Match Report;
Canberra Kookaburra's far too good for disappointing Perth Cougars --------------------------------------------------------------- Perth,WA- The Canberra Kookaburra's again sounded a warning to other teams that it is very much in the race for this years final series after a commanding 34-10 victory over the Perth Cougars. In a game described before kick off as a 'must win'. the result must be particularly disappointing for the Cougars who were beaten across the board.
Perth started well enough but Defensive End Seb Hogan disrupted the opening drive with a big sack. Then on 4th down he busted up a sweep to the left and the Cougars turned the ball over at the Canberra 40. The Cougars moved down the field and put up 3 points on the board before Perth responded the same on the next possession.
Perth were trying to press the Canberra receivers but Peter harper showed he could get the ball down the field even under immense pressure. His long ball hit speedy Zac Ioesefo in stride and he raced away 79 yards for the score.
The big turning point of the game came in the middle of the 2nd quarter when Harper was picked off by Dylan McKendry but whilst he was able to return the ball to the 6 yard line, Canberra held fast and stopped Perth on 4th down at their own 2. They backed this up with a 20 play drive that went 78 yards and Monikura Joe kicked a 30 yard field goal.
It got even worse for the home team with David Kelly on the end of a 9 yard pass from Harper before halftime to extend the lead to 20-3.
"We were not in the game. I wanted them to come out and give me some aggression and instead we just gave up even more" said Coach Doyle who saw Blidi Wreh-Wilson produce another stunning kick off return 71 yards. 2 plays later and Sam Romelo made a great catch in the end zone for another 7 pointer.
Perth did get a touchdown when Tight End Mike Morris caught a 7 yard pass from Lance Drayton at the end of the third but the game was already done and Iosefo added another touchdown in the 4th.
