Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is one of the worlds great pristine nature-based destinations.
Be greeted by sea lions basking on unspoiled white beaches, koalas dozing in lofty eucalyptus trees and pelicans soaring across shimmering lagoons. Kangaroo Island is a place that offers protection to huge populations of native Australian animals, as well as being a place of beauty and a place of escape. Australias third largest island, Kangaroo Island (or as the locals say, KI) has many large open spaces and is surprisingly diverse. If you traverse its 155 kilometre length youll nd soaring cliffs, dense forest, towering sand dunes, wetlands and massive arcs of bone-white beach. Remarkably, over half the Island is native oldgrowth bushland, with most of it being preserved and protected, thanks to an innovative responsible tourism program. This means the experience you have today will be the same as the experience enjoyed by generations to come. KI appears to have an endless amount of space, so youll always nd somewhere to call your own somewhere to enjoy a little quiet time and let nature soothe your soul. It may be wild in nature but dont underestimate the welcome. Some 4600 people live here, most of them primary producers, many descended from Islanders whove farmed the local land and shed the seas for generations. Visitors are asked to embrace this welcoming spirit by partaking in the Kangaroo Island Wave a friendly gesture of lifting your index nger to acknowledge passing cars. Towns like Kingscote, Penneshaw, Parndana and American River are places for relaxation and unrushed meandering, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Whether youre in town, in the country or on the fabulous coast, youll discover a real holiday spirit, not to mention accommodation options ranging from outdoor swags to lighthouse keepers cottages to super-chic retreats. Not surprisingly, being surrounded by fertile lands and rich waters, Kangaroo Island produces some of Australias nest gourmet foods. Just across the water, but a world away, adventurers should get ready to be amazed by the likes of freshly caught King George whiting, sheeps cheese, marron, a unique variety of honey and an exciting range of varietal wines. If that wasnt enough, discover a rich history, a thriving arts community and the famed Southern Ocean Lodge one of Australias most prestigious and exciting wilderness retreats.
Welcome to
There really arent enough adjectives to accurately describe the beauty of Kangaroo Island. In fact, words can almost spoil the moment. Even photos dont do this wildly gorgeous destination justice.
Issac Bober, Symmetry, Australia.
The Barossa... the perfect retreat for a romantic escape for two. We didnt want it to end.
Jessica, Aldgate, South Australia.
What did I like best about this amazing place? Can I say all of it? From the ferry ride over to the kids faces as they slid down Little Sahara and climbed the lighthouse to the magic beaches it was all so wonderful.
Rebecca, North Plympton, South Australia.

Where can I find a Kangaroo Island TOMM Visitor Exit Survey form?
Kangaroo Island is very proud of its Kangaroo Island Tourism Optimisation Management Model (KITOMM), and rightly so! It has received international acclaim and ensures that visitors are given the best experience, while maintaining the environment and culture of the Island. When visitors leave KI, theyre encouraged to complete a KITOMM Visitor Exit Survey. This allows the stakeholders behind KITOMM to learn from visitors, what theyve enjoyed and where improvements can be made. KITOMM Visitor Exit Survey forms are located at the Penneshaw ferry terminal, Kingscote Airport and the Kangaroo Island Gateway Visitor Information Centre.
FiRe DangeR
Kangaroo Island is, and has been, susceptible to bush res. On days of high re danger you need to think about where you will be for the day and what you would do in the event of a re. During Fire Danger Season there are strict conditions for lighting a re, including a campre. The Fire Danger Season is generally from 1 December to 30 April (however, this period can be adjusted according to seasonal conditions). All res are prohibited on Total Fire Ban Days. During Fire Danger Season, if you must have a campre the following restrictions apply: Campres must be contained within a 30cm deep trench and be no more than one-metre square in area. Barbecues and campres must be surrounded, around and above, by a four-metre cleared space, free from any ammable material. Barbecues and campres must be attended at all times by a responsible person equipped with sufcient water or extinguishers to put out the re.
All campres must be completely extinguished before they are left unattended. Make sure you have adequate water supplies with you to extinguish a campre if you intend to light one. At no time of the year is a wood-re allowed in a national or conservation park or Wilderness Protection Area.
you in areas of high bushre risk. Instead of bushwalking, go swimming or visit local attractions in low re risk areas.
Holiday accommodation
If youre unable to leave before a re is in the area you must stay inside a building while the re front passes. Buildings, whether they are weatherboard or brick, may protect you against radiant heat while the re passes. Being outside is deadly. During the passage of the re front, seek shelter in buildings, such as your holiday accommodation, and then move quickly to burnt ground.
BUSHFIRE DANGER
ON KANGAROO ISLAND
2. RESPONSIBILITIES
Be aware of restrictions on the use of gas BBQs and campres during the re danger season and on total re ban days, for further information contact the CFS.
Bushre Information Hotline 1300 362 361 (TTY 133 677) www.cfs.sa.gov.au
3. PLAN AHEAD
On days of Total Fire Bans, it is best to postpone a trip into the bush since the risk of a re starting and growing rapidly is extremely high.

Getting here
& AROUND
By coach Mainland coach return connections are available twice daily to/from Adelaide and Goolwa to Cape Jervis, to meet up with SeaLink ferries. Hire car or tour pick-up can be organised for arrival in Penneshaw. OnIsland connections are also available to/from Penneshaw to American River and Kingscote, while accommodation pick-up and drop-off can be arranged at both ends. By air Regional Express (REX) Airlines provide regular daily services to Kangaroo Island. Thirty-minute ights operate between the main terminal at Adelaide Airport and Kingscote Airport, which is located 14 kilometres from Kingscote.
exibility and peace of mind allowing you to take the car on unsealed roads but book in advance as there are limited cars available. The size of Kangaroo Island shouldnt be underestimated. Its Australias third largest island and takes two hours and 20 minutes to travel east to west, from Cape Willoughby to Flinders Chase National Park, and 45 minutes travelling north to south, from Stokes Bay to Vivonne Bay. Its much bigger than most people realise, which means you must plan your holiday to give yourself enough time to see the sites. There are nearly 1600 kilometres of road on Kangaroo Island. The major roads between Penneshaw, American River, Kingscote, Parndana and Flinders Chase are sealed, well-maintained and well-signposted but the remainder are unsealed and require reduced speed and caution particularly on corners and when approaching other trafc. However, these minor roads are pathways to discovery, marked with a faded sign, crossing through gorgeous farmland or thick, native bushland, before arriving at a little-known cove or beautiful vantage point. Kangaroo Island has a small permanent population so its impossible to keep the whole road network constantly maintained. From time to time some of the unsealed roads will be corrugated and in poor condition but this is part of the remote rural Australian experience. Youre encouraged to always carry a spare tyre in your vehicle. Fuel is available from Kingscote, American River, Island Beach, Penneshaw, Parndana, Vivonne Bay and KI Wilderness Retreat, near Flinders Chase National Park. LPG is available at Kingscote and Penneshaw. Its advised to ll up before heading out on a full-day of touring and be aware that fuel stations have limited hours, some closing at 6pm. Kangaroo Island wildlife is precious and protected, and often active at night! Many of the roads on Kangaroo Island are anked by thick bushland so animals can (and do) cross with little warning and in the case of larger animals at speed. When on the Island, play your part by driving with care and at sensible speeds, especially during dawn, dusk and night time this is for your sake and theirs. Native animals become blinded by bright light. Slow down, dip your lights and take time to observe the wildlife. During the day, be especially careful not to hit goannas basking on the warm roads. Please give consideration to other road users. People drive at different speeds, based on their ability, comfort zone or desire to see the Island at a relaxed pace.
Theres something special about getting to an island. Whether travelling by car, bus, ferry or plane, your adventure starts as soon as you leave home.
Getting to Kangaroo Island
By ferry SeaLink, Kangaroo Islands vehicle and passenger ferry service, operates every day (except Christmas Day) between Cape Jervis, Fleurieu Peninsula (two hours drive south of Adelaide) and Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island. Operating two large, spacious vehicle and passenger ferries, Sealion 2000 and Spirit of Kangaroo Island, SeaLink has four departures daily, with additional services during peak times bookings are necessary. The ferry crossing is a comfortable 45 minutes, with the spray of the ocean symbolising the beginning of the adventure.

distance behind trucks so that the driver can see you. Remember, if you cant see the mirrors, the driver cant see you. With care, you can enjoy all Kangaroo Island has to offer in a conventional vehicle. However, some visitors prefer the comfort of a fourwheel drive vehicle on the unsealed roads. Everyones very friendly on the roads and it doesnt take long to get caught up in the local tradition (dating back to horse and cart days) of waving at passing cars. To really look like a local, be sure to raise just your index nger. The Kangaroo Island Wave is a tradition that locals have carried on and visitors have embraced wholeheartedly. Its all part of the friendly culture of the Island. Turn to page 48 for a chart of distances and approximate driving times. Keep left and allow faster moving trafc to pass. If stopping to sightsee, ensure that your vehicle is not parked on the road, on a corner or over the brow of a hill. Please be aware of agricultural vehicles, particularly when approaching blind corners or on undulating, narrow and unsealed roads. These vehicles are often longer and wider than anticipated and require care when approaching and overtaking. Approach vehicles displaying oversize signs with caution you may not be able to overtake immediately. Keep a safe By coach A SeaLink coach service runs twice daily between Kingscote, American River and Penneshaw, connecting with the SeaLink ferry service. Passenger transfer services can also provide door-to-door transfers between towns and the airport. However, youll need to plan ahead and book these services. Touring the region Because of the size and diversity of the Island, a guided tour is an especially rewarding way to see the sights. Expert guides not only help you discover Kangaroo Islands best kept secrets, they can tell the stories of the place only a local would know. For a really intimate look at Kangaroo Island, try a private tour for small groups (usually two to 10). Private tours can be easily tailored around specic interests to make every moment count you might be interested in wildlife (even particular types of wildlife), cultural history, food and wine, birdlife or scenic highlights. Other specialisations and interests can also be catered to, such as surng, shing, marine tours and photography. Private tour operators often gain access to exclusive areas, so wildlife can be viewed undisturbed. They also make a point of serving gourmet lunches and teas at special bushland or coastal settings. Tours can last any number of days and be designed around a wider itinerary and even incorporate a selection of accommodation types. There is a wide range of tour companies operating on Kangaroo Island, enabling you to sit back and let someone else do the driving. Coach tours for larger groups and personalised fourwheel drive tours are also available.
Most operators will pick up from your accommodation, the ferry terminal or the airport. For a self-guided tour why not invite a fth generation Islander into the car with you? Island Intrigue is a self-drive audio guide written and narrated by Michael Buick a fth generation Islander. Its a must-have for the self-drive tourist, combining knowledge of a local with the exibility of being able to do your own thing. Cycling For those with determination and energy, biking can be considered but this decision should not be taken lightly. The Island is large (155 kilometres long) and careful assessment of your tness level and equipment should be made. Although, with a little planning, exploring Kangaroo Island by bike can be a great adventure, with magnicent scenery and plenty of camping spots along the way to rest those weary legs. Public transport There is no public transport or ofcial taxi service on the Island. However, there are transport services that you can book.

Innovative, passionate and fresh three words that best describe the people and the products behind Kangaroo Islands boutique food and wine industry.

Visitors to the Island have the rare opportunity to taste nature at its best. Local producers have been ercely protective of the clean, green character of the Island and for good reason. Today, a stunning array of foods are produced, from high quality dairy products and pure honey to gourmet ice cream and some of the nest seafood available in Australia. Youll have the opportunity to experience rst-hand the skills involved in making some of the produce, with many food producers running visitor facilities for tastings and sales. Vines arent new to Kangaroo Island, grown as far back as 1837, but it was only in 2001 that KI was declared an ofcial Australian wine region. Today, there are 30 growers in the region and around 200 hectares of vines, with visitors able to choose from 18 home-grown labels, ve of which are being exported to the UK, USA, Europe and Asia. A temperate climate ensures a long, slow ripening of the local grapes, resulting in wines packed with strong varietal fruit avours and intense colours. The overriding contribution to the avour development in the fruit is the (comparatively) small daily temperature variation during the ripening period, making the region truly unique. As always on Kangaroo Island, the main focus is quality and each new vintage produces more complex and distinctive wines that are representative of the Island. It would be unjust to leave KI without tasting a few of the local drops and there are plenty of opportunities dotted throughout the Island to
do so. A selection of Kangaroo Island wines are available for tasting at the Islands hotels, as well as cellar doors, local restaurants and cafs. Many of the local cellar doors are often hidden far off the main roads so be prepared to grab a map and plan your wine tour carefully but detouring down dirt tracks is all part of the adventure. On arrival youll be rewarded prepare to indulge your eyes, as well as your palate, with several cellar doors and restaurants enjoying remarkable views. If youve got questions about the wine or winemaking process, good news, theres every chance the winemaker is somewhere nearby. The Islands wineries and cellar doors are as distinct as their wines. A few highlights include: At Islander Estate Vineyards, you can tour, by appointment, the vineyards of Frenchman Jacques Lurton. Originally on his honeymoon, Lurton fell in love with Kangaroo Island and decided to stay. Here, nd out why he chose the Island to produce his premium wine range. Select wineries, such as Bay of Shoals Wines, Dudley Wines and Sunset Winery, serve up the very best accompaniment to any glass of wine gorgeous ocean views and the smell of salt air. For a family-friendly cellar door option, you cant go past Chapman River Wines on the Dudley Peninsula with a playground to keep the kids entertained. If you want to combine your cellar door experience with a memorable meal, put a few hours aside to spend at Dudley Wines, Chapman River Wines or Two Wheeler Creek Wines itll be a few hours well spent.

Wildlife
natuRaLLY
Kangaroo Island is the place where you can quietly go bush and see native Australian animals and birds as they were meant to be seen in the wild.
Kangaroo Island is a true wildlife sanctuary. Owing to its isolation from the mainland, the Island has suffered less from the impact of European settlement and retains more than half of its native old-growth vegetation a vast area of some 2250 square kilometres. Similarly, the Island has been spared the damage done by introduced species, such as
foxes and rabbits, ensuring the integrity of native bushland. As a result, animal and bird populations have ourished. Today, more than one-third of Kangaroo Island is declared conservation, national park and wilderness protection areas. Because of this Kangaroo Island continues to be a special and protected place, where you will be truly amazed.
Echidnas An egg-laying mammal occasionally seen in the understorey foraging for ants with its sticky tongue, you can spot the Kangaroo Island echidna by their distinctive blonde spine. During winter, echidnas form mating trains, where up to eight males follow a female around. Kangaroo Island kangaroos The Islands isolation has seen some species evolve differently from the mainland species. This is evident in the Kangaroo Island kangaroo a subspecies of the Western Grey kangaroo, which is smaller, darker and has longer fur than its mainland counterpart. Kangaroos and wallabies can be found across most of the Island. Koalas One of the Islands most famous characters, the koala (like the platypus and Ringtail possum) is an introduced species and their numbers have truly exploded. Unlike on the mainland, you dont have to try too hard to get your rst glimpse of a wild koala.

Australian sea lions and New Zealand fur seals Both species are native to Kangaroo Island and most famously seen in great numbers around Admirals Arch and the magnicent Seal Bay. At the latter you can join Park Guides on guided tours to observe these playful animals basking in the sun, frolicking in the surf and returning from their overnight shing expeditions. Over 7000 fur seals live and breed around Cape du Couedic.

Driving safely
Kangaroo Island wildlife is precious and protected, and active at night! Native animals are blinded by bright light, so slow down, dip your lights and take time to observe the wildlife. During the day, be especially careful not to hit goannas basking on the warm roads. Rosenberg goannas This magnicent lizard, which grows up to a metre, is a predator of smaller reptiles, young birds and eggs, and is often seen on warm days basking or scavenging on dead animals along the roads. Tammar wallabies The Tammar wallaby has smaller and ner features than the kangaroo and is abundant on the Island. Mainland populations are extinct in south-eastern Australia, with only a small population surviving in Western Australia. Other natives On your travels keep an eye out for Brushtail possums, Southern Brown bandicoots, Western and Little Pygmy possums, bush and swamp rats, six bat species, six frog species, Black Tiger snakes and Pygmy Copperhead snakes.

south and west coastlines. Many of the features along this part of the coastline carry French names as a consequence of this visit.
Kangaroo Island is steeped in history dating back to 1802 when the Island was first sighted by European explorer, Captain Matthew Flinders.
Aboriginal inhabitation
The rst European explorers found Kangaroo Island to be uninhabited, as evidenced by the lack of campres and tameness of the wildlife. Since the 1930s, Aboriginal campsites have been discovered in a number of areas around the Island, including one near the seal colonies of Cape du Couedic. Today, its believed Aboriginal people were living on the Island at least as long as 16,000 years ago (before the Island was separated by rising sea levels) and as recently as 2000 years ago. Why the Aboriginal people abandoned Kangaroo Island and how they left remains a mystery. Intriguingly, mainland indigenous people called it Karta or Land of the Dead. HMS Investigator. Flinders made the rst recorded European sighting of the Island in March 1802. He came ashore on the north coast, and named it Kangaroo Island in gratitude of the number of free-roaming kangaroos, which was the rst time his ravenous crew had found fresh food in months. On the afternoon of 8 April 1802, as the Investigator tracked towards the mainland, a sail appeared on the horizon. It was the French corvette, Le Geographe, under the command of Nicolas Baudin. Despite Britain and France being at war at the time, both parties soon realised that neither had hostile intentions. Information was exchanged about their explorations, with Flinders advising Baudin of the large Island nearby and the opportunity to replenish supplies with fresh meat and water. Baudin returned to the Island in the summer of 180203, mapping much of the rugged

place now known as Reeves Point. Several other ships soon joined the Duke of York. Passengers were Capitalists (as dened in the Company Prospectus) or carefully selected workers, many with families. Challenged by a shortage of water and building timber, the formal settlement was to last less than four years. At its peak, some 300 people lived there, and 42 dwellings and other buildings were constructed. Some persistent individuals stayed on and formed the basis of a community that prided itself on a strong sense of independence. Reeves Point remains a testimony to the hopes and aspirations of these early pioneers. In 1982, the site was placed on the South Australian Heritage Register. Poignant reminders of the early days include the rst European cemetery, the site of the rst post ofce, early house sites, original jetty remains and the mulberry tree that grew from a cutting brought out from England with the rst settlers.
The largest vessel to be wrecked off the coast was the 5800 tonne Portland Maru in 1935, which began taking water near Cape du Couedic before sinking close to Cape Torrens. One of the more notable, tragic events occurred to the Loch Vennachar, which sailed into cliffs on the west coast in 1905, with the loss of all 27 crew. Only one body was found and buried, unidentied, in the sandhills of West Bay.
boundary fencing, two dams, a small house and implement shed, and were required to clear and develop 800 acres for pasture. The cost of the house, shed and fencing had to be paid back over 30 years. The Parndana Soldier Settlement Museum provides an excellent insight into these times.
Lighthouses
The rst lighthouse to be built in South Australia was in 1852 at Cape Willoughby. The 27 metre high tower is now open for tours daily and provides spectacular views across the coast. Cape Borda Lighthouse, which forms part of Flinders Chase National Park, opened on 5 July 1858 a small cannon that stands nearby was used to signal ships of danger and to signal at one oclock so passing ships could reset their clocks. Tours of the lighthouse and museum are conducted daily. Nearby is Harveys Return, the old landing site for the lightstation and historic lightkeepers cemetery. Cape du Couedic Lighthouse was then opened in 1909. The remains of a jetty, water tank and storeroom can be seen at Weirs Cove, a spectacular site, from where the building materials and other supplies were hauled by ying fox to the top of the cliffs.
Shipwrecks
Since the rst recorded shipwreck in 1847, over 60 ships have been lost around the coast of Kangaroo Island, many with loss of life.

Few places in the world are as committed to sustainable tourism the same way KI is.
Kangaroo Island is protected through conservation zoning, wildlife reserves and heritage listings. But its also protected for the simple reason that Island people are dedicated to keeping it special, for locals and visitors alike. The reason you visit is the same reason residents love to live here. In 1997, the Kangaroo Island community drove the development of an innovative model to monitor the effect of tourism the Kangaroo Island Tourism Optimisation Management Model (KITOMM). Recognised across the globe, KITOMM monitors the long-term health of Kangaroo Island as a tourism destination by measuring a series of environmental, social, experiential and economic indicators. These in turn provide a raft of information about the positive and negative effects tourism has on Kangaroo Island. The information generated from KITOMM is then used to make better decisions regarding the health of Kangaroo Island as a tourism destination, all based on relevant information and knowledge. More than just a project, its a committed partnership between core government agencies who are responsible for managing Kangaroo Islands resources, as well as key stakeholders, including Tourism Kangaroo Island, DEWNR, Kangaroo Island Council, Regional Development Australia KI, the South Australian Tourism Commission, the Islands tourism businesses and the local community. For more information on
Travelling between places is part of the Kangaroo Island experience but remember wildlife is always close to the roadsides. Allow plenty of time to get to your next destination so there is no need to rush. Expect to see wildlife on or by the road so please slow down, especially at dusk and night, to avoid killing or injuring wildlife. If you spot something of interest, pull off to the side of the road in a safe location and observe from a distance. Feeding wildlife Please keep the local wildlife wild. Animals are quite happy to feed themselves because they know what is good for them, and quite often human food is bad for their health. Just remember observe, dont interact.

Surfers, shermen, wreck-divers, wildlife lovers and people who simply love to feel the sand between their toes, all relish the Island fringes. Just a few unique coastal KI treats in store for visitors are: The contrast between the rugged southwestern cliff scenery and the serene expanses of sand on the North Coast. The experience of having a beach all to yourself one that quite literally has no footprints, other than those left by little penguins returning to roost. The sight of kangaroos hopping out of the bushland at dawn onto clean white sands. The magnicent lighthouses the most visible symbols of a dramatic, and often brutal, maritime history. The sublime turquoise colour of the ocean that occurs when shallows wash over white sand. The perfect warm breezes to enjoy kite-ying. Birds
Kangaroo Island is a paradise for birdwatchers. Some 267 recorded species of birds can be found among a diverse range of habitats, including coastal cliffs, beaches and estuaries; heath and mallee; river and creek systems; and wetlands and lagoons. Duck Lagoon, Murray Lagoon and Pelican Lagoon are some of the better-known locations for birdwatching. Kangaroo Island is excellent for spotting waders and seabirds, while bush birds thrive in the large parks. One of the most prized sightings is the very rare Glossy Black cockatoo. Two of the Islands most famous avian residents are the little penguin and pelican. Little penguins are found around the coastline, living and breeding in burrows under shrubs, rocks and other sheltered places. Listen out for their noisy call, which can be heard at night. For an intimate look at these fascinating creatures, guided tours are conducted each evening at Kingscote and Penneshaw, excluding 121 February due to penguin breeding cycles. The pelicans feeding time at Kingscote makes for one of the noisiest and jolliest events on the Island. Every evening, visitors gather on the rocks to watch the local Pelican Man throw sh-bits to his very appreciative crowd.

American
American River is an interesting little town with its own unique story to tell.
RiveR
American River is a quiet, friendly shing village nestled on a hillside in native bushland and home to some 250 people, as well as countless Tammar wallabies. But its neither American, nor does it have a river. Its named after a group of American sealers who landed here in 1803 and camped alongside a narrow inlet from the sea at the time mistaken for a river. American River is a birdwatching paradise and a great place to savour some of the fruits of the sea not least, a dozen of the nest oysters, best enjoyed on the wharf overlooking Pelican Lagoon. With its calm waters its a great spot to go sailing and when the sh are biting, shing. The ocean is often dotted with a selection of boats just casually bobbing in the water. Out of the village, follow the coast via Nepean Bay to take in some spectacular views to the mainland and around to Kingscote a drive well worth doing.
watch a DVD demonstrating oyster farming techniques and their farm on and in the water, or sit back overlooking the bay and enjoy the take-away Chill & Grill lunch menu based on the Islands aquaculture products including oysters, marron and abalone year-round. American River isnt shy of an impressive stretch of coastline either. Just two kilometres off the main Hog Bay Road youll nd the spectacular Pennington Bay a photographers dream, superb surf beach and popular place for shing and swimming. But as with South Coast beaches, care must be taken, as Pennington Bay can, at times, be dangerous even for experienced swimmers and surfers. In rough weather, the southerly winds blow at gale force, causing huge waves that can be heard at American River nine kilometres away. One of Kangaroo Islands best kept secrets, Red Banks, is a stretch of interesting, coloured cliffs just ve minutes north of American River. Take in the views of the bay from atop of the cliffs, walk along the beach, or better still, view it all from a boat in Western Cove. Watching the sunset on the cliffs is a special experience. Please note: infrastructure at Red Banks is minimal so please take care, follow designated tracks and respect the environment. The sheltered waters around American River are home to some fantastic shing grounds. The best way to explore them is with a local wholl take you out in their boat to all the good spots to sh for a variety of species. The local operators have many years experience in shing around Kangaroo Island and supply bait, tackle and all your needs for a great day of shing. Scenic walks aplenty, exploring American River by foot is a rewarding way to see this region. The Beyeria Walk is a delightful short stroll through Kangaroo Islands narrow-leaved mallee, with broombush understorey. Beyeria Conservation Park was named after the endemic turpentine bush, Beyeria subtecta. The walk has 20 interpretive signs along the way, highlighting the many faces of mallee scrub. The Independence Trail walk follows the foreshore area between the southern end of town and Independence Point. It was here in 1803 that a group of American sealers built a boat using native timbers. The return walk takes a little over an hour.
Attractions
American River is home to a ock of endangered Glossy Black cockatoos. These can often be seen towards the northern end of town, between the general store and the post ofce. Other species of local birds include Cape Barren geese, various types of parrots and the ever-graceful pelican (in fact, the area was named by Nicolas Baudin in 1803 as Port des Pelikans). The morning and evening pelican y-pasts are not to be missed. Feeling energetic? Prospect Hill is the highest point in the area and well worth the climb. First climbed by Captain Matthew Flinders, the top of the hill was used by the famous explorer to survey the Island. There are 512 steps leading to a rewarding view across American River, Pelican Lagoon, the Southern Ocean and Pennington Bay. On a clear day, you can even see Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills. A little to the south of Independence Point, youll nd the remains of Muston Wharf. Here, see evidence of the only railway that has ever operated on Kangaroo Island, once used to bring salt from Salt Lake near Flour Cask Bay for export to the mainland. A range of mining and railway remnants still exist here. If youre interested in learning more about the history of American River look out for interpretive signs located at the American
River wharf, adjacent to the CFS shed on Tangara Drive, along the scenic walkway, Muston Hill Lookout and old Muston jetty site. There are several places in town where you can grab a decent bite to eat. If youre after lunch in a relaxed atmosphere, there is a lovely little caf at American River with the option of dining inside or out, while enjoying the views towards Island Beach. The menu is simple, yet satisfying and good value for money. Maybe an a la carte restaurant with vine canopied al fresco dining in summer or a romantic meal in winter? Relax with predinner drinks in an intimate reside bar before selecting from the chefs seasonally changing menu, featuring fresh Kangaroo Island seafood, including American River oysters and King George whiting, as well as an extensive wine list. American River is the home of the Islands oyster farming industry. The Oyster Farm Shop is the retail outlet for Kangaroo Island Shellsh (the operator of the Islands largest oyster farm) and is located across the road from the farm at American River. Youll nd all of Kangaroo Islands aquaculture and sustainable seafood products for sale when in season, including oysters (AprilDecember), marron and yabbies, abalone, whiting and smoked sh. Try a free tasting of sheoak smoked oysters in-store,
55
Departing from the northern side of town, the Fish Cannery Walk takes you on a fascinating coastal trail to the Historic Fish Cannery. Take a self-guided walk and look up the colourcoded plants identied in your own plant encyclopaedia. Flowers, seeds and woodcrafts are available for sale and a picnic area is provided in the garden. The North Coast is famed for its secluded beaches. Emu Bay is a beautiful, four-kilometre beach, with vehicle access onto the hard sand. Its one of the most popular spots on the Island with safe, clear water for swimming. Anglers can try their luck from the jetty or launch their boats from the access ramp. The jetty was built in 1916 and, until the early 1930s, was used for the shipping of grain, stock and merchandise. A barbecue, picnic area and toilets are available.

West EnD
People from all over the world flock to experience the wild, rugged and naturally beautiful West End.
If you desire peace and solitude, this is the place, and the ample wildlife is company enough. The native bushland is home to an abundance of wildlife, teeming with the likes of birds, echidnas and kangaroos, while koalas doze happily in eucalyptus trees above dont expect to run into much human contact away from the tourist hot spots. From the beautiful wind-swept sculptures of Remarkable Rocks, surrounded by a carpet of greenery; to the equally remarkable Admirals Arch; marvel at the underground wonders at Kelly Hill Caves, pristine Hanson Bay and the dense bushland in Flinders Chase National Park this is nature at her artistic best. In the accommodation stakes, the West End is home to the luxurious, forget the expense, Southern Ocean Lodge, perched high above a deserted coastline. But if youre on a budget, rest assured, there are accommodation options that wont break the bank. The region has a fascinating history, with Cape du Couedic, Cape Borda and Weirs
Cove all remnants of a telling past. Back in 1905, the doomed Loch Vennachar came to an unfortunate rest on the cliffs along the West End with all 27 crew lost at sea, and its not the only shipwreck to occur along this unforgiving stretch of coastline. At Cape du Couedic a lively colony of New Zealand fur seals frolic in the surf or doze on the rocks, unperturbed by the wild surf hammering the coastline youll nd that the pounding waves create a very relaxing, hypnotic feeling.

Attractions
Call into the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre, where the caf provides a wide variety of quick foods, including sandwiches and bakery goods, or more substantial sit-down meals using fresh local produce. Enjoy quality espresso coffee while dining al fresco in a bush setting or browse the well-stocked gift shop. Another authentic KI spot to eat is at the Nicolas Baudin Restaurant, located at the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat. Enjoy a memorable al fresco dining experience in a relaxed and natural environment surrounded by wallabies and other native wildlife. Flinders Chase National Park is home to two of the Islands most popular landmarks Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks. Visit the bizarre granite boulders of Remarkable Rocks, which have been in the making for 500 million years. A 10 minute drive away, Admirals Arch is a magnicent archway sculptured by the wind and sea and where hundreds of New Zealand fur seals play on the shore platform below. Cape du Couedic and Cape Borda lightstations are both found within the park. One of the best places to view sustainably managed wild native animals on Kangaroo Island is at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and its not just about the famous Koala Walk, many other wild species call the area home. During the day relax and stroll through the avenue of eucalyptus, spotting koalas, wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas and birds. At sunset, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary comes to life with informative, educational guided nocturnal tours that allow guests an insight into the natural behaviours of these wild native animals at a time when theyre most active. The small entry fee funds important conservation work on the largest privatelyowned sanctuary on KI. Before you leave visit the sanctuarys caf for a barista coffee. At Kelly Hill Conservation Park youll nd an amazing underground world of sinkholes and caverns thought to extend some nine kilometres. Some of the most spectacular caves can be seen on the daily show cave tour. If youre after an adrenalin rush, experience the thrill of crawling and sliding your way through Kelly Hills smaller caves. Hanson Bay is a popular surf shing area with large Australian salmon often caught along the spectacular sandy beach. At a rocky outcrop, a short way down the beach, a walkway leads to a second section of beach. For the more energetic, the spectacular Hanson Bay Hike begins here, meandering from Hanson Bay to Kelly Hill Visitor Centre. The 18 kilometre
hike passes through banksia heath, pink gum woodlands, mallee and coastal heath, travelling alongside freshwater lagoons and over dunes to viewpoints that provide wonderful vistas inland and along the coast. Allow a full day for the return trip (approximately eight hours) or arrange a pick-up. The spectacular North Coast cliffs of Cape Torrens and Cape Forbin can be seen from the magnicent vantage point of Scott Cove. At 263 metres, these are the highest coastal cliffs in South Australia. The drive to West Bay will take you through dense bushland, much of it regenerating spectacularly since the 2007 bushres. At West Bay itself you will nd a remote beach ideal for a brisk walk. Gazing out to sea, it is not hard to see why this isolated part of the Island has claimed many ships. A stark reminder is a grave just behind the sand dunes where a sailor was buried after the wreck of the Loch Vennachar in 1905. Camping, picnic and public toilet facilities are available. The West End has a diverse range of hiking and walking trails that are well worth the energy, including the Weirs Cove Hike, Rocky River Hike and Sandy Creek Hike. Linked with the Platypus Waterholes walk, the ninekilometre half-day Rocky River Hike takes you through the diverse habitats of Rocky River. Start from the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre or alternatively the trail can be started from the Rocky River Bridge on West Bay Road. Departing from Cape du Couedic Lightstation, Flinders Chase National Park, the two-kilometre Cape du Couedic hike provides spectacular coastal cliff top views as it meanders between the Cape du Couedic Lightstation and Admirals Arch car park. During the hike discover the varied and impressive techniques that plants use to grow here, nd out about Aboriginal connections with Cape du Couedic and how they survived in this harsh environment and contemplate the perils of being shipwrecked here 110 years ago. Look for the water pool built by the lighthouse builders and watch for those who still use it today. Imagine spending three months or more waiting for fresh supplies. Embark on the Weirs Cove Hike from Cape du Couedic Lightstation to Weirs Cove (three-kilometres return) to appreciate the life of a lightkeeper. Discover the method of landing people and supplies along this treacherous coastline. Starting at Snake Lagoon campground, the popular Snake Lagoon Hike winds through sugar gums and mallee before descending
into the Rocky River Valley. The trail crosses Rocky River and meanders along its bank to the mouth, providing spectacular views through the valley and across the Southern Ocean. Allow 1.5 hours for this three-kilometre return walk. On the Sandy Creek Hike follow the bank of Sandy Creek before descending into the creek bed for the last section through sand dunes and onto a large sandy beach. Here, time can be forgotten while relaxing and watching the Southern Ocean pound against the shore. Allow 1.5 hours for this three-kilometre return walk. The short Harveys Return Hike follows the original route used by the Cape Borda lightkeepers who hauled their stores up from Harveys Return using a horse and capstan (horsedrawn winch), and small rail cars. For geology enthusiasts, there are spectacular outcrops of tightly folded, thinly bedded schists. Below the capstan, the trail is very steep, so walkers should descend carefully. Starting at Harveys Return, the nine-kilometre Return Road Hike wanders through low sugar gum woodland, passing groves of native pine near the Lightkeepers Cemetery. Take a side trip when you cross the road for spectacular coastal views at Scott Cove. The hike follows the lightkeepers old cart track used for transporting supplies between Harveys Return and Cape Borda, which they called The Return Road. Look for cobblestones that indicate the alignment of the original track. The short one-kilometre Cliff Top Hike is the perfect complement to a guided tour at Cape Borda Lightstation. Meander through the picturesque coastal heath and observe how the vegetation changes as you near the cliff top. A stone lookout provides an ideal vantage point for spotting whales and dolphins frolicking in the Southern Ocean below. Follow the Billy Goat Falls Trail, located in the Western River Wilderness Protection Area, from the car park down the valley to the creek, where stepping stones lead you up a small winding trail through sheoak trees, to a lookout with spectacular views of a winter waterfall. The sheoaks provide a valuable food source for the elusive, endangered Glossy Black cockatoo. Allow two hours for this ve-kilometre return walk. The Ravine des Casoars Hike follows the ravine valley to the coast, passing along the creek bed and high above the valley oor, providing spectacular views. The French explorer, Nicolas Baudin, observed the Kangaroo Island emu here in 1802, mistakenly identifying them as Cassowary. Tragically, the Kangaroo Island emu became extinct at least 10 years before ofcial settlement in 1836.

South Coast
The South Coast is one of the most popular places on the Island and for good reason.
Its rugged, astoundingly beautiful and home to many of the Islands favourite attractions, including Vivonne Bay, once voted Australias Best Beach. Looking out across the sparkling turquoise bay, with the eet of shing boats waiting for their next big haul of Southern Rock lobster and King crab, is breathtaking. Just down the coast is the nations most accessible colony of Australian sea lions. Thousands of seals just casually hang out, rolling around on the beach or lazing in the sun. Theyre extremely friendly and come remarkably close to visitors this is one of the few places humans can get up close to the beautiful, playful mammals. For another unique animal encounter, between June and October keep looking out to sea anywhere along the South Coast and you might be lucky enough to see Southern Right whales and their calves.
Weave your way along red dirt tracks to get from one beautiful beach to another, nding sweeping panoramas and wild ocean views. The South Coast is a unique adventure, and if youre looking for an adrenalin rush simply go quad biking, horse riding, kayaking on the Harriet River, paintballing or surng the sand dunes of Little Sahara.

Located off the South Coast Road at Vivonne Bay, Little Sahara is an area of spectacular white sand dunes, surrounded by bush vegetation. Climbing over the rst ridge youre confronted by a second, much higher dune which, when scaled, reveals there are even more dunes to come. Take your sand board and climb to the top of the razorback ridges and enjoy a thrilling ride to the bottom. Theres no charge for your enjoyment of Little Sahara but please respect this environment and leave only footprints behind. Sandboards and toboggans are available for hire from Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action at Vivonne Bay or the Vivonne Bay Store. Slow the pace down and visit the nearby Rustic Blue Art Gallery & Caf, a serene gallery that showcases a collection of artwork, photography and jewellery, done by the resident artists, in a renovated shearing shed. Their work is supported by a unique range of Australiandesigned and created art objects and natural products. Enjoy freshly brewed coffee, herbal teas, a variety of light meals and platters on the deck overlooking the gardens and wildlife. The South Coast is depicted by its stunning, raw beaches incredibly inviting in summer and wildly beautiful in winter. Perhaps the most famous, Vivonne Bay, was once proclaimed the best beach in Australia after Sydney University Professor Andrew Short conducted a research study to unearth the best strip of sand Australia has to offer. Vivonne Bay is a long, curved, sandy beach superb for picnics, beachcombing, surng and shing. Experienced surfers can enjoy the wonderful turquoise waters, while fanatical shermen will appreciate excellent shing from the jetty, beach or the Harriet River mouth. The beach can be reached by taking the road just past the
Vivonne Bay Store. Safe swimming areas can be found near the jetty or the sandy-bottomed Harriet River that enters the bay nearby. On the other side of the river, Point Ellen provides photographers with spectacular views of the Southern Ocean sending its waves crashing onto the cliff face. Vivonne Bay is the only safe harbour on the South Coast of the Island and is the base for crayshing boats from November to May. Barbecue, picnic areas, toilets and camping facilities are all available. The secluded Flour Cask Bay is a great place to experience the raw power of the Southern Ocean. Enjoy sweeping views of the South Coast, salt lakes and dunes that house a wide variety of bird species and other wildlife. Bales Beach is the closest beach to Seal Bay. Take a walk around the sweeping bay towards the Cape Gantheaume Wilderness Protection Area. Picnic, barbeque and toilet facilities are located just a short drive from the beach. DEstrees Bay is an attractive and historic area that has seen the establishment of a whaling station and a number of shipwrecks. Today, its virtually unspoilt, with shore wading birds and pelicans feeding on the long stretches of beach. Spend hours exploring the large bay or drive along the coast to the south. The track is rough but passable with a conventional vehicle, and leads to a horseshoe-shaped cove, which is the site of a popular surf break.

On foot is one of the best ways to explore this section of the Island, with Murray Lagoon, Tadpole Cove Walk and Cape Gantheaume Coastal Trek all offering rewarding vistas. The Murray Lagoon is the Islands largest lagoon and offers three walks Bald Hill (one-kilometre), Curley Creek (11 kilometres) and Timber Creek (1.5 kilometres). All have great vantage points to observe bird life. In particular, Bald Hill has great vistas over Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park. This area is particularly attractive during winter and spring when the creeks are owing, bringing a great variety of waterbirds and waders to the region. A rangers ofce and basic camping facilities are located nearby. The short Tadpole Cove Walk combines unusual coastal scenery with early settlement heritage sites. The walk starts at an old grain-threshing oor, used by early settlers to process locally-grown grain, and takes you past the ruins of a small cottage dating from the same period. The walk then meanders through regenerating vegetation to a lookout above Tadpole Cove, which is named after an unusual rock formation in the centre of the cove. Watch for Ospreys soaring along the cliff edge as they hunt for sh in the calm waters of the cove. An overnight hike for experienced walkers only, the Cape Gantheaume Coastal Trek follows the spectacular rugged coastline, from DEstrees Bay Road to Bales Beach, with highlights being coastal cliffs and secluded bays. Note: trekkers to Cape Gantheaume are required to discuss their plans with national parks staff at Dauncey Street, Kingscote before beginning their trek. Adequate and appropriate equipment is essential.
