TITLE: Math Jeopardy

AUTHOR: Stephanie Bennett, Big Lake Elementary;

Big Lake, Alaska

GRADE LEVEL: Appropriate for grades 4-12

OVERVIEW: When teaching subjects which require

practice to better comprehend concepts and principles,
I use this game which can be adapted to any subject to
keep students actively involved in the learning
process. I will be explaining the game using Math as
the subject taught/reinforced.

OBJECTIVE(s): Students will be able to:

1. Work independently as well as a team to solve math
problems presented on the game board.
2. Student will be able to stand in front of group to
solve the problem given by explaining steps
necessary to solve problem.
3. Students will gain a better understanding of the
concepts by seeing how others solve problems.
4. Students will be actively involved in learning.

RESOURCES/MATERIALS:
One game sheet for each student, chalkboard, chalk, and
pencils.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

1. Copying the format of the game sheet, draw a large
game sheet on the chalk board. Leave space on one
side of the game board to place the team group
numbers( A,B,C,...) of the number of groups that
will participate in the game. Leave a space large
enough for a person to perform the math problem so
that the entire group can see the work.
2. On your game sheet, there are six spaces(
categories) at the top of the sheet. Depending on
the skills that you wish to use, fill in the top
category spaces with pertinent categories. (ex.
adding 4 digit numbers, multiplication of 3 digit
numbers, and so on ). I usually use recent skills
and loop past skills which have been taught to
reinforce concepts.
3. Finish filling in your master game sheet so that
under the category headings you have varying
levels of difficulty of the skill.
For example, if your category heading for #1 is
"addition" next to the space marked "10" you would
place the easiest problem until you reach "50"
where that would be the most difficult level
problem in that category. Do the same for the
other categories on the board.

ACTIVITIES:
1. Divide students into teams of equal numbers and
try to vary the abilities of the students for the
first time. Assign a team name/number.
2. Distribute a game sheet to each student. Place
name on sheet to be collected later by teacher for
assessment.
3. Have students decide who will be the scorekeeper
for their group. The scorekeeper will go to the
board with he person whose turn it is for their
group. Their job is to be silent, but to write
the point amounts in the proper space and to write
the problem given in the correct category box on
the board.
4. One person from the first team goes to board and
selects a category and a point amount. At this
time, all students write the problem on their
sheets and solve. They will not know exactly
which problem they will get until then. They must
show all work and when asked what the answer is by
the teacher, if the answer is correct, then they
must explain how they accomplished the correct
answer. Their scorekeeper places the points
gained under the proper team number and writes the
correct problem on the large game board and places
an 'x' through the problem.
5. The game continues in this way until every person
on the team has a turn. Then tally points to
determine the winner. for variety, you can
secretly place double Jeopardy points in selected
boxes, but don't let them know until they ask for
that specific box during their turn.
