Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) Comments on Senate Passage of Bonding and
General Fund Investment Appropriations

(St. Paul, Minn) This morning, on what many believe is to be the final day of the 2014 legislative
session, the Minnesota Senate passed the omnibus bonding project allocation (HF 2490) and general
fund appropriations for capital investment (HF 1068) with the support of Senator Carla Nelson (R-
Rochester). Upon passage, the bills proceed to the Governors office for his signature.

I am so pleased about the passage of the bonding and cash bills this morning. Both include several
projects important to the constituents of Senate District 26, and will benefit Minnesotans and visitors
from across the world alike, said Senator Carla Nelson, member of the Senate Committee on
Capital Investment. I was glad to cast a green vote to fund cultural projects like the Chatfield
Center for the Arts ($5.4 million) and community projects like the Minnesota Housing Finance
Agency ($80 million), Remembering With Dignity grave memorials ($195,000) , Safe Routes to
Schools ($1 million), and the Lake Zumbro reclamation ($500,000). Continuing the preservation of
our states heritage through funding of the Capitol restoration ($126.3 million) is vitally important,
as is renovating a critical institution of higher education in our community, Rochester Community
and Technical College ($1 million). In transportation infrastructure, local road improvements ($54.4
million) and local bridge replacement ($33 million) will receive both bonding and cash
appropriations. And finally, the time has come for the long sought-after Mayo Civic Center
expansion project ($35 million) in Rochester. Attracting prestigious national and international
medical conventions to our part of the state will be a boost to the local economy.

With so many projects on the table, this agreement comes down to priorities. There are certain
projects I would not have chosen, but overall I am happy with the focus on funding culture,
community, heritage, higher education, infrastructure and economic development. I believe weve
struck the all-important balance in these investments necessary to preserve our common heritage,
develop regional assets and encourage economic growth, added Senator Nelson.
