Match Report;
Brisbane again prove no one is tougher with tight win over Auckland ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Auckland,NZ- With the death of Offensive Coordinator Ross Gigg still playing heavily on the minds of Brisbane players and coaches, the long flight to Auckland would have broken most teams. But Brisbane is still a team playing with a chip on its shoulder and that motivation is turning them into one of the greatest of all time.
Auckland were no push over today. They came ready to play. Very physical but also with a smart game plan that restricted both running yards of the backs but also kept Quarterback Robbie Vaivai contained in the pocket. Headlining this performance were the Defensive line with Dumanis Grey, Sione Beaumont and Theeran Vaurasi all starring.
Brisbane struck first with an opening drive highlighted by a long bomb down the right to Buddy Goodwin. Goodwin was open all day and his efforts helped swing the game in Brisbane's favour. Cade Joass came on after the drive stalled and kicked a field goal. Both teams then traded 3 pointers in the first half as the game became an intense arm wrestle for field position.
Auckland made some adjustments at halftime and this gave the offense enough spice to swing momentum there way. Jharal Lelei was having much more success throwing quickly out of a spread formation and he was on target to hit Tight End Aaron Lawrence over the middle to give the Pirates a 10-6 lead.
The game seemed to be swinging Auckland's way when Vaivai fumbled a scrambling run at his own 41. replays suggested he was down before the ball came loose but the call controversially was not overturned. But the Pirates needed to turn that luck into points but rookie Zach Clarke was stripped of the ball in a great play by Trent Brophy and the ball bounced fortuitously to Ronald Bartell who ran the distance 46 yards to score.
The tight struggled continued and just when Auckland were seemingly set to at least lock the scores up again BW Webb crashed down on Justin Blackmon to force another fumble and that was the game.
