TASK#1
To understand the basic concept of computer network and its types, also
describe the over view of OSI layers.

NETWORK
In the world of computers, networking is the practice of linking two or more computing devices
together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware
and computer software.eg printer etc.

TYPES
There are 3 types of network.

LAN (Local area network):
Supplies networking capability to a group of computers in close proximity to each other
such as in an office building, a school, or a home. A LAN is useful for sharing resources like files,
printers, games or other applications. A LAN in turn often connects to other LANs, and to the
Internet
EXAMPLE: The most common type of local area network is an Ethernet LAN. The smallest home
LAN can have exactly two computers; a large LAN can accommodate many thousands of
computers. Many LANs are divided into logical groups called subnets. An Internet Protocol (IP)
"Class A" LAN can in theory accommodate more than 16 million devices organized into subnets.

MAN (Metropolitan area network):
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that interconnects users with
computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large
local area network (LAN) but smaller than the area covered by a wide area network (WAN).
The term is applied to the interconnection of networks in a city into a single larger network
(which may then also offer efficient connection to a wide area network). It is also used to mean
the interconnection of several local area networks by bridging them with backbone lines. The
latter usage is also sometimes referred to as a campus network
EXAMPLE:
Examples of metropolitan area networks of various sizes can be found in the metropolitan areas
of London, England; Lodz, Poland; and Geneva, Switzerland. Large universities also sometimes
use the term to describe their networks. A recent trend is the installation of wireless MANs.

WAN (Wide area network)
A WAN spans a large geographic area, such as a state, province or country. WANs often
connect multiple smaller networks, such as local area networks (LANs) or metro area networks
(MANs)
EXAMPLE:
Assume that the computers of a school district and library system are connected among the
various sites in order to share access to the Internet. The connections between sites are leased
from a non-telecommunications carrier such as a cable company and are the most cost-
effective means of accessing the Internet. The cost of leasing the connections is eligible for
support as Internet access so long as the service is limited to basic conduit access to the
Internet.

TASK#2
Describe the types of cable and connectors

Network Cabling

1. Coaxial (copper)

2. Twisted (Telephone)
UTP (unshielded twisted pair)

STP (shielded twisted pair)

3. Fiber (Fast)

ASSIGNMENT

RJ-45 (SOCKET CONNECTOR)

RJ45 is a registered jack standard for a modular connector using 8 conductors, which specifies
the physical male and female connectors as well as the pin
assignments of the wires in a telephone cable. The "RJ45" physical
connector is standardized as the IEC 60603-7 8P8C modular
connector with different "categories" of performance, with all
eight conductors present but 8P8C is commonly known as RJ45..

The RJ-45 connector is commonly used for network cabling and for
telephony applications. It's also used for serial connections in
special cases.

BNC CONNECTOR

The BNC connector (Bayonet NeillCouncilman) is a common type of RF connector used for
coaxial cable. BNC connectors are made to match the
characteristic impedance of cable at either 50 ohms or 75
ohms. It is usually applied for frequencies below 3 GHz and
voltages below 500 Volts.

It is used with radio, television, and other radio-frequency
electronic equipment, test instruments, video signals, and was
once a popular computer network connector.
