Christian life is no guarantee that everything will be sweet and smooth. Jesus himself warned all those who would be followers to take up their crosses and follow Him. In the gospel today, Jesus tells his disci- ples, Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God. Have faith also in me. If we handle life alone, it is too heavy to bear. But with Jesus, we are assured of divine help. Many biblical and practical sayings encourage us not to worry but have faith in God:
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Who of you by worrying can add a sin- gle hour to his life? For your heavenly Father knows that you need these things.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:25,32-33)
In another part of the gospel, Jesus said, Come to me all who labor and are heavily burdened and I will re- fresh you(Matthew 11:28). Both the apostles Peter and Paul put their trust in the love of God through Christ as the foundation of their life and existence. Paul wrote, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me(Phil 4:13). Peter reminds us, Cast all your cares upon the Lord for He cares for you(1 Peter 5:7).
During World War II, a brave woman who hid the Jews from the Nazis was later caught and sent to the concentration camp. Her courage comes from her faith in God. She said, If you look at the world you will be distressed. If you look within, you will be de- pressed. But if you look at Christ, you will be at rest. SECOND WINDOWSt. Paul must be given second place in this goodly company for Christ Himself said of him, This man is a chosen vessel to me to carry my name among the nations (Acts 9:15). In 35AD , the tent maker from Tarsus embarked on his labors which led him through Asia Minor and Greece to Rome where he suffered death by the sword. The book in his hand reminds us of the thirteen great epistles that came from his pen. (Italicized words refer to the sym- bols seen in the window.)
