Code It @ the Library

This Spring 2014, I have started a Code It @ the Library program series, with programs being
held monthly at the Eldersburg branch of the Carroll County Public Library. The program
explores Scratch, a popular educational programming language designed by the Lifelong
Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. By simply dragging together colored blocks of code,
children and teens can learn computer programming concepts while creating cool games and
animations.
Scratch is designed for ages 8-16 and is available for free at www.scratch.mit.edu. Scratch
helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively,
which are essential skills for life in the 21st century. A basic understanding of computer
programming is an important part of literacy in todays society.
Computer science is driving job growth and innovation throughout our economy. More than
half of projected jobs in STEM fields are in computing occupations. Despite this, computer
science education is often lacking throughout our K-12 education system. The mission of the
Carroll County Public Library is leading the way to lifelong learning and enjoyment. The
library is a perfect venue to fill this gap in educating our community and supporting its
economic future.
I am fortunate that my library branch has a dedicated computer lab in which to hold such a
program. I have the support of our IT Department to assist with loading the free software. I am
using Super Scratch Programming Adventure as well as various on-line materials as guides for
simple games and participants can create games, animations, and stories on their own as well.
Participants are informed to bring a USB flash drive if they wish to save their finished project to
take home.
If the program proves to be successful, demonstrated by attendance and interest at events, it
could easily be shared with other branches within our library system as our computer lab is
mobile (laptops). The series could also be expanded in the future to include other
programming languages, such as Python, Ruby, and Arduino for teens and adults.
