Public Health Information for EHPs
On Your Marks!
A year away from the general election and Public Health
looks like becoming one of many subjects that campaign
managers are trying to research before the big push. Ed
Miliband has certainly been quick out of the blocks
stating all the things a Labour government would do to
safeguard the nations health. Perhaps predictably his
plans to ban sports sponsorship by drinks rms and
aims to get half the population taking regular exercise
prompted certain parts of the media to roll out their
well worn nanny state headlines. From a Public Health
perspective I think there are two ways to look at it. First
at least its opened up a debate which Im sure the other
parties will want to enter into sooner rather than later.
The reverse though is that we are in danger of
politicians confusing the public even further on healthy
lifestyles and lets face it we have enough scientists
doing that already. There is of course room for a bit of
plain speaking but Im not sure any politician will want
to stick their necks out that far, well apart from one Im
sure we could all name! The bottom line is that as Public
Health professionals we are all in this to help people live
longer and more fullling lives but it would be naive in
the extreme to ignore economics. During my time in
Local Government health to 90% of local councillors
meant one thing, the NHS. Trying to explain that whilst
it is a marvelous institution its really only 10% of the
picture was a tough ask. I fear its still that link between
the wider determinants and the NHS that the public and
politicians fail to make. Its not about us and them its
about a holistic approach from which everyone can
benet. Lets face it its our taxes that prop up the NHS.
With that in mind perhaps instead of the Nanny State
headlines something like How to Save Money & Stay
Healthy might be a little more eye catching.

Stanley Says:
Lung cancer is the second most common
cancer in the UK among men and the
third most common in women. In
England and Wales there were
approximately 35,400 cases of Lung
cancer in 2009 with 30,000 deaths. The
highest risks from lung cancer are in
urban conurbations reecting past
smoking patterns and occupational
exposures such as asbestos. A smaller
contribution to the picture is thought to
come from exposure to air pollutants.
