South West England is one of nine official regions of England.

It is the largest such region in area,


covering 9,200 square miles and
comprising Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset,Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of
Scilly. Five million people live in South West England.
Most of the South West occupies a peninsula between the English Channel and Bristol Channel
climate of South West England is classified as oceanic according to Kppen climate classification.
Oceanic climate characterized by cold winters alternating with warm summers and precipitation all year
round
The South West region is largely rural, with small towns and villages; a higher proportion of people live
in such areas than in any other English region. One of the largest city of this region is Bristol.
The name comes from the old English town where "Brigstow" means "place of the bridge." Bridge is still
the symbol of the city and attracts many tourists.
In Wiltshire there is a prehistoric monument called Stonehenge. One of the most famous sites in the
world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within earthworks.
In Dorset a beautiful beach that offers a magnificent view is Durdle Door Beach. This rock arch in the sea
was formed as a result of the softer rocks being eroded away behind the hard limestones, allowing the
sea to punch through them. The name Durdle is derived from an Old English word 'thirl' meaning bore or
drill.
Somerset is a rural county of rolling hills such as the Blackdown Hills, Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and
Exmoor National Park. Agriculture is a major business in the county. Farming of sheep and cattle,
including for wool and the county's famous cheeses (most notably Cheddar), are traditional and
contemporary,too.
Devon is an important tourist area.Nautilus is a beachfront residential complex in the region with 28
apartments whose design is inspired by the waves of the sea.
Cornwall has its own language, Cornish, and the region is known for its rich folklore, including the legend
of King Arthur and Glastonbury Tor, as well as its many centuries-old traditions and customs.The region
has by far the longest coastline in England, and is well known for its traditional seaside fishing towns.
There are only four higher education colleges. The region has the lowest number of people registered on
higher education courses at FE colleges.
