When a person watches the Olympics, or takes part in a
Democratic vote, they probably wonder who created the Olympics, or who invented Democracy, what they dont know is that the Greeks invented both of these things. Greek culture is an extremely interesting culture that has had lasting effects on Modern Government, Technology, and Sports. To start, Today, when we do something as simple as vote, we are taking part in one of history's great experiments in government-democracy. (Brown). As a result, people are able to take part in Democracy everyday by voting for something thanks to the Athenians. Athens start of Democracy was much like the U.S.As start. Made wealthy through trade and powerful by its navy, Athens had become one of the leading city-states. Now Athenians began to want more: laws to make them secure and a direct role in the governing of their city . . . Greece had its own democratic Founding Fathers (Brown). Similarly, Athenss citizens wanted a stable government and stable laws like the colonial U.S citizens. Athens even had its own Founding Fathers like the U.S.A. Furthermore, Greece even had its own athletic competitions and sports. Of all the athletic contests held in ancient Greece, none rivaled the Olympics. The Games, which honored Zeus, the king of all gods, served many purposes: religious, political, and athletic. The ancient Greeks even measured time in Olympiads, the four-year intervals between Games. (McCabe). To clarify, the ancient Olympic Games honored Zeus and served many purposes: religious, political, and athletic. The modern Olympics dont honor Zeus, but they still serve those three purposes. Todays Olympic Games are very important to the entire world, Held every four years in different countries, the Olympic Games were originally an athletics and sports festival of ancient Greece. It is believed that the Games were originally played about 3,500 years ago. (Olympic Games). Todays Olympic Games are held every four years in a different country, but the first ones were held in Greece about 3,500 years ago. Also, the ancient Greeks had many ingenious inventions. Early steels were discovered by the Greeks when they added small amounts of carbon to iron as it was hammered over a charcoal fire (Technology). Accordingly, the Greeks invented early steels, which are crucial in modern day building projects. But the Greeks also had a flare for the dramatic, Who invented theater? Tradition - supported by considerable archaeological evidence- has always awarded that honor to the ancient Greeks. (The Birth of Theater). The Greeks invented theater according to archaeological evidence, and modern theater is very popular from Broadway to the big screen. Obviously, the Greek culture has made contributions to modern government by creating Democracy, sports by creating the Olympic Games, and has made technological contributions by discovering steel and inventing theater.
