EXT. BURKE'S MOTEL -- STEAMING HOT DAY
A busted-to-hell 1941 Cadillac Sedan fights it's way up the
shallow drive way, not so much stopping as dying in the
nearest parking spot.
The OLD MAN, the "hombre blanco", climbs out of the old-as-
dirt car parked at this old-as-dirt motel.
He walks round to the back of the Caddy, looking even more
pre-historic in a parking lot filled with modern cars.
That's how everything in the part of Miami feels, pre-
historic. The bugs and alligators are the only things fit to
live in this heat.
He pops the trunk open revealing a BOUND AND GAGGED CUBAN
MAN.
THE OLD MAN
Come on, Tumelo. Nice and easy.
He hoists the bound and gagged Cuban man, Tumelo, out of the
trunk.
The Old Man pushes him towards the rooms.
THE OLD MAN (cont'd)
Number forty-four. Same as my wifes
IQ.
Tumelo stumbles forward, the heat and being cooped up in a
trunk, making him stagger.
The Old Man walks him towards the door. He pounds on it.
A clean cut PREPPY STUD opens the door and steps aside.
The Old Man pushes Tumelo into the room.
INT. ROOM 44 - DAY
In addition to the Preppy Stud, a bigger guy, dressed in a
short sleeved button down and pressed slacks sits on the
bed, this is MIKE.
The Old Man nods to him.
THE OLD MAN
Mike.
MIKE
Rupert.
(CONTINUED)
The Old Man, Rupert, points Tumelo towards a chair.
RUPERT
Take a seat.
Rupert wipes his brow.
RUPERT (cont'd)
It's hotter than an oven in here.
Turn on the goddamned A/C. Dennis?
He motions towards the Preppy Stud, Dennis.
DENNIS
A/C's broke.
RUPERT
Well, I'm sorry Tumelo. I know I
promised you some refreshing air
conditioning and a ice cold beer. But
fat chance of getting that fixed
before we talk about what we need to
talk about. Mike, we got any beers?
MIKE
Water.
RUPERT
Is it cold?
MIKE
Tap. In the bath room.
RUPERT
Shit. Looks like we're out of the
frying pan and into the fire on this
one, Tumelo.
Rupert wanders into the bathroom.
BATHROOM
Rupert runs the water, spalshes some on his face.
He fills a dirty glass with water as cold as he can get it,
and it ain't very cold.
He glances to his right and sees two, baddly beaten, and
absolutely fightened looking CUBAN MEN tied up in the
bathtub.

RUPERT
So foul and fair a day I have not
seen.
ROOM 44
Rupert walks over to Tumelo.
RUPERT
to Dennis ( )
Get that off him.
Dennis removes Tumelo's gag and unties his hands.
Rupert hands him the nasty glass of water.
Tumelo drinks it like it's the first sip of moisture he's
had in days.
RUPERT (cont'd)
Have a drink Tumelo. It'll set you
right.
Rupert sits on the bed beside him.
RUPERT (cont'd)
So foul and fair a day I have not
seen. You know who said that?
TUMELO
in perfect English ( )
Think it's from MacBeth. Shakespeare.
It's been a long time since I've
studied him. I'm not sure.
RUPERT
No, you're right. "So foul and fair a
day I have not seen." You see what
old Mac Beth's reffering to there is
the bloody battle he's just fought.
And won mind you. It's fair because
he was victorious over his enemies.
And foul because of the soldiers he
lost. I bring that line up because,
it just about so perfectly sums up
the situation we have going between
you and your friendsw in Cuba.
TUMELO
I don't have anything to do whith
that!

RUPERT
We're talking about bombing, maiming,
killing, immolatin', and hanging the
men who run a hateful, evil communist
regime that opresses her own people.
TUMELO
I am not a member of the resitance. I
never have been and I never will be.
RUPERT
But your family.
TUMELO
My family is not me. Now, I agreed to
come here. I agreed to be tied up. I
agreed to ride in that god awful
trunk. But I'm not a killer.
RUPERT
I believe you Tumelo. But my question
for you is...do you want to be?
