Dear Dr. Nauen:

Recently I learned that UD Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a candidate for an
assistant professor (CNTT) to teach biology within UD College of Arts and Sciences. I see this as an
excellent opportunity to advance in my teaching career and fully devote myself to this noble cause. I am
writing to formally apply for this position. I know first hand that University of Delaware is committed to
excellence in teaching biological sciences to help students in their future careers and lives.
I am currently working as a research specialist in the Department of Biological Sciences
of University of Delaware. In addition to research I’m teaching biological sciences to students at Cecil
College in Maryland. Specifically, I prepared and currently teach the 200 level course (BIO208) on
human anatomy and physiology. In the course, which is designed for students majoring mainly in nursing,
medical technologies, and exercise physiology, I use various teaching methods including lectures, quizzes
and students advising. I also use electronic resources such as Internet (to communicate with students: e:
mail, “Blackboard” electronic records keeping system) and Power Point to deliver lectures.
In previous years (2007 and 2008) I prepared and taught BISC276 course on Human Physiology
here at UD as an adjunct professor. I also taught as an invited lecturer segments of Advanced Mammalian
Physiology (BISC605 – Dr. R.Duncan) and Cardiovascular Physiology (BISC675 – Dr.U.Naik). This was
truly a rewarding experience for me to pass the knowledge and help students in their future careers and
lives.
As a science teacher and researcher, I believe in two fundamental philosophies that, in my
opinion, are very important in learning.
The first is that science must be a major part of education today so that students will be able to
function in the world tomorrow. With my background in physiology, biochemistry and cell biology I’m
prepared to teach BIO207 and BIO208 courses in general biology. In addition to lecture courses I’m
ready to conduct lab course to give students practical knowledge of the subjects they study and also to
encourage interested and motivated students to conduct research projects.
The second is that an educator should engage students in the process of active learning to share
with them his/her passion and love of learning and to persuade them in the importance of biology to better
understand ourselves and nature around us. I firmly believe that as a result of our work and efforts
students should obtain a solid knowledge of biological sciences which they can apply in their future
careers. These two philosophies coupled with my enthusiasm, love for learning, and readiness for
challenge and hard work make me a motivated and competitive candidate for the open position. Review
of the accompanying resume will show that my background provides the skills that you require for this
position and that my experience would be an excellent addition to your biology teaching program. I look
forward to the opportunity to discuss in greater details how my experience would add to teaching biology
