Palos Verdes CoderDojo Branch Proposal

I. Purpose
With the increasing presence of technology in our lives, it is imperative that students
are exposed to computer science at an early age, and that communities should offer
computer science programming to help foster interest in tech. However, no
elementary or middle school in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District
offers Computer Science classes at this time.

To fill this gap, I would like to start a Palos Verdes branch of CoderDojo to teach
programming in Java while providing a sociable, fun, and interactive environment
where people can collaborate and learn together. We want to establish an
enthusiastic community where people can learn from each other and openly share
their programs and ideas.

Anyone is welcome to join CoderDojo, regardless of programming experience.
However, CoderDojo and materials are targeted at young people between 10 and 17.
II. Program Description
CoderDojo is a volunteer-led, open source, and nonprofit global movement that
teaches children how to code, make games, develop web sites, and create mobile
applications. There are currently 408 dojos operating in 43 different countries. The
closest one to our community is in Los Angeles, around 18 miles away.
III. Team Members
We are a group of highly motivated students from Palos Verdes Peninsula High
School who have all taken Computer Science AP. Our passion for computer science
and tech inspired us to start a tech community for young people in Palos Verdes.

IV. Course Plan
CoderDojo will meet once a month in the library for 3 hours. Because CoderDojo
emphasizes learning in a stress- free, fun, and interactive environment, no sustained
lectures will be given; Our demographic, young people, have short attention spans
and will lose interest quickly. Instead, we will break up the teaching into easily
digestible parts, and reinforce them with carefully crafted worksheets that delineate
the topics of that day. Creative and thought provoking examples and graphics will
also be incorporated to keep attendees engaged and entertained. The CoderDojo
team will also be readily available to assist and encourage attendees.
