INFORMATION SYSTEMS. HELPING THE
ISSUE OF POVERTY IN AFRICA.
INTRODUCTION
I have selected the problem of poverty. Poverty is a silent killer, assisted by starvation,
dehydration and diseases. UNICEF statistical analysis shows that 22,000 children die each
day as a consequence of poverty. The key to addressing this issue is to start by creating a
global awareness to educate and get more people involved around helping solve the matter.
Around 1.1 billion people in underdeveloped and third world countries have scarce access
to water and approximately 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation as a consequence of
this 1.4 million people die every year. It is an important issue and starting with the basics we
aim to provide clean drinking water to the country containing the most poverty, Africa,
through information systems. (Shah, 2013)
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To create world awareness of poverty, while helping those in need.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Charity mobile applicati ons industry
Industry: Charity mobile applications industry: Mobile applications that are created for
non-profit charity organizations.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High Buyer power is high as there are lots of mobile
applications in the charity mobile applications
industry that work to help those in poverty.
Although they may not donate water to Africa
there are applications that donate money or help

3

3
provide work etcto people in poverty. This
makes the buyer power high as it gives the buyer
more choice when it comes to choosing which
application they want to purchase or download.
(Marcus, 2010)
Supplier power: Low Supplier power as low as there are many software
companies that can create mobile applications.
We can also seek help from our software
partners.
Threat of new entrants: High The threat of new entrants is high as the entry
barrier is low and the cost of starting in the
charity mobile application industry is not high.
Threat of substitutes: High Threat of substitutes is high as there are multiple
charity organisations commonly used that raise
money to sponsor children, donate water, food
etcto underdeveloped countries. E.g. Child
Action Poverty Group, Global Poverty Project NZ,
World Vision.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High Rivalry among existing competitors is high as
there are multiple mobile applications created
already that work to solve the issue of poverty.
(Marcus, 2010)
Overall attractiveness of the industry: From the above analysis the overall attractiveness of
the industry appears to be low however taking into account that this industry is for charity
and non-profit mobile applications and the capital for starting out is low the industry and

could potentially drive a huge future market with modern ways to prevent poverty. These
mobile applications could provide huge benefits for non-profit organizations.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related
causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in the developing world (Water.org, 2014) The
application in which we have come up with is designed to specifically target people who are
interested in educating their selves about Poverty and getting on board with the cause. Our
application therefore provides our customers with the ability and resources to be able to
donate water for drinking and sanitation and furthermore learn more facts about Poverty.
3.4 The Product and Service
The product we have designed is an Android and Apple compatible mobile application that
serves the purpose of educating customers and donating clean water to Africa.
Fundamentally this mobile application runs like a standard quiz app and asks the customer a
range of multi-choice questions regarding poverty, globally. Upon answering each question
correctly World Vision are alerted immediately and water is processed to be donated to
undeveloped areas in Africa. This is a faster and more efficient service than anything else
currently invented.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Our suppliers and partners vary between different organizations and software companies.
The most important supplier and partner would help to design and develop the actual
application to be released into the market. We would work with WorldNZ Ltd as they
work with you to design a customised software application designed specifically to your
requirements (WorldNZ, 2011) and are a local company making them an accessible and
easy partner to work with. A further partner that is very important in the success of our
application is World Vision. As the application is targeted towards the issue of Poverty by
supplying Africa with clean water it is highly necessary we have a partner that will help fund
the application as well as be able to transport the water to these various undeveloped

5
areas. Joining and developing a partnership with the Google Play and Apple App Store is also
highly important In order to market and distribute the application.
3.6 Strategy: Broad Market Cost Leadership
The strategy applied to this application is a broad market cost leadership strategy as in
creating this application we are trying to create a global awareness about the extreme
consequences of Poverty. As the application is of low cost for the customer as to download
as it is a charity application, not one designed to generate profit. This makes it more
accessible to a wider range of the browsing market.
3.7 Value Chain Activity:
Technology development is the most important key value chain activity for our application.
In order to keep customers interested in answering questions we need to be able to create
updates that will prevent them from becoming bored, as well as updating the information as
world poverty statistics change.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK PROCESS- Customer feedback is a vital process in keeping this
application running. By proving the customer with the option to submit their feedback it
helps us to understand whether they are happy with the application and what changes we
need to apply in order to satisfy their needs. This way we can add value to our application
by attracting more customers in order to reach our companies vision.

3.8.2. PROTOTYPE TESTNG PROCESS Beta testing of prototype updates for the application is
important for customer satisfaction. Allowing customers the option to sign up for beta testing and
provide feedback gives us information on how the customer finds the prototype update before
realising it on application stores. This way we can insure that the release will improve the application
rather than making it unappealing to our market.

3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. FEEDBACK PROCESS SYSTEM This system is very important for the customers needs
as well as the continued running of the application. Consistent improvements and updates
of the application based off customer feedback will increase customers interested in
downloading the application and help donate water to Africa. This is needed to support the
functionalities and improve the application as well as achieving our companys vision.
3.10. 2. I NFORMATI ON GATHERING SYSTEM This system is important as it gathers research
on our customers which can be found via our feedback process system so we can market
our application to potential customers and keep on board our already existing ones. This
helps achieve our companys vision by involving more people and educating them about
global poverty
3.10. 3. - PROTOTYPE TESTNG SYSTEM - This system is important as it tests updates with
customers who are willing to be a part of the beta testing process before releasing updates
to the public that could potentially cause a decrease in use.

CONCLUSION
Poverty is a global issue. The first major step to putting an end to poverty is by providing
underdeveloped countries with clean water for basic sanitation and to drink. Creating an
application will educate people worldwide about the issue while donating water to Africa
and help slowly, bring an end to Poverty. As mobile applications are a part of everyday life
this will encourage people to download the application as its familiar and easily accessible.
