1 A triple-package consisting of a Digital Video Disc player (DVD), a Home Theatre System
(HTS) and a High Definition Television set (HDTV) cost a total of $2244. Two companies
offer the following discounts if a customer buys the triple-package:

Company
Discounts given for each item in the package
Total price
DVD HTS HDTV
A 10% 8% 5% $2089.55
B 15% 12% 10% $1984.85

During the Great Singapore Sale, DUM Bank credit card holders are entitled to a 30%,
20% and 15% discount for the DVD, the HTS and the HDTV respectively for the triple-
package. How much would an DUM Bank credit card holder have to pay in total for the
triple-package? [4]

3 An arithmetic progression F has first term a and a non-zero common difference d. Given
that the sum of the first 60 terms of F is 5430 and that the first, third and eleventh terms of
F are three consecutive terms of a geometric progression, find the values of a and d.
[5]

A new series H is formed by extracting the odd-numbered terms of F. Find the least value of
n such that the sum of the first n terms of H exceeds 3500. [4]

4 The points A and B have position vectors 3 2 + i j k and 3 + i k respectively.

(i) Find a vector equation of the line l passing through the midpoint M of AB
and the origin O. [2]

(ii) Find the acute angle between the lines AB and l. [3]

(iii) Find the position vector of N, the foot of perpendicular from A to l. [3]

8 Pioneer J unior College has a total of 1700 students, of which 935 are in J C1. In a survey
to find out the percentage of PJ C students who own an iPhone, 2 student councillors,
Andy and Clara, decide to sample 60 PJ C students in the following manner:

Andy will station himself in the canteen and interview 30 J C1 students while Clara will
station herself in the concourse and interview 30 J C2 students.

(i) State the sampling method used by Andy and Clara. [1]

(ii) State a significant disadvantage of the above method used. [1]

(iii) Describe an alternative sampling method which would be better in this case. [3]

9 A group of student councillors is to be selected to represent 3 committees in the Student
Council: Esprit, Publicity and Relations. The group is to be chosen from amongst 4
Esprit committee members, 3 Publicity committee members and 3 Relations committee
members. Find the number of ways in which a group of 5 can be chosen if it includes

(i) only student councillors from Publicity and Relations committee, [2]

(ii) only student councillors from Esprit and Publicity committee, [2]

(iii) at least 1 student councillor from each committee. [2]

10 In a certain country the probability that a letter is delivered within three days is
1

. If
someone posts four letters on the same day, determine the probability that at least two
arrive within three days. [2]

If 200 letters are posted, find using a suitable approximation, the probability that more
than 50 letters arrive within three days. [3]

Find the minimum number of letters that a person should post if the probability that at
least one letter arrives within three days of posting is greater than 0.95. [3]

11 A firm makes short and long bricks. The length of short bricks follows a normal
distribution with mean 25 cm and standard deviation 1.5 cm. The length of long bricks
follows a normal distribution with mean k cm and standard deviation 2 cm. The
distributions of short and long bricks may be assumed to be independent. The random
variable S is the combined length of a random sample of 9 short bricks and the random
variable L is the combined length of a random sample of 4 long bricks.

long brick is more than twice as long as a randomly chosen short brick. [3]

12 A tennis match, consisting of at most three sets, is played between two players A and B.
Each set is won by either A or B, and the match is won by the first player to win two sets.

In subsequent sets, the probability of player A winning given that he had won in the
previous set is

week. [2]

(ii) Calculate the probability that at most 4 statistics books will be loaned out in one
month (assume there are 4 weeks in one month). [2]

(iii) Determine the smallest integer n such that in 10 randomly chosen weeks, the
probability of more than n weeks with no statistics books loaned out is less than
0.005. [4]

(iv) Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that, in 60 randomly chosen
months, there will be at least eight months with at most 4 statistics books loaned
out. [3]
