontheday.Youareresponsiblefor
bringingaversionofyourfilethatcanbeplayedonyourown,ortheassessorslaptop.MSPowerPointor
Adobepdfarethepreferredformats.Ifyouchoosenottodeliveryourpresentationelectronicallythenplease
informtheUKSCAofficetoenablesuitablearrangementstobemade.

4. Youarenotrequiredto,butmayalsobringadditionaldocumentation/evidencethatsupportsyourmain
presentationegactualsessionplans,whichcanbeshowntosupportanyquestionstheassessormayask.

4. Youshouldpresentyourcasestudyinalogical,clearstructurethatshouldcover,asaminimum,allofthe
competencypointslistedbelow:

Evidenceofanassessmentandanunderstandingofthesport/activity.Thiswouldtypicallyinclude,but
notlimitedto,akinesiological,metabolicandinjuryriskanalysisofthesport,acriticalreviewofthe
establishedliteraturerelatingtothesport/activityandanobjectiveassessmentofthecompetitive
level/demandsfortheathlete.
Objectiveassessmentoftheathleteandaninterpretationofthisassessmenttoprovideanevaluation
oftheindividualstrainingstatusinrelationtothedemandsofthesport,thecompetitiveandtraining
requirementsoftheathlete.
Evidenceofcollaborationwithatechnicalcoachand/orothersupportstaff.

PROGRAMMERATIONALEANDPROGRAMMEDESIGN
Presenttheprogrammerationaleasajustificationoftheprogrammedesignbasedontheneeds
analysis.
Presentanoverviewofamacrocycle(orlongitudinaltrainingplan)withmorespecificdetailand
evidencefromaminimumofa3monthwindow.
Illustratehowtheprogrammeisintegratedwiththetechnicalaims,technicaltrainingprogrammeand
thecompetitionscheduleand/orperformanceoutcomesasappropriate.
Evidenceofunderlyingscientificprinciples.

SESSIONEXAMPLESANDCONTENT
Demonstratehowthesessionsandthestrengthandconditioningcontentfitintotheoverall
programmeplan.
Presentsessionexamplesforalltheappropriateelementsoftrainingastheyoccurwithinthecase
study,whichmayinclude;

EVALUATIONANDMONITORING
Objectiveandsubjectivemeasuresofprogressandaninterpretationofthesemeasures.

WeightLifting20minuteAssessment

1. YouwillpresentoneononetoaUKSCAAssessor,whoisassessingbothyourabilitytocommunicate
knowledgeofthekeycoachingpointsofthelifts,aswellasyourabilitytodemonstratetoareasonablelevel.

2. AQualityAssurance/Leadassessormayalsobepresent,buthe/sheistheretoobservetheassessor,notthe
candidates.

3. Theassessmentissplitinto2,approximately10minutesections:

nd
lift,oneofthefollowing,randomlychosenClean&JerkorSnatch

4. Youwillbegivenlimitedopportunitytowarmupandthenaskedtosetupyourdemonstrationfortheback
squat.

5. Youwillbeexpectedtoverballydetailthetechnicalpointsofeachphaseofthelift,accompaniedbyphysical
demonstrationsshowingtheposturesandpositions,consistentwithyourverbaldescription.

6. Youwillthenberequiredtoperform3silentdemonstrationsofthefulllift,showingthefluencyofmovement.

7. Youwillthenrepeattheabovestepsforthe2
nd
lift.

8. Duringtheassessment,theassessorwillaskquestionsforclarificationandalsotoenableyoutoaddressany
pointsyoumayhaveomitted.

9. Aliftingplatform,squatstands,barbell,safetyclips,techniquediscs,broomstickorlightbar,andarangeof
discswillbeprovided.Thecandidatecansetupastheywish,foreachlift,fromtheequipmentprovided.

10. Theassessorisnotexpectingaperfectdemonstration,butacompetentreflectionofthetechnicalmodel.If
youareunabletodemonstratetheliftsduetoinjury,youareadvisedtopostponeyourassessmentuntilyou
arefitenoughtodemonstratefully,yourknowledgeandability.

11. Ifyouhaveapermanentdisabilitythatpreventsyoufromperformingallphasesofthelift,pleasecontactthe
office(assoonaspossibleandatleast7daysinadvance)withdetails/evidenceandalternativearrangements
foryourassessmentonthedaywillbemade.

Plyometrics,SpeedandAgility20minuteAssessment

1. Youwillbeexpectedtoprepareanddeliveracoachingsessiontoanothercandidate(20minutes)andwillin
turnactasanathletefortheirassessment(20minutes).
2. AQualityAssurance/Leadassessormayalsobepresent,buthe/sheistheretoobservetheassessor,notthe
candidates.
3. TheUKSCAAssessorisassessingyourcoachingskills(notyourskillsastheathlete),aswellasyourknowledge.
4. Assessors are looking for candidates to demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of the athlete in
frontofthem.
5. Theassessorwillstopyoufromtimetotimetoaskquestionsand/oraskquestionsattheendofyoursession.
6. Aselectionofstandardequipmentwillbeprovidedsuchas;speedladder;microhurdles;plyoboxes;medicine
balls;cones;tennisball.

7. The20minuteassessmentwillbesplitinto4sections:

PLANNING(45mins)
You will be shown a video clip of a sport and will be given time to watch the clip, identify the main
movementpatternsandprepareyourdrillsfortheassessment.

WARMUP(45mins)
Youwillthenberequiredtocoachtheothercandidatethroughaspecificwarmupforthesportthatyou
have just observed, with particular emphasis on the identification of the movement patterns and
preparationforthesessionplannedahead.

PLYOMETRICS(45mins)
Having identified the main movement patterns from the video clip, you will then be required to coach
plyometricexercisestoassistperformanceenhancementfortheidentifiedmovementpatterns.

SPEEDANDAGILITY(45mins)
Youwillthenberequiredtocoachspeed&agilityexercisestoassistperformanceenhancementforthe
identifiedmovementpatterns.

8. Plyometricsconsiderations:
SAFETY:Footwear;floorSurface;injurystatus
TECHNIQUE:Mechanics;posture/alignment;footcontact;amortisationphase
PRESCRIPTION:Sets&Reps;intensity;fatigue
SPECIFICITY:Movementpattern;musclegroups

10. If,duetoinjury,youareunabletoactastheathleteforanothercandidatesassessment,pleaseinformtheoffice
in good time (at least 7 days) ahead of your assessment so alternative arrangements can be made for their
assessment.
