Synchronized Swimming Research Assignment
There is actually a lot of history behind synchronized swimming. It was
invented by Benjamin Franklin, who was very fond of swimming and doing new
things in the water. In 1724 he started doing certain movements in the water for
the entertainment of his observers. Even though he doesnt get full credit to how
the sport is today, he was still put into the International Swimming Hall of Fame
for his contributions to the sport. Since the sport started out with just swift
movements in the water, and very graceful it was first called water ballet. The
first water ballet completion was held in Berlin 1891. There wasnt much buzz
about it at the time, due to how new it was and the world still had to realize its
potential.
One of the first people to be credited to making the sports popularity rise
is Annette Killerman. She was an Australian born long distance swimmer,
ballerina, and diver. She first stunned the world when she swam almost thirty
miles down the Thames River and then in 1907 she created a landmark event for
synchronized swimming by performing in a revealing one piece in the underwater
glass tank in New York. This historic moment caused commotion about this brand
new sport.
Over the years after this event the sports popularity and countries from all
over the world started participating in it and enhancing the sport as they moved
forward. One of the most famous breakthroughs was in 1934 when the Curtis
Modern Mermaids swam in the lagoon at the Century of Progress Worlds Fair in
Chicago. The announcer at the event called it synchronized swimming due to the
tricks they did in the water. These girls officially made the sport popular and for it
to be practiced throughout the world. In the 1940s the U.S started to get more
involved, and wanted to go far in the sport. Creating their first National
Championships and creating more sections like the solo events in the sport. Due
to all the fuss over synchronized swimming and how much work was put in to the
sport the International Olympic Committee accepted the duet event for the 1984
Olympics. Leading for them to also accept the solo events just months later.
Today synchronized swimming is still considered one of the newest sports.
It changes throughout the time and gets better at each international and national
competion. One of the newest additions to the sport are: the combination
routines and the synchro highlight routine. They are more artistic events that the
better the choreography and creativity is the higher reward is given .The synchro
highlight routine is quicker a routine where a group of swimmers perform two
different types of lifts, a connected float pattern, and a cadence action. Neither
events are considered Olympic events yet, but considering the amount of
progress the sport has had since the beginning it wont be long till these events
will be added by the committee.
The elements that are required in every competitive synchronized
swimming routine are different considering which event it is. All events have
specific requirements and an order in which to do the elements. Some are more
artistic than others or more physically demanding.
