THE REALITY OF IMAN

APRIL 11 2014 / 11 JUMADA AL THANI 1435 HIJRI

BY SHAIKH ABDULLAH AL FAISAL
Iman is translated into English to mean faith.
Faith is how the scholars try to translate iman into English.

Iman is one of the topics the ummah of Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) needs to understand properly.
This is because there are a lot of differences of opinions about it.
All the deviant groups have gone astray in regards to the reality of iman.
They don't even know how to define iman properly.
Whenever a thing is not properly defined, you become a headless chicken in regards to that thing.
You do not understand the thing in life everything has to be properly defined.
There are fives definitions in regards to iman:
DEFINITION # 1
The first definition is of the Qarmatians.
They are the extreme Shiites.
They claim Iman is awareness.
Therefore, as long as you aware Allah (SWT) exists and that Muhammad was a prophet, you are a Muslim
perfect in iman.
This definition includes the pharaoh inside the fold of Islam.
[Musa (Moses)] said: "Verily, you know that these signs have been sent down by none but the Lord of
the heavens and the earth as clear (evidences i.e. proofs of Allah's Oneness and His Omnipotence, etc.).
And I think you are, indeed, O Fir'aun (Pharaoh) doomed to destruction (away from all good)!"

(Al-Isra 17:102)
The Pharaoh was aware that Musa (AS) brought the truth.
His awareness didn't make him a Muslim though.
The Qaraamita are in manifest error.

Their definition is wrong.

DEFINITION # 2
Iman is to believe in your heart.
Therefore, as long as you believe in your heart, you are a Muslim perfect in iman.
This is the definition of the murjia.
This definition is wrong because it includes Abu Talib inside the fold of Islam.
Abu Talib believed Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was a Prophet.
This is why he let Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) preach and backed him.
A Christian monk saw the sign of prophecy between Muhammad's (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) shoulders.
Abu Talib believed the monk.

He believed that Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the messenger of Allah (SWT) yet he still died a
kaafir.
Abu Talib sent the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) back to Makkah and didn't take him to Syria.
Abu Talib acted on the advice of the monk.
This definition of the murjia includes the army of the Pharaoh and the pharaoh inside the fold of Islam.

And they belied them (those Ayat) wrongfully and arrogantly, though their own selves were convinced
thereof [i.e. those (Ayat) are from Allah, and Musa (Moses) is the Messenger of Allah in truth, but they
disliked to obey Musa (Moses), and hated to believe in his Message of Monotheism]. So see what was

the end of the Mufsidun (disbelievers, disobedient to Allah, evil-doers, liars.).

(An-Naml 27:14)
The Pharaoh and his army believed in their hearts that Musa (AS) brought the haq.
They rejected faith outwardly in the name of pride and arrogance.
DEFINTION # 3
Iman is the mere declaration with the tongue.
This definition is dangerous, wrong and erroneous.

This dodgy definition of Iman includes the hypocrites inside the fold of Islam.
When the hypocrites come to you (O Muhammad SAW), they say: "We bear witness that you are indeed
the Messenger of Allah." Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger and Allah bears witness that
the hypocrites are liars indeed.
(Al-Munafiqun 63:1)

The above verse tells you that iman is more than the mere testification with the tongue.
This erroneous definition of iman has included the shaitan in the fold of Islam.
[Iblis (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected." (AlHijr 15:36)

The shaitan believes Allah (SWT) is his one and only lord.

He believes in Judgement Day and life after death.

In spite of all that, the shaitaan is still a kaafir because iman is more than the mere declaration with the tongue.

DEFINTION # 4

Iman is belief in the heart and declaration with the tongue.

This is the definition of Abu Hanifa (RA).

Because this definition lacks something, people spread rumours that Abu Hanifa (RA) was a murji.

Abu Hanifa (RA) was not a murji because he used to make takfeer.

A murji is a liberal who refuses to make takfeer even when the text is clear.

If you ask a murji if Salman Rushdie is a kaafir, he will say Allahu alam.
Even when the kufr of the person is clear he says Allahu alam, I leave it to Allah (SWT) and he refuses to take a
stance.

DEFINTION # 5

This is the definition of ahlu sunnah wal jamaah.

Iman is conviction of the heart, declaration with the tongue and implementation with the limbs

Therefore if one of these three dimensions of iman is missing, the person cannot be classed a true Muslim.

This definition of iman is the only correct definition.

As for definitions 1, 2 and 3, they are the definitions of the ghulaat murjia (extreme murji).

These definitions include the hypocrites, the Pharaoh and the shaitaan inside the fold of Islam.

ARE OUR ACTIONS ARE PART OF OUR IMAN?

According to the murjia, our actions are not a part of our iman.

Therefore nothing we do can eject us outside the fold of Islam.

The murjia say, "Islam is in my heart; I don't need to practice".
They call themselves non-practicing Muslims

Is there such a thing as a non-practising Muslim?

Someone who won't pray, fast or perform hajj

The evidence from ahlus sunnah wal jamaah to prove our actions is a part of iman is the following ayah:

And Allah would never make your faith (prayers) to be lost (i.e. your prayers offered towards Jerusalem).
Truly, Allah is full of kindness, the Most Merciful towards mankind.
(Al-Baqarah 2:143)

The sahabas used to pray facing Jerusalem.

Allah (SWT) then commanded them to face Makkah.

They asked the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) about their previous salah facing Jerusalem.

Allah (SWT) answered them in the above ayah.

Allah (SWT) pronounced their prayers to Jerusalem as Iman and your prayers is full of actions.
It is impossible for the zindeeqs to refute this ayah.
This is the evidence used by scholars like Ibn Katheer (RA), Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) and Ahmad ibn Hanbal (RA). to
prove that our actions are a part of our iman.

EVIDENCES FROM HADITH TO PROVE OUR ACTIONS ARE A PART OF IMAN

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be

upon him) said: Faith has over seventy branches or over sixty branches, the most excellent of which is
the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the humblest of which is the, removal of what is
injurious from the path: and modesty is the branch of faith.
{Sahih Muslim: Book 1 Chapter 13 Hadith: 56 & (Muslim: Book 1 Hadith 60) }
The above mentioned hadith states that to remove something harmful from the road is a branch of iman.
Therefore our actions are a part of iman.

Those who believe otherwise are misguided.

Hizbut Tahrir believes actions are not part of iman.

They are misguided.

Hizbut Tahrir has a severe tawheed problem.

Their tawheed problem is chronic.

Marriage is full of actions and marriage is half your deen.

Anas Ibn Malik narrated the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: When a person gets married he has
completed half of his religion, so let him fear Allah with regard to the other half.
[Al-Bayhaqi narrated in Shuab al-Eemaan (7/340) No. 5100]
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, "The most perfect of believers in belief is
the best of them in character. The best of you are those who are the best to their women."
[Musnad Ahmad (2/472) No. 10110, Sunan Tirmidhi (3/466) No. 1162, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/220) No. 4682]

As for the saying of the murji - I am a non-practising Muslim- Ahmad ibn Hambal (RA) used an ayah to flush their
idealogy down the drain.

But if they repent, perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in
religion. (In this way) We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in

detail for a people who know.

(At-Tawbah 9:11)
When the Prophet (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had POWs, the sahabas were worried they were taking fake
shahadas.

Allah (SWT) then revealed the above ayah.

Allah (SWT) said if they make tawba, perform salah and give zakah, then they are your brothers in deen.

Allah (SWT) laid down three actions for you accept them for you to accept them as your brothers in islam.
Therefore there is no such thing as a non-practising Muslim.
As for their saying - no action can eject me outside the fold of Islam - we have evidences from Qur'an and
Sunnah to prove otherwise.
The first evidence is Surah 2:102.
They followed what the Shayatin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman
(Solomon). Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved, teaching men magic and
such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels, Harut and Marut, but neither of these two
(angels) taught anyone (such things) till they had said, "We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by
learning this magic from us)." And from these (angels) people learn that by which they cause separation
between man and his wife, but they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's Leave.

(Al-Baqarah 2:102)

Allah (SWT) made takfeer on people who dabble in black magic in the above mentioned Ayah.
Allah (SWT) also made takfeer on people who ridicule the Prophet or an aspect of Islam in Surah 9:65-66.

If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah,
and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger (SAW) that
you were mocking?" Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some
of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists,
sinners, criminals, etc.).

(At-Tawbah 9:65-66)

So those who say our actions can't nullify our Islam are mistaken and misguided.

A man was killed as a kaafir because he married his father's wife.

Narrated By Al-Bara' ibn Azib: I met my uncle who was carrying a standard. I asked him: 'Where are you
going?' He said: 'The Apostle of Allah (SAW) has sent me to a man who has married his father's wife. He
has ordered me to cut off his head and take his property.'
[Sunan Abu Dawud (4/157) No. 4457, Sunan al-Nasa'i (6/109) No. 3332, Sunan al-Darime (2/205) No. 2239,
Musnad Ahmad (4/290) No. 18580]
He was killed as a kaafir because his property was confiscated.

If he were killed as a Muslim, his property would not have been confiscated.

Ibn Katheer (RA) said this when explaining the hadith.

Hafsa (RAA) killed a slave girl who worked black magic on her.
Hafsa (RAA) acted on Surah 2:102.

This is another evidence to show actions can take you out of Islam.

We the members of ahlus sunnah wal jamaah believe there are two types of kufr: major and minor.

When a person perpetrates minor kufr, he is still a Muslim.

But when a person perpetrates major kufr, he becomes a kaafir.

To insult Allah (SWT) and to practise black magic are examples of major kufr.

Hafsa ibn Umar Yahya related to me from Malik from Muhammad ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Sad ibn Zurara
that he had heard that Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, killed
one of her slave-girls who had used sorcery against her. She was a mudabbara. Hafsa gave the order,
and she was killed.
{Muwatta Malik: Book 43 Hadith: 1594}
Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab - Rahimahullah - gathered ten actions that negate one's Islam
(Nawaqid ul-Ashr), the eighth one of which states: "Assisting the disbelievers (against the believers)
(Mudhaharatul Mushrikeen) and supporting them against the believers is one of the actions that negates
of one's Islam..."
[Nawaqid-al-Islam]

Ibn Hazm Stated in Al-Muhalla (11/138):

"What is correct is that His statement, the Most High, "And if any amongst you takes them as Auliya',
then surely he is one of them." (The Quran 5:51), should be understood on the basis of its apparent
meaning. The person being referred to is a disbeliever from the generality of disbelievers, and no two
Muslims disagree regarding this."
The pagan Arabs used to eat animals that die by themselves.

They used to tell the Muslims to eat of that meat too.

Allah (SWT) said that if you follow them in eating dead carcasses you become a mushrik like them.

Eat not (O believers) of that (meat) on which Allah's Name has not been pronounced (at the time of the
slaughtering of the animal), for sure it is Fisq (a sin and disobedience of Allah). And certainly, the
Shayatin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind) to dispute with you, and if you obey them by
making AlMaytatah (a dead animal) legal by eating it], then you would indeed be Mushrikun (polytheists)
[because they (devils and their friends) made lawful to you to eat that
which Allah has made unlawful to eat and you obeyed them by considering it lawful to eat, and by doing
so you worshipped them, and to worship others besides Allah is polytheism].
(Al-An'am 6:121)

DOES OUR IMAN FLUCTUATE?

According to hizbut tahrir and the ghulaat murjia, our iman is static; it doesn't fluctuate

However we have evidences from Qur'an and Sunnah to prove otherwise.

The first evidence is Surah 3:173.

Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered
against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said:
"Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)."
(Aali Imran 3:173)

When the sahabas were getting ready to fight, the hypocrites said to fear the pagans.

Allah (SWT) said He caused the believers to grow in iman when they were marching to the battle of uhud in the
above mentioned ayah.
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His
Verses (this Qur'an) are recited unto them, they (i.e. the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their
trust in their Lord (Alone);
(Al-Anfal 8:2)

It is impossible for a deviant like hizbut tahrir who believes iman is static to refute the above mentioned ayah.

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Qur'an), some of them (hypocrites) say:
"Which of you has had his Faith increased by it?" As for those who believe, it has increased their Faith,
and they rejoice.
(At-Tawbah 9:124)

Surah 9:124 is the other ayah used by Ibn Katheer, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ahmad ibn Hanbal (RA) and Ibn Qayyim
(RA) to refute those who say iman is static.

All deviants have a severe tawheed problem.

Allah (SWT) told you in the Qur'an that people can increase in their kufr as well.

Not only do the believers increase in their iman, but also the kuffar can increase in their kufr.

Verily, those who disbelieved after their Belief and then went on increasing in their disbelief (i.e. disbelief
in the Qur'an and in Prophet Muhammad SAW) - never will their repentance be accepted [because they
repent only by their tongues and not from their hearts]. And they are those who are astray.
(Aali Imran 3:90)

EVIDENCES FROM SUNNAH THAT OUR IMAN INCREASES AND DECREASES

Hanzal met Abu Bakr (RA) in the street and said to stay away from him because he has become a munafiq.

Hanzala reported: We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (SAW) and he delivered to us a sermon
and made a mention of Hell-Fire. Then I came to my house and began to laugh with my children and
sport with my wife. (Hanzala) further reported: I went out and met Abu Bakr and made a mention of that
to him. Thereupon he said: I have done the same as you have mentioned. So we went to see Allah's
Messenger (SAW) and said to him: Allah's Messenger, Hanzala has become a hypocrite. And he (the Holy
Prophet) said Show respite. And then I narrated to him the story, and Abu Bakr said: I have done the
same as he has done. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Hanzala, there is a time for worldly affairs
and a time for (worship and devotion), and if your state of mind is always the same as it is at the time of
remembrance of Allah, the Angels would shake hands with you and would greet you on the path by
saying: As-Salamu-Alaikum.
[Sahih Muslim (4/2107) No. 2750]
This hadith is used as evidence that iman increases and decreases.

WHAT ARE THE 6 PILLARS OF IMAN?

1. TO BELIEVE IN ALLAH

2. TO BELIEVE IN HIS ANGELS

3. TO BELIEVE IN HIS BOOKS

4. TO BELIEVE IN HIS MESSENGERS

5. TO BELIEVE IN THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT

6. TO BELIEVE IN DESTINY (QADR)

HADITH JIBREEL:

Umar (RA) ibn al-Khattab (RA) said that they were with Allahs Messenger (SAW) when a man came
wearing extremely white clothing and deep black hair but signs of a journey could not be detected on
him nor could they recognise him as one of them. He came to the Prophet (SAW) and sat down beside
him, his knees touching the Prophets (SAW). He asked O Muhammad, what is faith? He said, It is to
believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers (peace be upon them all), in the Last Day and in
Predestination of good and evil. He asked, And what is Islam? He said, It is. to testify that there is no
God but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger (SAW) to establish the Salah, to pay
the Zakah, to perform pilgrimage of the House and to fast in Ramadan. He asked, And what is Ihsan?
He said, It is that you worship Allah as though you see Him, for it you cannot see Him, He sees you. The
visitor remarked, In everything that you have spoken, you spoke truth. Umar (RA) said that they were
surprised at his questioning him and then confirming that he spoke the truth. Next, he asked, And when
is the Hour?

He said, The one who is questioned does not know more about it than the one who asks. He asked,
Then what are its Signs? He said, That a maid-servant will beget her mistress and that you see
barefooted, naked-bodied, helpless shepherds construct tall buildings. Umar (RA) said that the Prophet
(SAW) then met him after three days and said, Umar (RA) , do you know who the questioner was? He
was Jibril come to teach you the basics of your religion.
[Bukhari 47, Muslim 4, Tirmidhi 2619, Abu Dawud 4695, Nisai 5005, Ibn Majah 63, Ahmed 184]

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MUSLIM AND A MUMIN?

Even though we use the words Muslim and Mumin interchangeably, Allah {SWT} makes a difference between
them in the Qur'an.

Verily, the Muslims (those who submit to Allah in Islam) men and women, the believers men and women
(who believe in Islamic Monotheism), the men and the women who are obedient (to Allah), the men and
women who are truthful (in their speech and deeds), the men and the women who are patient (in
performing all the duties which Allah has ordered and in abstaining from all that Allah has forbidden),
the men and the women who are humble (before their Lord Allah), the men and the women who give
Sadaqat (i.e. Zakat, and alms, etc.), the men and the women who observe Saum (fast) (the obligatory
fasting during the month of Ramadan, and the optional Nawafil fasting), the men and the women who
guard their chastity (from illegal sexual acts) and the men and the women who remember Allah much
with their hearts and tongues (while sitting, standing, lying, etc. for more than 300 times extra over the
remembrance of Allah during the five compulsory congregational prayers) or praying extra additional
Nawafil prayers of night in the last part of night, etc.) Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a
great reward (i.e. Paradise).
(Al-Ahzab 33:35)
Allah (SWT) made a difference between muslimeen and mumineen in the above mentioned ayah.

The Bedouins say: "We believe." Say: "You believe not but you only say, 'We have surrendered (in
Islam),' for Faith has not yet entered your hearts. But if you obey Allah and His Messenger (SAW), He will
not decrease anything in reward for your deeds. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
(Al-Hujurat 49:14)

Some Arabs came out of the desert and asked Muhammad to feed them and they said that they are muminoon.

Allah (SWT) said to say that they are muslimoon not muminoon.

So Allah (SWT) made a difference between a Muslim and a Mumin in the above ayah.

A Muslim is a person who believes in Islam and is practising it but he might have a major weakness like alcohol
or a girlfriend.

while a mumin doesn't have a major weakness which is a trait in his character.

The reason why we call the Muslim who drinks alcohol or has a girlfriend a Muslim is because these two
weaknesses are considered minor kufr, not major kufr.

The fornicator is not a believer (Mumin) while he is fornicating; and the thief is not a believer while he is
stealing; and the one who drinks alcohol is not a believer while he is drinking it.
(Saheeh Muslim, Book of Imaan, Chapter 24, Hadeeth no.57)
However if he should spy for the kuffar or dabble in black magic, we would have to call him a kaafir because
these two weaknesses are considered major kufr.

The above mentioned hadith means the man is not a mumin when fornicating with the girl, however he is still a
Muslim.

Therefore if he should die from a heart attack during his zina, he dies a Muslim and on Judgment Day he is
under the will of Allah (SWT).

If Allah (SWT) wills He can forgive the man for his zina because zina is minor kufr and send him straight to
Paradise Or Allah could send him to the hellfire to be punished for a while and then transfer him to the Paradise.

Because no Muslim will be condemned to the hellfire forever.

Narrated By Anas: The Prophet said, "Whoever said "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and
has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a barley grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever
said: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight
of a wheat grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said, "None has the right to be worshipped but
Allah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of an atom will be taken out of Hell."
[Al-Bukhari (44) and Muslim (193)]
The above-mentioned hadith is clear evidence that no Muslim will be condemned to the hellfire forever.

They will be taken out of hell with the intercession of Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ).

It is only kaafirs and hypocrites who will be condemned to the hellfire forever.
