This document provides instructions for a homework assignment to build a transient groundwater flow model using MODFLOW. Students are asked to model dewatering of a linear construction site over 10 weeks using 12 wells (6 on each side) with a production schedule where 2 wells are added and 2 are removed each week. The aquifer properties and well pumping rates can be chosen from 15 variable options. Students are asked to produce contour maps of hydraulic head each week, and pathline images showing groundwater flow to the wells over 1, 3, and 6 weeks. An animation of the stress field over time should also be created.

Objective Building a transient GW flow model using Processing Modflow v5.3.3
Task description A building of a linear subsurface structure needs a continuous dewatering activity along a 100 m section of the site. In all circumstances to secure the construction activities 6 wells in 20 m distance must operate on both sides of the linear structure in 30 m distance, therefore there are always 12 wells operating (6 wells on both sides). Since in each week the construction of 20 m is to be finished, there is always 2 wells installed on the front side and 2 wells abandoned on the rear side each week. The transient flow field during the total construction period of 10 weeks is to be simulated.
There is a near surface shallow aquifer of M thickness, K permeability and N0 porosity at the site. The specific storage of the aquifer is 0.0001, the specific yield is 2% less then the effective porosity. The groundwater level is in approx. 3 m depth from the surface. The groundwater flow is from North to South direction, the representative hydraulic gradient is 2 m/km. Constructed structure orientation is EW, and it is started from the East side of the area.
The production rate of the wells on the ends are Q, and the mid-field wells produce 20% less.
Subtasks: 1. Building of the model dataset, all the not defined parameters can be freely chosen by the students 2. Runing the model and calculate the results 3. Determination of the Hydraulic Head distribution at the end of each week, drawing a contour map of it (Please save the map into a raster graphic image (BMP, JPG, etc.)) 4. Determination of pathlines to the wells for 1, 3 and 6 weeks transit time using data of any time step considering steady flow field. (Please save the pathlines into a raster graphic images (BMP, JPG, etc.)) 5. An animation of the evolution of the stress field into a separate directory called animation.
Variational table Each student must choose one dataset from the 15 choices
