anced online testing program.
All of this is in addition to
their Advanced Placement
exams. The resilience of the
Class of 2015, at this time of
year, is tremendous.
I wish you all a wonderful
finale to another whirlwind
school year. I cannot believe
we are approaching the end of
this academic year yet all of
the fun and most profound
memories are just about to be
made. I look forward to see-
ing all of you at
the final sports
competitions, con-
certs, awards
nights, and of
course, gradua-
tion.
Cheers,
Dear Cougar Parents,
Guardians, and Community
Members:

I cannot believe that I am
writing my final newsletter
article for the 2013-2014 aca-
demic year and as Principal of
HMBHS! This means that our
seniors will soon be cele-
brated at department and local
scholarship awards nights
followed by commencing
their high school years with
prom, senior picnic, and
graduation (see Important
Dates section for more infor-
mation and specifics).
Most of our seniors have
made decisions about next
year and now anxiously await
to learn about their roommate
and freshman dormitory or
apartment housing selections.
Check out the Cougar Coun-
seling Corner on page 4 to see
where our Class of 2014 has
been accepted. Other mem-
bers of the senior class are
gearing up for placement ex-
ams at local junior colleges,
for gap year options, or ap-
prenticeship opportunities.
But before they leave us, one
more round of Advanced
Placement Exams will occur
for students in grades 10-12.
We have an all time high
number of students testing
which is reflective of a sup-
portive teaching faculty and
counseling department.
These exams not only simu-
late college testing experi-
ences but also provide stu-
dents with the opportunity to
place out of entry level col-
lege and university courses
and to get ahead on credits
potentially leading to early
graduation from college.
Good luck to all of our Cou-
gar Scholars on the upcoming
exams!

Check out Mr. Dooleys Cur-
riculum and Instruction article
on page 3 for information
pertaining to technology up-
dates and the pilot of the
Smarter Balanced assess-
ments. Our juniors not only
took the Early Assessment
Program test, formerly the
STAR/CSTs, in English and
math, to assist with state col-
lege entrance and readiness
requirements, they also
helped test the Smarter Bal-

Honor Roll cont
Common Core Update: Smarter Bal-
anced Assessments

Congratulations to the rockstar J unior
class! They completed the new computer-
based Smarter Balanced assessments prior
to Spring Break. Testing went flawlessly
and all students completed the exams with
focus and intent, knowing they were sim-
ply "testing the test." The Junior class de-
serves a huge shoutout for accomplishing
this feat!

CST/STAR Update:
Continuing the testing theme for Juniors,
they successfully completed another CST/
STAR assessment for purposes of the
"Early Assessment Program (EAP)." For
more info on the EAP, go to http://
www.calstate.edu/eap/. They continued to
prove their testing acumen and again rose
to the challenge. In addition, all Sopho-
mores completed the Life Science exam
during the same testing window. CAPA
and CMA exams were also successfully
administered.
Advanced Placement (AP) Exams
All students enrolled in Advanced Place-
ment (AP) courses began completing
their exams starting May 5th. This is the
first year that HMBHS has completed
AP exams in the gym, another great suc-
cess thanks to Ms. Robertson and the
Counseling Department!

Final CAHSEE of the Year:
May 13th (English) and 14th (Math) are
the final opportunities this year for Sen-
iors to take the California High School
Exit Exam. In addition, all 11th graders
who have yet to pass and 10th graders
who were absent for the February census
administration will be tested. Passing
both the English and math portions of
the exam is mandatory for receiving a
high school diploma in the state of Cali-
fornia. Please see your school guidance
counselor or Mr. Dooley for more infor-
mation.

Spring Semester Final Exams:
Spring Semester finals are scheduled for
J une 10-12th. All final exams are to be
taken during that time. Per policy created
by the Academic Council, no students will
be allowed to test outside of the final exam
dates unless the absence is excused. Please
plan accordingly.

Technology Update:
As the first year under the Measure S
Technology initiative comes to a close,
students and staff have attained a tremen-
dous level of technology integration. Our
first-year, Cohort 1 teachers (8), have suc-
ceeded in this implementation and are fi-
nalizing plans to train the next set of teach-
ers in Cohort 2. This next group includes
English and Math teachers, with an alter-
nate platform of Chromebooks. Stay tuned
for more information about how this tech-
nology will positive influence your stu-
dents' learning. An important note of men-
tion is with the coming of the 2014-15
school year, 19 of our 42 classrooms have
full sets of tablets or Chromebooks! A
huge thank you to the District Tech. team
for facilitating this.

Counseling Department Updates:
After six wonderful years at Half Moon Bay High
School, Ms. Gangsei (A-G), will be saying good bye
to her Cougar family. She will be getting married this
summer and moving to Golden, Colorado. Ms.
Robertson (H-O) is pregnant with her second child
and will be taking another leave of absence to care for
the newest addition to her family. Ms. Buritica (P-
Z) will remain at HMBHS and will be taking over as
head counselor and leading the department. Ms.
Gangsei & Ms. Robertson are excited about our life
changes, but will miss HMBHS and especially our
wonderful students. And were excited to announce
that Ms. Olmstead will return to the high school after
an incredible year at Cunha.

ily during graduation practice in J une. If you need ad-
ditional tickets, please purchase them for $15 a piece
through the aforementioned website or on site at the

Francisco for their venue. Tickets are on sale now.

st
from 6-10PM.
The students are looking forward to an enjoyable and
memorable Prom experience to close out the school
year.

Athletics
The spring sports teams are in the midst of their
league seasons. Varsity Boys Baseball is battling for a
CCS spot as they finish up league and head into the
PAL tournament next week. Varsity Girls Softball con-
tinues to compete game in and game out as they look
for a deep playoff run again in CCS this year. Track
and Swimming both have the PAL championship to
look forward to this weekend with CCS to follow for
those who qualify. Good luck to Boys tennis Drew
Davison in CCS.

Please support your favorite teams and athletes on
campus by attending HMBHS home and away games.
If you would like to further support our athletes and
teams, please contact the Athletics Boosters for more
ways you can contribute to the cause.

Facilities
The Foundation and Athletics Boosters provided the
gymnasium with a face lift this spring with a stunning
new mural part of which reads Home of the Cougars.
Many students have commented that the gym looks
like a new building complimenting the paint job and
mural, which adorn the quad side of the gym. The
new mural can even be seen from the front of the
school and provides consistency with the existing
murals on the pool side and inside of the gym. The
next athletic facility to receive a major upgrade will
be the football field this summer as they replace the
turf and add track facilities.

Meanwhile, as we prepare for the 2014 Graduation,
we will host two more Campus Beautification Days
on May 17
th
and J une 7
th
. Please meet the Campus
Beautification committee at 8 AM on those dates in
front of the school to help transform campus for
Graduation. Students can earn service hours by par-
ticipating in the service project. We hope to see par-
ents and students working side by side on both Sat-
urday dates. Thank you to all who have worked so
tirelessly to constantly improve our facilities.

Cabrillo Education Foundation Welcomes New Executive Director
May 2, 2014
The Board of Directors of the Cabrillo Education Foundation (CEF) has selected Keith Cernakto serve as its new Executive Direc-
tor. Mr. Cernak is a passionate advocate of public education with an extensive background in community needs assessment and cre-
ating partnerships to address critical educational, social and health issues.

The CEF is a nonprofit organization that operates independent of the Cabrillo Unified School District in creating future opportuni-
ties for student success through education and innovation in our public schools.

"We chose Keith because he has the unique experience necessary to take CEF to a new level. He comes as a proven and national
award-winning leader in creating social and financial leverage through partnership development on behalf of community-based
enterprises, said Deb Hedger, CEF Board President, adding, He will provide leadership and management of our volunteer board
that maximizes our strategic goal-oriented growth and sustainability of CEF. I am thrilled to be working with him."
The Board President added, Cernak succeeds our outgoing interim executive director Mary Vradelis, an expert in non-profit organ-
izational transition who led CEF and prepared it for new leadership over the last ten months. We are so grateful for Marys leader-
ship. She transformed CEF in vital ways that prepared it for this next phase. She was also a pleasure to work with.

Mr. Cernak created the nationally awarded and internationally recognized Partners For A Healthier Community effort. For a dozen
years Mr. Cernak managed the Partners effort that developed joint ventures between more than fifty schools, community service
providers, businesses and health organizations to address populations in need. He has received numerous national awards for his
efforts and has been an Advisor on partnership development to the World Health Organization. Keith has an MBA from UCLA
where he was selected as one of UCLAs Inspirational 100 Alumni from over 37,000 MBAs for visionary and highly collabora-
tive leadership abilities.

I believe it is the right of all our children and youth to have access to the best educational opportunities we can provide for build-
ing their successful futures, said Mr. Cernak. As the new Executive Director of the Cabrillo Education Foundation, I look forward
to collaborating in our Coastside community with the schools, community, businesses and other organizations in this effort.

French Students Stay with HMB Host Families by Patty Clavijo

Half Moon Bay High Schools French 1 and 2 students hosted international students this year
when they participated in a pen-pal exchange
with middle school French students learning
English.

This is the French program's 10th anniver-
sary of being a host school with FACES
(Friends of America Cultural Exchanges).
Thank you to freshman Elise Quick and jun-
ior Ian Barton and their families for hosting
our new French friends. Our students
learned the importance of being good am-
bassadors as well as experienced real oppor-
tunities to practice their French.

We look forward to participating in the FACES cultural exchange again
next year so if you were not able to host this year, therell be another opportunity next year. You do not need to know French
to host and you dont need to be in a French class.
French students Elise Quick, Daisey Loreto, Molly
Jenkins and Emma Bradshaw surround their new
French "amie" or friend, Elise Wehr.
Ian Barton and Etienne!
