The USC Catholic Center Capital Campaign

The USC Catholic Community has made significant progress with the Capital Campaign dedicated to
building a new Catholic Church and Community Center at USC. Having raised $30M of the $35M goal and
completed the design phase of the architecture, we are poised to begin the development of construction
documents and break ground for the new 20,000 sq. ft. complex in 2010.

Our Liturgical Design Committee has begun interviewing a variety of artisans to work on the interior artwork
for the church including the baptismal font, altar, ambo, reredos, stations of the cross and various statues.

Below are some of the highlights of our project -

Project Facts
• LEED Silver – Registered with U.S. Green Building Council
• Hard and Soft Cost approximately $23 million dollars to impact the community
• Duration of the project is 16 months
• Potential hires for construction will peak at approximately 240 laborers
• General Contractor:
o To be signatory to local unions (Prevailing wages on major trades)
o To work with local community outreach programs for employment
o To establish a construction career path for local community members
o To promote the hiring of minority and women owned business
• The architecture of the Center complements the USC campus buildings as to assist the students
with the linkage of the University and the Catholic Center.

Designed to fit perfectly on the original site, the beautiful new design plan features a church, an extensive
community room with a state of the art kitchen, a Student Center, a library, a welcoming courtyard terrace
that will accommodate receptions and parties, offices, meeting rooms, study halls and places for student
recreation and relaxation. Activities will include classes, recitals, discussion groups, peer tutoring,
continuing education, theological and community speakers, social and cultural events, extended retreat
programs and more.

Located on a main thoroughfare between student residences and the main campus, the Center will be
highly visible and welcoming to students, faculty and visitors to USC — a haven for both studying and
socializing. The new complex with its modern technologies will afford us the space to meet the needs of
over 10,000 Catholic students at USC successfully.

Perhaps most importantly, the USC Catholic Center serves as a central gathering place where USC
students form social, cultural, and intellectual connections. Such gathering places are a crucial factor in
student retention and graduation — a defining point in the way alumni identify with their alma mater. All
students are welcome to use the center before or after classes as a meeting place to catch up on studies,
make new friends and relax. By fostering informal social interaction, the USC Catholic Center helps
students avert potential feelings of isolation, fosters lifelong connections, and provides a physical home for
experiences that deepen the lessons learned in classrooms, laboratories, and lecture halls.
