Gang Violence
Cure Violence Organization
I. Intro
Gangs have been the earliest form of human organization. A group of people known by a
certain name and identified with hand signs or colors are considered gangs. In order to join one,
you have to pass through an initiation of either getting jumped in or committing an act of
violence. Here in the U.S alone there are about 33,000 gangs and 1.4 million gang members
criminally active (FBI-Gangs). In other countries, such as El Salvador theres an estimate of 25
to 50 thousand gang members, in Mexico about 100,000, in Asia more than 300 thousand gang
members (overview of Japanese Police, National Police Agency), and in Europe 25,000
members with 250,000 affiliates throughout the globe (Italian Organized Crime overview,
Fbi.gov).
In order to make a change throughout all communities, awareness and deep
understanding of the situation are key processes. Theres more to someone just deciding to join a
gang. Surroundings and childhood influence those decisions. To make the change I will be
working with the Cure Violence organization. Cure Violences members are former gang
members, drug dealers, and some have acted in violence before, but are now new people hoping
to spread knowledge. They advocate the community on how to solve conflicts peacefully, and

have been rated #9 on Global Journalists list of top non-profit organizations in 2013 (Stopping
the Spread of Violence, http://cureviolence.org/)
My Capstone project will address the four Asia Society Global Leadership Performance
outcomes categories: Investigating the World, Recognizing Perspectives, Communicating Ideas,
and Taking Actions. This Capstone project will prepare me to be a better speaker before an
audience and become a role model for others. It will prepare me academically by experiencing
me in writing essays, scheduling events, and researching multiple areas of my Capstone. This
project will make me college ready and cause an impact in the community before my graduation.

IV. Form

My Capstone project will take three forms. First will be a 6 to 8 college level research
paper with citations and an additional works cited page. Secondly, I will present my
information and knowledge to different elementary and middle schools. Third, I will
fundraise to help donate to the Cure violence organization.
