Aims - what did the organization, product, service, or the initiative or campaign set out to do?

The primary aim was to be one of the worlds most Comprehensive Centers for
Treatment of Liver Diseases & Transplantation encompassing the entire gamut of
Medical, Surgical, Adult and Pediatric liver disease cases which attracts liver patients
from the entire world due to its clinical excellence.
One more important goal was also to utilize and unlock the wealth of clinical
information gleaned by documenting it, making use of it in research and academic
settings and sharing it with others in this field both by publishing papers as well as
conducting workshops and providing training to doctors who come from countries
where this knowledge is much needed, in order to benefit the larger population.
Strategy - what strategic thinking came into play to help achieve the aims?
To help achieve the above aims, several critical elements had to be put in place. First
and most important, was to find the right leadership to provide expertise, guidance,
confidence and motivation to the unit.
Next, was to put the perfect team together which would collectively have the right mix
of specializations, expertise in a broad range of areas in the field of Heapato-Pancreatico
Biliary Diseases, unique strengths, and diverse backgrounds that would be able to work
together as a cohesive unit.
Then, providing them with the right infrastructure, technology and overall environment
to allow them to perform at their very best every single time was thought to be equally
crucial.
Lastly, incentivizing and promoting a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing
with professionals in this field across the globe. Many of them currently do not have the
specialized skills or necessary expertise to treat certain patients and thus refer patients
to us. Fostering close relationships with them by providing them advanced training,
helps in the continuity of care of the patients referred by them. Once overseas patients
go back to their country after treatment, their long term follow ups is a big challenge
and having links with local doctors in the country facilitates this process and immensely
benefits the patients. Also, in the long run, more and more patients can be treated in
their own countries by doctors trained under us, and can eventually hope to have a
successful transplantation programme in their country itself.
Implementation - how was the strategy and thinking implemented?
Right Leadership
One of the first steps towards our goal was getting Prof. Mohamed Rela on board, who
is presently Head-HPB & Liver transplant surgery at Global Hospitals Group. Insert
appropriate highlights about prof !

Right Team
Under the able leadership of Prof. Mohamed Rela, Global Hospitals Group today has one
of the largest teams of specialists, comprising of Hepatologists, Liver transplant
Surgeons, Anesthesia and Intensive care specialists for Adult Medical Liver ICU, Surgical
Liver ICU, Pediatric Liver ICU, Transplant Nephrologist, Infectious Disease Consultant,
Interventional Radiology and Gastroenterology and Specialty oriented Histopathology
supported by Transplant co-ordinators, Transplant Nutrition and Dietetics Unit, Liver
Nursing Team and an exceptional International Patient Services team who go an extra
mile in taking care of the patient and their attendants.

Best Technology
In terms of the technology available for the team, we are well equipped with state-of-
the-art technology for liver surgery using the laparoscopic Argon Beam Laser as well as
Tissue Link in combination with other methods of liver resection like CUSA and
Laparoscopic Vascular Stapling. Bloodless Liver Surgery is also performed with high
success rates.

Collaborative Approach
The multi-disciplinary team has a collaborative approach, working together in a highly
synchronized manner with systems, processes and protocols to deliver exceptional
patient care and achieve unparalleled clinical excellence to ensure that patients,
especially ones coming from foreign shores benefit the most.

Knowledge Sharing
We also reach out actively to partner professionals from across the globe who are in
early stages of setting up independent Transplant Programmes in their respective
countries. Many of them like Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc. today are at a stage which India was
in 5-7 years ago, in terms of the available experience and knowhow for setting up a
successful liver transplant programme. Thus, we understand their challenges thoroughly.
As a means of addressing their most critical challenge - non-availability of adequately
trained doctors, we provide short term practical training to develop the capabilities of
doctors.

Innovation/enterprise/creativity (marketing) - what intrepid solutions were employed?
India today is emerging as a preferred healthcare destination primarily for living donor
liver transplantation. We are unique in having imbibed and incorporated the best
practices of East (in Living Donor Liver Transplantation) and West (Cadaveric Liver
Transplantation) to achieve excellent clinical outcomes.

We have done pioneering work in several areas of Liver Transplantation. Some of the
most complicated surgeries which are performed on a regular basis and with a very high
success rate in our centre include
Combined Liver & Kidney Transplantation,
Split Liver Transplantation,
Auxiliary Partial Orthotopic Liver Transplantation,
Swap Liver Transplantation
Mesocaval Shunt
Hepatectomy
Whipples Surgery
Trans-Arterial Chemo-Embolization

A Few Case Studies
A 3 year old child became sick and got admitted to a hospital in the Middle East.
Diagnosed with Acute Liver Failure from Viral Hepatitis, she urgently needed a new liver,
warranting an emergency liver transplantation. She was immediately put on a ventilator
for a week and her parents were advised by the local doctors to immediately take her to
Global Hospitals Chennai, as one of the most renowned liver disease & transplantation
management centres in the world, for further management.
Professor Mohamed Rela, Head of the Liver Transplant program for Global Hospitals
Group, credited with the largest experience in Auxiliary Partial Orthotopic Liver
Transplantation and pediatric liver transplant and a Guinness World Record Holder for
performing a liver transplant on a 5 day old baby took the crucial decision to perform
APOLT on the child instead of a regular Living Donor Liver Transplant.
The child was successfully treated at the Pediatric Liver Intensive care unit, with all the
supportive care and under close surveillance to prevent further deterioration from
sepsis as patients with acute liver failure is more prone to infections.
Management of Liver disease in this child was especially challenging from various
perspectives and involved multidisciplinary approach with close co-ordination and team
work. Expertise from multiple specialties - Hepatology, Transplant Surgery, Liver
Anesthesia, Pediatric and Adult Intensive Care, Transplant Infectious Disease, Radio
Diagnosis, Interventional Radiology, Liver Pathology, Pediatric Intensive Care and
Nursing, Specialized Nutrition and Dietetics, and Transplant Co-ordination were all vital
to make this successful.
