First of all, I would like to welcome our newest members, Ken Sum and Matt Yee.
They will be great assets to our chapter.
At the 2007 Year End Convention, Jonathan Cook was the only First Timer and
received great prizes. Congratulations to Eddie Kam for being honored at JCI Senator
and Gordon Goo for being honored at Honorary Hawaii Jaycees State President!
At the Night in Chinatown Festival and Parade, I got to ride in a red Corvette in
the parade. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be recognized by the community. I would to thank Gifford
Chang, Kelfred Chang, Denton Chun, Paul Chun, Leonard Kam, Gordon Goo, and their committee for putting
on a great project. Also, many thanks to volunteers from the Jaycees, Oahu Civil Defense and guests who provided
manpower. Last, but not least, a thank you to those people who purchased the Year of the Rat Button/Ribbon that we
sold for our fundraiser. HCJ-er Louis Law designed the eye-catching ribbon graphic.
At the Awards & Installation Banquet, we bid farewell to the 2007 board, represented by 2007 President Shirley
Lam and 2007 Director (& 2006 HCJ President) Emily Chan. I was officially sworn in as President by Patrick
Tomiyasu, this year’s Hawaii Jaycees President. I was nervous and couldn’t believe that I had become President after
being in the Jaycees for 13 years. Thanks to my fellow Jaycees members and guests who were in attendance. But
special thanks to my Board for helping out at this event.
I hope to see you all at our upcoming projects, International Dining Out at Tudo De Bom and Mixed Plate. If you
have any ideas for projects, feel free to contact me or anyone on the Board.
It’s A Girl!

Night In Chinatown Report!
It was still dark outside when Jaycees started showing up in Chinatown to start their work at 6AM. We were off &
running immediately, helping set up and manning the NIC Headquarters. At start time – 9AM – the HCJ volunteers
were in place for their main work of the project. One group ran our annual parking lot fundraiser, keeping the public
happy and their cars secure while they enjoyed the festival.
The remaining Chinese Jaycees were responsible for our booth right on the main drag. There they entertained both
kids and adults with the time-tested Fishing For Prizes game.
Young and old were delighted by the goodies that they caught from
the Jaycees’ pond. Special recognition to Lindley Low for shouting
‘Let’s Go Fishing!’ at passers-by all day – without being punched
once.
To properly thank everyone would take a whole newsletter by itself but we wanted to at least acknowledge the
great people who came out and helped us and Night In Chinatown itself (listed in no particular order):

Hawaii Jaycees End-of-Year Convention Report
The 2007 Year End Convention was a nail biter as usual. HCJ had maintained a Top 3 seat in the Chapter
competition throughout the year, but that didn’t mean we’d still be up there once the final tallying was done.
It was with this in mind that our proud HCJ group went into the evening. The chapter’s fortunes were raised
greatly by the 2nd Place finish of our President, Lily Fung in the very
competitive Speak Up contest. If that wasn’t enough, Lily also took the
award for Most Outstanding District 5 Member. A fitting recognition
of her Jaycees work throughout the preceding year.
But even that was not the end of the HCJ side of the evening. Our chapter’s perennial mentor, and past member,
Gordon Goo, was surprised with the bestowing of the title of Honorary Hawaii Jaycees State President on him.
Gordon’s record of work, achievement and service is matchless and we’re proud to count him in the ranks of HCJ.
That was the culmination of the evening and it couldn’t have ended on a better note. Congratulations, Gordon – you
deserve the honor. We’ll continue to look to your experience and knowledge to help guide us.

coming one.

A Look Back at Healthy Baby 2007
Memories & Observations from the 2007 Meadow Gold Health Baby Contest
By Ramy So (Healthy Baby Co-Chair)
It is about that time of the year again! The preparation for the 55th Annual Meadow Gold Healthy Baby Contest is
around the corner. Since 1953, the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees
have been coordinating this contest with Meadow Gold Dairies.
The Healthy Baby Contest is intended to heighten awareness of
the health and well being of our Island keiki by promoting the
importance of proper nutrition. Last year, Ryan Ng and I had
the pleasure of co-chairing this event and immersing ourselves
in the community.
Meadow Gold Dairies coordinated a media blitz, which included television, radio and publications. Ryan Ng put
on his best outfit and hit the morning news circuit, promoting the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees and the baby contest. 500
baby entries came rolling in.
On September 22nd, after two preliminaries, Dream Takemoto was announced as the 54th Annual Meadow Gold
Healthy Baby winner. She was awarded with many toys and a $2,500 savings bond. This project help raise awareness
of the importance of teaching children good health and nutrition habits at an early age. Establishing proper habits at
an early childhood can lead to living a healthy lifestyle.
It would not have been a success without the many volunteers from the local Jaycees community who lent a
helping hand. This project was a very rewarding experience and we encourage any new member to undertake this
HCJ signature project.
[ Editor’s Note: Ramy So & Ryan Ng won deserved recognition for their work heading up the Healthy Baby project, receiving the
HCJ 2007 Signature Project Chair Award. Much mahalo to them both for a job well done!
Ryan Ng has been a Wrestling fan since childhood. He once made a ‘Wrestling Championship Belt’ out of cardboard & tin
foil. He wore it constantly – until his boss finally told him to take it off last week. Sorry, ladies, he’s taken! ]

Now Gearing Up for the 2008 Meadow Gold Healthy Baby Contest
Stay tuned - We’re now getting ready for the 2008 Healthy Baby Contest. We’ll need help from all of you as we work
on mounting another successful event for the 55th year. Let’s keep our perfect record going on one of our Signature
Projects. We can do it.

In Memory of Henry Chang, 3rd HCJ President
By Gordon Goo
I am sad to share with you the news that we have lost an old friend and a staunch supporter of the Jaycees in
Hawaii. A Past Chapter President of the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, Past Hawaii Jaycees State President, JCI Senator
#2342 and USJCC Ambassador #252. Henry was best known as a "Las Vegas Gambling Specialist". He loved to
teach people on the theory and enjoyment of gambling in Las Vegas. In his heyday he would organize junkets to Las
Vegas for various groups and everyone had a great time! A successful businessman, Henry was a Realtor, Insurance
consultant for Finance Factors Inc.
Henry was also a man of the community, active in local politics, Jaycees, Rotary and the Lions. He often
mentioned that his wife Mable was his "silent" supporter and without her help it would not be possible for him to do
the many things that he did. In 2004, the Hawaii JCI Senate / Oldtimers recognized Henry K.C. Chang as their
"Outstanding Oldtimer of the Year". This is when we recognize one of our own who, after distinguishing himself as
an active member of the Jaycees, took the skills that he learned in the Jaycees and utilized them successfully in the
community.
It was clear that this is just what Henry did when we heard of his achievements as presented by Mr. Ronald Au, a
fellow Past President of the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, Past President of the Hawaii Jaycees, Past President of the
United States Jaycees and a Past World President of Junior Chamber International. Henry was a key member of the
"election team" for Ronald Au to both the post of United States Jaycees President and as the World President of
Junior Chamber International.
Please join us in extending our deepest Condolences on the passing of Henry K.C. Chang to Mrs. Mable Chang
and the Chang family. It is said that the "loss of one" diminishes us all. So, can it also be said that the "lessons from
one" empowers us all? We will miss Henry but let us not forget his lessons either.
____________________________________
Honolulu Chinese Jaycees offers its heartfelt condolences in remembrance of one of the forefathers of our
chapter. As Gordon wrote, may we all remember Henry Chang’s lessons and follow his lifelong example of
service and friendship. We ask all of our members, past and present, to keep the Chang family in your
thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
