June 1 is Family Day in morning worship and that evening at our LexKids Block Party. Our young families will be the focus of the day, as theyll be leading us in worship at both morning services then cranking up their Summer Road Trip that evening. Regardless of your age, though, youll want to come and be inspired by their faith, energy and vision for ministry. Ill bring a special message that morning called The Battle We Cant Afford to Lose. June 8, following our normal Sunday morning schedule, well have our annual Picnic at the Pond, including an outdoor baptism. Most of you know how moving and inspirational this event is every year. Free tickets for the picnic are available at the church offce during the week as well as at the Welcome Center on Sundays. Also, if the Lord has been dealing with you about your need for Jesus, this is a perfect time to receive Him into your heart and follow him in believers baptism. June 29 is our annual Celebration of Freedom, when our church family comes together in worship to thank God for His blessings to our nation and to recognize the many men and women who have served in our nations military. As we strive to fulfll our mission to make disciples of Jesus here in Lexington and around the world, its important that we embrace the diversity we share as multiple generations under one roof. Our children and students are fnding their own expressions of worship. They are hungry to discover ways to make a difference in the world around them. We see young moms living out their faith with each other as they meander their way through parenthood as biblically soundly as they can. Many dads today are learning how to keep their homes upright and their cars running without needing to solely depend on professionals. Older adults are retiring and living longer and now fnd themselves back on the front-lines of child care, allowing the parents of their grandchildren to go to work every day. I love fnding Scripture that reinforces our need to worship and do life together. Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them that they could choose whom they would serve- themselves, other gods, the world- but as for he and his household, they would serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15). We are such a great diverse family. Keep pursuing ways to connect with the multiple generations in our church. The more we do that, the more we will look like Joshua and his household. Blessings! All children are invited to join their parents in the Worship Center for a kid-focused ser- vice featuring kids testimonies, great worship, interactive Bible teaching and a special sermon from Pastor Mike about fghting for the Next Generation. We are taking our Core students to HiWire on June 6th. We will meet at the FLC at 12 pm for lunch and then we will head on to the complex. On June 16th, we are taking 70 students to The Journey Camp in Toccoa Falls, Georgia. Would you commit to praying for these students? Blessings, Ian Geimer Associate Pastor Next Generation Ministries Ian@lexingtonbaptist.org Orange: How We Do Ministry for the Next Generation As volunteers and leaders, we will get an average of 40 hours with each of the kids in our ministry in one year. What if, in that short time frame, we could help them believe that there is a Heavenly Father who loves them un- conditionally? Help engage their lives in a mission to the world that is bigger than themselves? And even connect them to believers and experiences that they will never forget? This is the heartbeat of the Orange Conference. Orange is all about equipping the local church to train up its leaders to partner with fam- ilies and build thriving ministries. Their philosophy is to combine the two areas that infu- ence kids lives the most: church and family. This past month the NextGen Ministry here at LBC (plus some of our amazing leaders) got to go and experience this amazing conference. We, as church leaders and volunteers, lead out of desire to see change in students, and even greater, success in their lives. From going to the Orange Conference this year, I expe- rienced how we cannot do that unless we partner with families along the way. Like I mentioned earlier, church leaders are only with students for an average of 40 hours a year. That should not only motivate us to see the importance of partnering with parents and doing ministry together, but it should challenge us to move forward making sure we are doing all that we can to help students see Jesus. This world is held by the clutches of sin, and we as ministry leaders and parents must come together and be- come a powerful, unifed force against the plan of the enemy in our kids lives. God used this conference not only to motivate me and our leaders to keep going strong, but it was also great training in some of the tough areas of ministry that we dont always know how to handle. If you are thinking about being a part of ministry to our students and kids in any way, or if you currently are involved, I would love to encourage you to attend the Orange conference or tour if youre able, or, just ask one of our ministry leaders more about it. This is one of the greatest ways to continue to grow in your understanding of ministry and the reasoning behind our curriculum and the way we do things here at Lexington Baptist Church. Blessings and Prayer, Jordan Herndon High School Ministry Director JHerndon@lexingtonbaptist.org Upcoming Student Ministry Events 7 In May, our 7th graders and their parents went on The Passage retreat, which was held at the Ridgecrest Con- ference Center in Black Mountain, North Carolina. This was an intentional weekend for parents to get away with their 7th grader, unbothered by distractions, and spend some quality time with each other. The weekend was full of games, biblical sessions geared around families, a hike in the beautiful cool mountains and of course smores! The highlight of the weekend was Sunday morning; parents were given the opportunity to give their son/daughter a special blessing. The blessing time was intimate with each family- it gave parents a chance to share their hearts and for students to see un- conditional love from their parents. The Passage is a great example of how Next Generation Ministries want to partner with families during these milestones and for the spiritual formation of each student. If your family has a 6th grade student, be on the lookout for The Passage next spring!! Daniel Walker Middle School Ministry Director Daniel@lexingtonbaptist.org 8 Are You One of Gods Singers? I have been reading a book recently called Gods Singers by Dave Williamson. Dave has clearly outlined the direction that the Lord has already been leading us in the development of the LBC Praise & Worship Choir. We are seeking to become a true Worship Choir in which the choir members are not there out of a sense of habit, duty or even church commitment. Dave describes a Worship Choir as those who are in a covenant relationship with God to be worship leaders... and the best kind of worship leader is one who has responded to the call of God upon their life to be a lead worshipper. A true worship choir does not exist to simply carry on an expected obligation to come to rehearsals and learn notes and rhythms in order to fll a perceived need for weekly service duty on Sundays. A true worship choir, which I see God growing here at LBC, is a family of Believers united in their covenant to lead others in the worship of our Lord Jehovah. A true worship choir does not approach re- hearsal as tedious or mundane, but rather an act of worship as the message and the music are internalized in our hearts. This is so that when we sing our songs of praise with the orchestra, or the band or accapella, we are focused upon the Giver of Life, the Creator of All and we experience being in His glorious presence. New Sermon Series Begins Sunday, June 8 Toddler Time at the Family Life Center Tuesday mornings from 10 to 11:30 Starting June 10th, the FLC will be offering Toddler Time on Tuesday mornings this summer from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This will be a time to let lit- tle ones to run off some energy while parents have a chance to fellowship with one another while supervising their children. Current news fashes with protests, fghting and unrest all around the world. Disasters strike and wipe out entire towns. In both situations, this usually causes large numbers of people to become refugees that are totally vul- nerable and helpless. Can we at Lexington Baptist Church help? This question and an invitation to host a refugee family that had to fee their home country because of religious persecution has drawn your Global Advisory Team to research this topic. Here are some things we are learning: 1) We need to welcome but be careful not to overwhelm. a. The family must make many adjustments to living in a strange new country: learn the language, apply for documents and assistance and learn to do normal things like shop for groceries. b. The kids have to get registered for and acclimated to school. Many details and new culture have to be learned and dealt with. 2) Giving too much attention and assistance can actually be detrimental. As we prepare to receive this refugee family of four into our church family, please take time to pray. Imagine what you would do and feel if you suddenly had to leave the United States with no possible way you could ever return. Soon, we will begin a Refugee Team that will guide LBC through the maze of responding to the refugee situation in a healthy and productive way. Our break from teaching at the kindergarten was a blessing, and we look forward to going back, but we have real- ly enjoyed the opportunity God is providing through our neighbor. She wanted to help us with lan- guage, and reads with us once a week. Its opened the door for us to reciprocate by helping her son and some other kids in the neigh- borhood that she encouraged to participate practice their English. This has opened doors we couldnt have imagined. Though English is a strong felt need, many fear talking with foreigners, and shy away from us if they happen to be outside. Though it may be only a crack, some doors to other families have been opened for us to be the hands and feet of Jesus. May we serve Him faithfully as we serve them. Please pray for these relation- ships to continue and for God to open doors to share about Jesus. Pray also for language learn- ing, and other ways to share our lives as ambassadors of Christ. From Partners in Central Asia Fruit of our seed sowing in Cen- tral Asia has seemed very slow in coming, and our sharing is of- ten met with much resistance. We have often felt discouraged, feel- ing that no one is interested in the MESSAGE. Last January, I felt like the Lord highlighted the phrase, Walk by faith and not by sight for 2013, and that is what we have clung too, seeking to be faithful where we are, whether or not we see results. For some reason, God chose this last month to let us see it coming! I have a friend who is interested; can you come and share about this faith with him? This was the frst question that led to several evenings of sharing with a very open man in his 30s. Come and share with my boss, he is open to these things. Was the second request from another source, which also led to multiple meetings with the two of them, leading to, We have a friend in another town who we know would be open to Jesus, well invite him to come to town & you can share with him too. These are three friends in their 40s who will now meet and discuss these things and pray together. Another came to us and said I now believe the way of Jesus is truth because 1. He is alive and our prophet is dead. Our proph- et even said Jesus is alive, 2. Our book is just a copy of your book, but yours is more clear and un- derstandable, and 3. Ive been searching for truth all my life. When I found it in The Book, it was pretty obvious. This com- ment was made by a young man in his 20s to whom wed given the scriptures a couple of years ago, and with whom weve had an on- going relationship. From One of Our Partnerships J is about my age, a Tajik from Uz- bekistan. He would likely still call himself a Muslim but declares Je- sus is the Son of God, so he is pret- ty far down the Way. Two weeks ago, we were supposed to be studying Luke 22 in a food court near his bazaar, but he forgot his New Testament. I was going to summarize the chapter, but J said, Hey, I did read it, I just forgot to bring the Book. He proceeded to tell me about the entire chapter. I was surprised and pleased. As we discussed this, S joined us. I had not met S before, so I did not know whether or not hed be an- tagonistic. I read Col. 1:21-23 and told them how I was encouraged by the fact that God can make us holy, unblemished and not suscep- tible to condemnation. J listened, got excited, and said, But you just missed a BIG part. The reason why this happens is because of the sac- rifcial death of Jesus the Messiah! S then listened to the Gospel in Js words, not mine. Praise God and pray for J as he continues to grow in his understanding of who Jesus is and as he openly shares that with others. 14 What One Looks Like My husband, Trevor, and I have been members at LBC for almost four years, and Ive been blessed with a job as a staff member here for a year, now. Since we made this place our home, our lives have changed in more ways than one. When we frst visited, we had a six-month old son and a strong desire to change our lives for the better. Parenthood has an amazing way of setting your priorities straight! God used the birth of our son to bring us closer to Him and to each other. I knew we needed to connect with a Sunday School class when we came, but it was scary! Being the new peo- ple can be hard and intimidating, but I lovingly dragged my husband along when we saw a new class advertised for young married couples. We joined that class with three other couples and eventually, we all merged with a larger class, fnding our true home at LBC. This group has become our family. We have grown closer to each other through our desire to grow closer to God and learn how to serve Him. Weve been there for each other through happiness and tragedy- supporting each other with meals after new babies were born, by attending funerals when the unthinkable occurred and just being there for the ordinary parts of living life together. Since the start of our time here, weve been blessed with another son and gone through an Autism diagnosis for our oldest. I cannot imagine going through those things alone, without a fellowship of believers supporting us along the way. Through each season of change in our lives, our group has grown closer together. It doesnt matter whats dif- ferent among us. Whats important is one simple similarity: we love Jesus. Thats why were all here, and thats what it means to be one church. To show up for each other, to love and support each other because we belong to ONE body: the body of Christ.
