Experience 3: Supermarket shopping pretend play experience Objectives/Goals: For child J and other children to engage in co-operative play facilitated by a pretend play shopping experience. To further enhance social skills and verbal communication through oral language To develop imaginative play through acting out characters and scenarios To enhance problem solving and decision making skills To allow children to discover, explore their environment through connecting to their world. Links to framework: Learning outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity Leaning outcome 2: Children are connected and contribute to their world Learning outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing Learning outcome 5: Children are effective communicators Rational: Child J and several other children created a scenario of shop keeper with the use of the cash register and other equipment. Child J and several other children were highly involved in the shopping trolley card game. During both of these experiences, positive co-operative play was forming as well as dramatic role playing. To extend on their interests and development an opportunity to turn the card game and shop keeper experience into a dramatic role play could further enhance imaginative and co-operative play. Child Js mother has expressed her sons interests on the interests notice board and expressed concern of his oral language skills (see appendix C). Space: This experience will take: Inside On the main mat in the middle of the room This has an open space and allows for movement, noise, open ended experience and co-operative play. Time: This experience will take place: In the mornings for the whole week before morning tea time. Requires observations to be taken daily to allow for modifications for the following session. Any extensions can take place the following week after observations and an evaluation has taken place. Individual observations on child J. People: EC educator will invite child J and several other children to the experience. This experience is open-ended; every child is encouraged to participate. EC educator can use the following strategies: Positively encourage verbal communications through oral language skills. Encourage children to look at the visual items on their list and seek the items on the shelves. Encourage children to be cooperative through sharing roles and characters. Turn taking needs to be addressed. Encourage children through open-ended questions. What do you think we might need before we go to the supermarket? What do you think we need to collect from the supermarket today? What do we do before we leave the supermarket? Materials: A4 laminated shopping lists: picture and word of food /item. 6 small plastic trolleys Recycled food items: boxes of cereals, muesli bars, milk, egg cartons etc. Plastic materials: fruit and vegetables. Small table with cash register and money. Green bags/recycled bags for carrying home. Dress ups
