1.1 Network Structure

The SURPASS hiX 5625/30/35 IP-DSLAM is a network element which includes the
necessary service adaptation functions to support the delivery of all types of
applications over Ethernet/IP networks.
The main components of a Next Generation Broadband Access Network are
xDSL Costumer Premises Equipments (CPE),
IP/Ethernet DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM),
Ethernet Aggregation Layers (EAL) and
Broadband Remote Access Servers (BRAS).

SURPASS hiX56xx is one element of this end-to-end solution; however NSN is able
to provide the complete Next Generation Broadband Access Network Solution, where
full interoperability is ensured.

The SURPASS hiX56xx IP-DSLAM operates as a multiplexer, which consolidates the
traffic originating from a number of subscriber lines to a feeder interface connected to
the Ethernet/IP network.
These subscriber lines can be:
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line),
ADSL2,
ADSL2+,
SHDSL (Symmetrical High Bit Rate DSL) or
VDSL2 (Very High Bit Rate DSL)

Subscriber lines of all different xDSL technologies can be mixed in one DSLAM.
ADSL technologies can achieve downstream speeds between 8Mb/s, in ADSL
variant, up to 25MBb/s in ADSL2+.
SHDSL can achieve symmetric speeds of 2,3Mb/s, in the normal mode, or up to
11Mb/s in the ".bis" mode, with 2 pairs bounded together.
Finally VDSL can go up to 100Mb/s on symmetric or asymmetric scenarios.

All together the xDSL variants offer a wide range of options that can be used in
different deployments scenarios to address the particular needs and requirements
from the end users.

1.2 Network Concept
The NGN concept is present in the NSN solution and the integration of different
services is a reality. Data, Voice and Video services can be implemented and
distributed by using the Multi-Services Access Network (MSAN) solution from NSN.

Traffic separation and prioritization is guaranteed by the efficient QoS mechanisms
available with the different products of the SURPASS family. Then based on a
extended L2 Bridging functionality or on L3 routing capabilities, along with a set of
other important features, like STP, ERP, LAG, MAT, VLAN translation, etc it's
possible to build an access and aggregation networks capable of offering Triple-Play
services to the end costumers.

The idea is to build a unique network capable of supporting the new services
emerging on the market, specially the ones oriented to VoIP and video contents, and
still maintain and support the legacy services existing today. This migration to the
"all" IP world has as a big concern the commitment related with the QoS issues, like
the traffic delay, the packet loss and the delay variation, or by other words, the
performance of the traffic inside the network.

A network capable of offering the same quality as the traditional circuit switching
solution plus all the new features and services added today is the big objective of the
so called Next Generation Networks.

The MSAN solution will answer to the new challenges that the Access and
Aggregation networks face today, providing an efficient response to the demands and
requirements of our customers.

The next two images illustrate this idea and focus on the MSAN solution, where the
IP DSLAM has a major role.

1.3 Protocol Structure
1.3.1 ADSL
Since access to IP Ethernet based networks is the main application of SURPASS
hiX5600, the support of L2/L3-based mechanisms needs to be provided.
The figure next page shows the basic protocol stack used when connecting to an
Ethernet based networks involving the CPE, the Ethernet based access and a
Remote Access Server as discussed above.
On the customer side, IP/Ethernet packets are encapsulated and segmented into
ATM cells and then transported to the hiX DSLAM. The DSLAM terminates the ATM
layer (on the ADSL unit) and forwards the Ethernet frames to the desired destination.
The DSLAM can also perform traffic classification, segregation/separation and
prioritization based on different parameters.
Fixed IP address assignment, as well as dynamic address assignment via PPP or
DHCP, are possible by using the relay features provided by the DSLAM to access the
remote servers.

TIP
Depending on the ADSL chipset (Conexant (4), Infineon (8)), up to 8 PVCs can be
implemented per DSL connection.

1.3.2 VDSL
In comparison to ADSL applications, today VDSL is the leading technology in using
packet over DSL; which means the ATM layer is omitted. Ethernet frames are
transmitted on the physical framing structure of the DSL line. Thus 10 to 20 % of
traffic overhead can be saved which was caused by the ATM protocol.
The next two images show the protocol stack of both ADSL and VDSL based
scenarios.

2.1 General Overview
The hiX56xx IP DSLAMs are offered in several variants that range from the single
board equipments, where all is condensed together in the same box, to shelf based
equipments, where the flexibility is the key aspect.
The single board equipment (hiX5620) contains all interfaces (xDSL ports, towards
the users and Uplinks ports, towards the aggregation network) on the same front
panel. Besides that also the Controller Unit, FAN Units and Splitters are combined
inside the single box.
This variant is mainly used for VDSL applications, where this equipment is deployed
outside the CO close to the final subscribers, in order to respond to the strict physical
loop restrictions that exist for VDSL deployment

Note that the hiX5620 variant will not be discussed further inside this course.
This variant is managed by a different ACI-E Element Manager and has as
different "look and feel" regarding the feature set configuration.

The shelf based variants range from the 5 Slot equipment, the hiX5625, to the 16 Slot
equipment, the hiX5635. Also available is a middle shelf offering 8 Slots, the
hiX5630. From the available slots 1 or 2 can be used to hold the CXU unit. This is the
controller for the all equipment that can also be used in a redundancy scheme. The
other slots can hold service boards for the different DSL scenarios.
There are 2 shelf variants available: M-type with a 1Gbps internal star bus; and G-
type, with a 10Gbps internal star bus.

All variants provide a common set of features including VLAN handling, L2/L3
support, Multicast and IGMP capabilities, QoS, PPPoE/DHCP Relay, DoS
prevention, etc. These capabilities enrich the platform offering efficient video and
content streaming for residential as well as corporate customers who rely on news,
entertainment and information streaming.

The hiX5600 family offers high flexibility in providing symmetrical services as well as
asymmetrical services, makes the access networks future-proof for rolling out all kind
of services starting with internet access and different types of video services, gaming
and peer-to-peer connections, and also provides a full featured access technology for
business customers with L2-VPN, leased line services and also VoIP.

Typical Applications provided via VDSL:
L2 VPN services over Ethernet
Ethernet access to L3 VPN

The main technical aspects related with the NSN solution are the fact that the latest
DSL flavors are supported and that the port density available through out the family
of IP DSLAMs is one of the highest on the market.
The introduction of the Voice Gateway to convert normal POTS to VoIP by using
H.248 or SIP is also a plus, along with the diversity of outdoor solutions. Besides that
a rich L2/L3 and security set of features like ERP, DHCP Option 82, IP/MAC Anti-
Spoofing, ACLs, BCSC, etc make the overall solution attractive and reliable.

The SURPASS hiX5625/30/35 IP DSLAM is a truly "Triple Play" capable platform
which complies with the most important prerequisites for an end-to-end Carrier Grade
Access Network. Some of those are listed below:

Physical Redundancy
Redundant Network Design
Reliable Network Operation
Reliable Service Delivery
End-to-End Service Provisioning
Guaranteed SLA & Prioritization
Scalable Equipment
Authentication, Encryption
Integrity check and Access Control

Connected to an Ethernet Metro Network, SURPASS hiX5635 is responsible for
terminating the ATM layer still present on the subscriber line (e.g. ADSL), and
assigning the right QoS/CoS to the different traffic types to guarantee the desired
end-to-end service as in the former ATM networks.
The next picture illustrates a typical deployment scenario for the hiX56xx IP DSLAMs.

2.2 HW Architecture and Shelf Variants
This section will cover the main topics regarding the HW structure of the equipment,
like the shelf types and variants, the pluggable service units, controller units, etc.
These multiple components can be configured on the different nodes, allowing a
flexible adaptation to the HW demands of each project.
The Line Interface Cards, the Controller Cards, with their control and switching
architecture, will be discussed in more detail ahead.
The idea here is to provide an overall perspective on the existing HW as well as
giving some additional information about the main components and specifications of
the products. A good overview about the different HW available can help decide and
plan the network deployment, considering all the details and problems that one can
encounter during that task.

Same of the main HW related topics include:
Shelf Architecture
Line Interface Cards (LICs)
Control and Switching Architecture
Power and Environmental Characteristics
FAN and Thermal Protection
Splitter Shelf
Rack Architecture

The next image offers a general overview about the three IP DSLAM variants
covered on this chapter, highlighting the main HW features on each one:

Before going forward and see in more detail each shelf variant, just a brief
information about the available shelf types for the hiX56xx DSLAMs.

There are available two shelf types:
M-type with 1 GE star bus (not prepared for the MSAN GPON)
G-type with 10 GE star bus. This shelf types are prepared for the MSAN GPON

For example, for the hiX5635 there are available several shelves, like we can see on
the table below. In this case the design and equipping of the shelf types M1100 and
G1100 is the same. The main difference is that the backplane of G1100 is equipped
with 10 Gbps links interconnecting the IU slots to the CXU, in order to enable the
future integration of PON IU cards.

The next table summarizes the available shelf types for the different hiX56xx
DSLAMs:

2.2.1 SURPASS hiX5635
SURPASS hiX5635 is a large size shelf IP DSLAM, for Central Office deployment,
offering a total of 17 Slots. It offers high port density and extended switching capacity
by using a different Controller Unit with additional capacity.
It can be configured with 14/15/16 Service Cards, depending on the shelf type used,
and 1/2 Controller Cards (CXU).

For the M1200 shelf, the available configurations include 15 or 16 Service Cards and
1 or 2 CXUs. The total slot number is 17 slots (Service boards and Controller
boards). The CIU is available on the top of the shelf and doesn't require any slot
spacing. This shelf type was the first one available for the hiX5635 but it will be
phased out. Newer HW designs are available for this high density DSLAM variant,
like the M110 or the G1100 shelf types.

The M1100 shelf type remains with the 1Gbps internal bus, but now the slot on the
right side is occupied by the power modules and CIU. This means only 14 or 15 slots
will be available for Service Cards. 1 or 2 CXUs can be added, depending if CXU
redundancy is used or not. The Controller Card (CXU) is plugged on Slot 9
(redundant Controller on Slot 10).

The G1100 shelf is also available for the hiX5635 and presents a 10Gbps star bus
architecture in order to be compatible with the GPON service cards. With this shelf
type, only 14 Service Cards can be used, independently if CXU redundancy is used
or not. Slot 9 remains as the primary CXU slot, and slot 10 is now reserved for a
redundant CXU (no Service Board accepted). The power unit and CIU remains on
the slot on the right side, like in the M1100 shelf type.

The next images will illustrate the three different shelf variants for the hiX5635 in
terms of shelf design and also regarding the possible slot assignment in each one of
them.

2.2.2 SURPASS hiX5630
SURPASS hiX5630 is a medium size shelf for remote or Central Office deployment,
offering a total of 10 Slots. It can be configured with 8 Service Cards and 1 or 2
Controller Cards. The CIU is also present in the bottom Slot. The Controller Card
(CXU) is plugged on Slot 5 (redundant Controller on Slot 6). Slot 6 is reserved for
CXU use, so in cases where CXU redundancy is not being used, this slot will remain
empty.
The available slot type is the M600 but it's planned a new shelf G600 for this IP
DSLAM variant.

The basic configuration of SURPASS hiX5630 comprises the basic shelf, fan module
and the splitter shelf. The basic shelf can be equipped with up to 8 ADSL2+ or
SHDSL service modules and two central switch fabric modules (active and standby).
The system requires separated splitter shelves or MDF splitters.
This IP DSLAM can also be linked to a number of other cascading subracks,
concentrating subscriber connections.

The SURPASS hiX 5630 subrack is designed to improve the number of subscribers
per system rack and can be mounted in 19 as well as in ETSI racks.
It is a front access subrack, meaning the interface connections are located on the
front of the plug-in modules. The ADSL2+ interfaces of the basic subrack connect to
the splitter subracks via DIN connectors. The splitter subracks are connected via DIN
connectors to the main distribution frame of the PSTN exchange to enable telephone
services (POTS) to pass through the copper wire pairs, with a/b interfaces.
Connection to the IP network uses the optical or electrical connectors directly on the
Switch Fabric Module (CXU-C/C2). A console interface for CLI access, as well as a
RJ-45 interface for outband TMN access is provided on the CXU Module.

TIP
SURPASS hiX5630 is (more-or-less) a smaller version of SURPASS hiX5635. It
offers the same Hardware, DSL and L2/L3 features as hiX5635:

In the next images it's possible to see in more detail the hiX5630 variant of the IP
DSLAM:

2.2.5 Cabinets and Outdoor Shelters for hiX56xx
The different shelf types we have seen before can be deployed in central office
applications or in outdoor scenarios, depending on the needs.
Typically the hiX5635 is used in central office applications, while the hix5630/25 are
more likely to be used in external shelters for space reasons. But, nevertheless all
equipments can be equipped in both situations, depending on the requirements.

The technical infrastructure of a central office is characterized by:
power supply 40,5 ...72,0 V (battery backed)
indoor conditions (environmental conditions)
clock distribution (T3, optional)
short interconnections to other equipment.
In a central office application the hiX5635 can be mounted in a 19" or ETSI racks.

The technical infrastructure of an outdoor location is characterized by:
power supply AC 110V or AC 230V
outdoor conditions
equipment is located in shelters
In the outdoor application the telecommunication equipment is located in a street
cabinet (shelter). The shelter is protected against vandalism and can be locked. Two
or three doors allows for separate and controlled access to the telecommunication
equipment and MDF.

The Outdoor infrastructure comprises the following:
street cabinet (shelter)
power supply AC / DC (redundancy n+1)
DC-distribution unit incl. fuses
batteries (backup time > 4 hours / 20 C)
additional equipment to dissipate heat (fans, heat exchangers etc.)
optical distribution frame or splice box
main distribution frame MDF (subscriber copper lines)

Using the hiX5635 shelf however, the maximum configurable subscriber lines are
delimited by the heat dissipation. The shelter could be used to a maximum of 700
Watt heat dissipation of the systems.

2.3.1 Control and Switching Unit (CXU)
The CXU is mandatory and needs to be present in every configuration. It
concentrates all the major decision points of the system and it's the responsible for
switching the traffic internally. It's also responsible for controlling the remaining
plugged boards in the system.

The switching board (CXU) is the central function point of the shelf and
includes the following main functions:
Uplink interfaces incl. uplink redundancy
Board controller
Power Supply incl. FAN powering/controlling
The CXU board can work in a stand-alone mode or in an active/ standby mode in
case of redundancy
SURPASS hiX5635 uses the CXU type B1, the hiX5625 and hiX5630 the CXU
type C.

According to the different port density of the shelves, there are two different CXU
types available (CXU_C and CXU_B). The first one is used for the hiX5630/5625 and
the second for the hiX5635. They have the same architecture and software structure,
which means the same features set. The difference lies in the number of switching
chips on the board itself. CXU_B has two 12Gbps chip sets (24Gbps), while CXU_C
has only one (12Gbps).
Newer CXU boards were in the meantime released, presenting updates in terms of
the switching and controller modules. These new boards continue to use the "C" and
"B" labels but they indicate the next generation of boards by using "C2" ad B2"
Ahead more details about these boards will be added.

There are the following CXU board types:
CXU_C2 (for M400, M600, G400 and G600)
CXU_B2 (for M1100, G1100)
CXU_B22 (for M400, M600, M1100, G400, G600, G1100)

The Central Switching Card CXU provides electrical as well as optical interfaces for
Uplink or cascading connections. The standard CXU configuration houses 4 x GE
(100/1000 Mbit/s auto sensing) electrical interfaces based on 4 RJ45 connectors; in
addition it has 4 empty SFP cages for optical interfaces. In total, 4 interfaces can be
active at the same time.
This means that if a SFP module (e.g. with an optical interface) is plugged and active,
automatically its associated electrical GbEth interface will be put out of service.
Optical SFPs for short and long haul are available; the electrical type (1000BaseT)
can also be used

The 4 interfaces (electrical or optical) can be used as uplinks toward the core network
or they are used either to cascade other DSLAMs or for connection towards a
collocated switch. A typical configuration could be 2 optical GE uplinks and 2
electrical GE links towards a cascaded/collocated DSLAM/switch.

Operating status LEDs on CXU_B/C
The central switching unit CXU_B/C is equipped with three LEDs to indicate the
operating status of the unit.
The meaning of the LEDs is explained in the following table:

The CXU_B also uses LEDs to indicate the status of each Ethernet uplink interface
(port 1 to 4). There are two LEDs for each port. These LEDs are used for line uplink
information such as link integrity and traffic activity. The green LED LNK displays
the line link status.

2.3.1.1 Newer CXU Types: CXU_B2/C2/B3/B22
Overview
The CXU_B2, CXU_C2, CXU_B3 and CXU_B22 are the new hiX56xx central
switching units. These boards keep the main characteristics as before and continue
to be used to switch the traffic and control the plug-in units inserted in the hiX56xx
shelves. CXU_B2/B3/B22 is the central switching and control unit used in the
hiX5635, while CXU_C2/B3 is used for the hiX5630 and hiX5625. Remember that
these boards offer several differences among them, the switching capacity that needs
to be enlarged for the bigger shelf due to the higher client port concentration.

The design of CXU_C2 is based on the CXU_C and the CXU_B2 is based on
CXU_B1. The new designs are mainly characterized by the feature reduced uplink
interface, the new family of Ethernet switches, a cost optimized controller core, cost
optimized clock synchronization unit, the possibility of clock synchronization by
received optical uplink and an adapted cost optimized supply.

The CXU_B22 includes the Ethernet switching design of CXU_B2 (BMC 56500) and
is able to support FAN control functions like CSU_c2. The board includes additionally
the possibility of packet based clock synchronization acc. IEEE1588. The CXU B22
can be equipped in M400/M600/M1100 and G400/600/1100.

CXU_B3 includes the Ethernet switch BCM 566510 to support virtual routing. All
other function parts are identical to the late parts on CXU_22. The CXU_B3 can be
equipped in M400/600/1100 and G400/600/1100.
The memory size of CXU_B3/CXU_B22 is 512 MB. Its bigger than the 256 MB RAM
present on the CXU_B2/C2. CXU_B3 also has extended Synchronization possibilities
(Timing over Packet).

2.3.2.1 ADSL Service Module
The ADSL2+ service module can provide simultaneously ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+ on
a port basis and can accommodate up to 48/72 subscribers. The ADSL2+ service
module is fully compliant with ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, ITU-T G.992.1, ITU-T G.992.2,
G.992.3, ITU-T G.992.5

ADSL
Under the ADSL standards ADSL ports can reach in downstream direction a data
rate from 32 kbps up to 8160 kbps and can reach a data rate of 32 kbps to 896 kbps
in upstream direction. The line rates are set with a 32 kbps granularity. The
IU_ADSL72 plug-in units support an upstream rate of up to 1024 kbps.

The following main features are supported:
48/72 ADSL interfaces per service module
Support of ADSL over POTS / ISDN
Automatic recognition of ADSL transmission standard (ANSI or ITU-T)
Line coding: DMT
Fast or interleaved mode can be configured for each ADSL line with configurable
interleaving depth

ADSL2
The IU_ADSL72 type for Annex A and the IU_ADSL72 type for Annex B support
ADSL2 under ITU-T G.992.3 (Annex A respectively Annex B). This enables ADSL
ports to reach a data rate in downstream direction between 32 kbps and 11,000 kbps,
and a data rate between 32 kbps and 1500 kbps in upstream direction. The line rates
are set with a 4 kbps granularity.
Under ADSL2 the IU_ADSL72 type for Annex A also supports G.992.3 Annex L
(longreach). Annex L can be used to extend the reach of a POTS connection (in
conjunction with Annex A), by increasing the dBm/Hz output, but decreasing the
width of the data rate used. The IU_ADSL72 type for Annex A supports Annex L
mode 1 and mode 2 which defines the width of the upstream data rate. In either
mode the Annex L upstream data rate is narrower than the Annex A data rate. The
Annex L downstream data rate is also about half as wide as the Annex A
downstream data rate.

The ADSL2 modems support the following features:
Enhanced Line diagnostics
Trellis coding
Seamless Rate Adaptation (SRA)
Improved transmit power cutback
Tone disabling for PSD control
Power management
Reduced overhead framing
Online reconfiguration (bit swapping)
One bit constellation

ADSL2+
The IU_ADSL72 type for Annex A and the IU_ADSL72 type for Annex B support
ADSL2+ under ITU-T G.992.5 (Annex A respectively Annex B). This enables ADSL
ports to reach, in downstream direction, a data rate between 32 kbps and a maximum
of 25,000 kbps. The data rate in upstream direction will be between 32 kbps and
1024 kbps.

ADSL2 and ADSL2+ in the hiX56xx implementation has the following
limitations
No support of packet mode
No support of STM mode
Only single latency path is supported (to be configurable per port if fixed or
interleaved mode).
No dynamic rate repartitioning Dynamic rate repartitioning require dual latency to
function.

2.3.2.4 VoIP Service Module
Although the voice gateway is not covered inside this course, here is a small
overview about this interface unit that can also be used with all shelf based hiX56xx
systems.

The POTS service module will play its role whenever there is a subscriber who has
PSTN services. The TDM voice traffic arriving at the DSLAM from the client can
either be offloaded to a local TDM exchange or be carried over the uplink interface of
the hiX56xx IP DSLAM. This last option requires the TDM voice to be packetized
and converted to VoIP. It's at this point that the VPLU72 interface board becomes an
essential part of the solution, as it's the responsible for the TDM to VoIP translation,
offering a total of 72 POTS interfaces, towards the clients, and 1 voice GW towards
the network.
The interface units VPLU72 are connected directly to the MDF for VoIP solutions.
The VPLU72 is available for Annex A (POTS). For VPLU72 variants Annex A, the
ports on the VPLU72 can be configured for support of H.248/MEGACO functionality.
The support of SIP is also available from R2.7 onwards. Support of ISDN interfaces
will be available at a later time.

The VPLU72 plug-in unit supports the following standards:
IETF RFC 3525
IETF RFC 3261
IETF RFC 1889
G.711
G.729a

The next images show the layout and main characteristics of the VPLU72 POTS
board:

2.3.3 Splitter Units
The SURPASS hiX5635/30/25 IP DSLAM uses splitter subracks for the combination
and separation of POTS and DSL signals. This is achieved by low-pass and high-
pass filtering. The splitters are purely passive modules which do not require power
supply. Thus, availability of the narrowband services is not affected by any
disturbances in the broadband system.

There are available different splitter modules for POTS and ISDN services, since the
cutting frequencies to separate Voice and Data will be different. ISDN reserves more
bandwidth for the narrowband service than POTS.

There is also available a so called Dummy splitter that is intended to maintain the
cabling scheme even when SHDSL boards are used, since this service does not
require the use of a splitter unit.

A splitters unit offers 36 interfaces that will be fed by 36 pairs of copper. After the
splitter, voice and data will be separated and handed over to the service cards on the
DSLAM (xDSL card receives the Data traffic and the Voice Gateway receives the
Voice traffic). The DSLAM will then forward the traffic thru out the aggregation
network. This applies in case the VoIP scenario is being implemented. If that's not the
case, then the narrowband signal coming out from the splitter will be given to the
traditional circuit switching equipment so that it can be properly handled.

The maximum capacity of one splitter board can be up to 36 ports (2 are necessary
to connect to a 72 port ADSL card); the splitter cards are released according to the
DSL line cards - e.g. for ADSL 48 port card there is a 24 port splitter card available.
It means that is necessary 2 Splitter Units per each Service Card on the DSLAM.

2.4 CXU Redundancy Schemes
Redundancy is an important feature, as a standby unit can be installed inside the
system and take control over the active unit in case a severe failure happens.
The hiX5600 family supports Controller, FAN and Power Unit redundancy.

For an increased reliability of the hiX5635/30/25, board redundancy for the CXU is
supported. Any of the available shelf type (M1200/M1100/G1100/M600/M400/G400)
can be optionally equipped with a set of two CXU, (CXU_B for M1200,
CXU_B1/CXU_B2 for M1100/G1100, CXU_C/CXU_C2 for M600, M400 and
G400/G400R). One of them will be acting as the active CXU while the second CXU
remains in the standby mode until a failure condition on the active CXU triggers a
redundancy switching event.

The board redundancy meets the following requirements:

Redundancy switching is initiated autonomously by CXU HW in case of a watch-
dog event (SW error on the currently active CXU)
Redundancy switching is initiated autonomously if the currently active CXU is
plugged-out
Redundancy switching can be initiated by a SW command on the currently active
CXU. This can occur:
as a result of HW state monitoring or
if a manual switchover is requested by the TMN.

As soon as one of the three trigger events listed above occurs, a switchover
procedure is carried out by a HW finite state machine (FSM), without SW interaction.
The previously Standby Switch Fabric Module takes over the active role
instantaneously. The previously working Switch Fabric Module passes a reset
process.
There is a preferred slot for the active CXU, depending on the hi56xx shelf used.
In case of the M1200/M1100/G1100 shelf Its slot 9, Slot 5 for the M600 and Slot 1 for
the M400.

2.4.1 Uplink Interface Redundancy
Redundancy of the uplinks can be obtained by using different protocols:
Spanning Tree protocol, SPT/RSTP/MSTP
Ethernet ring protocol, ERP
Link aggregation Group , LAG

Redundancy of the hiX5635/30/25 uplink can be provided by link aggregation of the
Ethernet interfaces. The uplink interfaces form a link aggregation group. In case of a
failure of a single link, the interface remains active, but the bandwidth is reduced by
the bandwidth of the lost link. An uplink protection switching (in a sense that a line
break does not reduce the transmission bandwidth) is not implemented.

The link aggregation based uplink protection mechanism works uniformly for shelf
equipping with a single CXU so as for shelf equipping with a redundant CXU pair.
Further Ethernet mechanisms, such as Ethernet ring protection (ERP) and Spanning
Tree Protocols (xSTP) can be applied for uplink protection.

Protection of CXU uplinks can be supported at the hiX56xx by using one of two
possibilities:

Protection with Interlink:
The Uplink interfaces are shared between both CXU by use of Interlink cables
between Active and Standby. The currently active CXU provides Ethernet frame
switching, whereas the switch on the currently standby CXU is not in use. Therefore
the uplink payload of the currently standby CXU has to be transmitted over the
interlink interface to the L2 switch on the currently active CXU.
Both CXUs are connected via interlink on front plate. The connection between the
ports is made by connecting ports and 4 of the Active CX with ports 1 and 2 of the
Protection CXU. The result is that the ports 1 and 2 of the Active CXU and ports 3
and 4 of the Standby CXU will become the working uplink interfaces.
This is shown on the next image.

Protection with Optical Combiner:
The uplink interfaces of both CXUs are connected with optical combiners.
The signal is laid out of the corresponding uplink of the active and the passive link of
the standby card at the same time.

2.5 Additional Interfaces
TMN Interface (outband)
For outband management purposes (inband via uplink interface), each CXU is
equipped with a 10/100 Base T (electrical, RJ45) interface. It can be used to connect
the TMN system or the LCT towards the CXU. If allows access for all management
functions which are offered on the uplinks (inband) as well.
The RJ45 interface is located at the face plate of the CXU; in case of redundant CXU
boards the interface of the online CXU has to be used. Therefore, for TMN
applications both interfaces (online and standby CXU) are connected to the TMN
network by a hub or switch.
For on-site maintenance tasks, the LCT can be directly connected to the CXU.

Special Interfaces
The following interfaces are supported by the system which can be seen on customer
specific requirements.
External Reference Clock T3
External Alarm Input Interface
There are 8 alarm input interfaces on the Common Interface Unit (CIU) at the
backplane side. Two RJ45 connectors provide 4 inputs each. The utilization of
alarm interfaces is dependent on application and is customer specific.
External Alarm Output Interface
The utilization of these alarm interfaces is dependent on application and is
customer specific.

Redundant Power Supply
A special slot is reserved for the redundant power modules which are connected by
separate power cables to the external power source. These modules provide the
powering to all boards of the shelf; the power distribution is done via the redundant
backplane. The accepted voltage range to be provided to the boards is -40,5 ... -75
VDC. Each board itself is equipped with own power modules which converts the
voltage towards the board internal lower voltage levels. EMC filters and over-voltage
protection is provided on the backplane.

FAN Units and Temperature Control
The hiX56xx shelf has attached one fan shelf (block) where the fans are mounted.
The fan block consists of a set of 6 fan units running in parallel. The fans are divided
into two fan groups.
The fan power supply is provided by the CXU, which contains two independent
DC/DC converters, each one for feeding of one fan unit group. The DC/DC converter
operation is supervised.
In case of two CXU (redundant), the fan power supply is provided by the currently
active CXU. A failure of one DC/DC converter on the active CXU will initiate a board
switch-over. An alarm is generated afterwards. The system is running in normal
operation state without service interruption.
In case of a single CXU (non-redundant), a failure of one DC/DC converter would
cause a shutdown of half of the fan units. An alarm is generated afterwards. Further
actions can be taken for clearing the failure conditions by the service staff.
