Professor Kumkum Garg

Dr. Kumkum Garg obtained her B.E. (Honours) in Electronics and Communication Engineering
from the erstwhile University of Roorkee (UOR), now IIT Roorkee, in 1971. After a brief stint
with BEL, Bangalore she returned to UOR to complete her Masters in Computer Science and
Engineering in 1976, after which she joined the Dept. of E&CE in July 1976 as Lecturer. She took
her Doctorate degree in Distributed Computer Systems from Imperial College, London, UK in
1984 and returned to UOR to become Reader in 1985 and Professor of Computing in 1989.

She served as Head of the Information Superhighway Centre at IIT Roorkee in 2005-06. She was
also a member of the Institute Vision 2030 Committee. Her research interests are in Computer
Networks, Mobile Computing and Artificial Intelligence. She has guided more than 100 PG and
research students in these areas and has more than 100 research papers in national and
International Journals and Conferences.

Dr. Garg is a recipient of the Commonwealth Scholarship of the British Council, UK., in 1981-84.
She was also awarded the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) award in 2006, from Apple
Systems, USA, for commitment to the promise of educational technology in the classroom and
beyond. She has authored a book on Mobile Computing- Theory & Practice, published by
Pearson Ed. in April 2010. She was instrumental in getting CISCO, USA to donate state-of-the-art
networking equipment to set up an Advanced Networking Laboratory at IIT Roorkee, for the
benefit of students working in the area of Network security and Mobile Agents.

Dr. Garg is a Senior Member of IEEE, Fellow of Institution of Engineers (I) and Life Member of
various Professional Societies, including ISTE, SMATAC and ISCEE. She has over 40 years of
experience of teaching and research and has successfully undertaken a number of Sponsored
Research and Consultancy projects from AICTE, DRDO, MIT, GoI and Govt. of Uttarakhand. She
has been on the panel of experts for Computer Science and Engineering/IT education and state-
wide area networking for various Government and Private Organizations.

She is currently a member of the Core Committee of FICCI on National Knowledge Functional
Hub and Higher Education.
Since August 2010, Dr. Kumkum Garg has taken charge as Director, MIT, Manipal.
