P R E S r o E N T ' S C O L U M N
I've decided to try a new format this month instead of the usual one. My thoughts of Spring and
traveling to London are as random as these thoughts but here goes...
Great job to Gerald Radlauer, Barbara Brittan, Steve Quinn, Jack Brennan and Tara Maguire on race
directorships that were amazing. We had a record turnout and a great time was had by all. Thank you
very much to all the TRRC volunteers who really make these races work. It's not easy sitting out in
the cold for hours and making sure that the race runs well.
Happy feet awards go out to all the TRRC members who have gone into New York City and around
the area and participated in races as representatives of the best club in New York. Keep on truckin'
and keep those feet happy.
Congratulations to all the Spring marathoners who traveled to Boston, Big Sur, Jersey Shore and London to run the 26.2 miles around these areas. I hope
you enjoyed the miles and the journey. Great job especially with the tough winter we had.
Give it a break to all the TRRC members who aren't running as fast as they used to run. My Favorite T-shirt in the NYRRC marathon read, "The Older
I Get the Faster 1 Ran." Of course there are my idols Jack Brennan and Harry Neeson that just get better. They are amazing.
HELR.. TRRC need members to take leadership positions within the club. These are anything from a race director to dinner dance coordinator to vice
president. 1 have been warned and know from history that people do not volunteer by a plea in the newsletter. So what we are looking for is people who
love this club and would like to give back to the running community what it has given them. It is a tough request but I can say from experience, it's a
wonderful place to be in your life and It feels good. Please call me and we can talk about your role in TRRC or anything.
1 hope to see all of you on May 9th at 7:30 at Downing Park for our monthly meeting. It's a great chance to meet other runners and trade war stories.
I hope to see you all then, and have a wonderftil Spring. Lee

Hearts, Stars and Lucky Sharms
for Runners at TRRC St. Patty's Race
by Jim MacLean
North County News
It was windy and a bit cold, but the sun was shining
and there were a lot of smiling eyes out early on
Sunday rooming as more than 300 runners took
part in the Taconic Road Runners Club St. Patrick's
Day races at F.D.R. Park in Yorktown.
First up, there was the two-mile fun run complete
with leprechaun's, dogs and a lot of baby strollers as
145 runners competed in the race.
Then came the main event as 190 runners took off
for the more serious lOK race around the park.
Bryan Kovalsky went out to establish a quick pace
and he maintained the lead throughout most of the
race. Kovalsky was ahead by about 100 yards as the runners completed their
rst lap around the park, and he was the rst runner to cross the nish line
wi th a ti me of 33:36.
Kovalsky was more than a minute ahead of his nearest competitor as the 22-
year-old took home top honors from the race.
Francis Burdett was the second nisher to cross the line as he completed the
1 0 k c o u r s e i n 3 4 : 4 6 .
About 15 seconds later, Stephen Marsalese was the third nisher as he came
home in a time of 35:02. Like Kovalsky in the mens' race, Emmy Stocker
made it look easy as she nished more than a minute ahead of her nearest
competitor as the rst woman to cross the nish line. Trailing at the midway
point but closing fast, Stocker poured it on to pull away from the eld with a
time of 42:07. Misty Verma was the second female nisher as the 25-year-old
crossed the line with a time of 43:26. Heather Case was the third female as she
nished at 44:52. Jay Duggan was fourth overall and rst in his age group as
the 40-year-old crossed the nish line at 36:42. Yorktown graduate Dan
Amrick was rst in his age group as the 19-year-old crossed the line at 37:48
t o n i s h f t h o v e r a l l .
Rounding out the top ten nishers among the men were Seth Denenberg,
Kevin Barrett, David Ryan, Roy Altman and Jason Bushnell. Ken Pfaff was
11"^ overall, while Nick Caswell was 12* overall and rst in his age group as the
51-year-old nished at 39:39.
Alyssa Lifrieri was rst in her age group and fourth overall among women
nishers as the 36-year-old was just six seconds behind Case at 44:58. Mindy
Yuen was the h woman overal l wi th a ti me of 45:56.
Other age group winners included Jesse Naftel as the 16-year-old nished at
41:32 to win his age group. Brian Moeller was rst in his group as the 14-year-
old crossed the line at 42:42. Harry Neeson (62) was rst at 44:05, and Joseph

four seconds ahead of Greg Swiatocha (16).

Ot her Races. Ot her Pl aces. . .
Nat ur e * s Tr i al s
by Eric Kreuter
As I run through the brush and the brambles,
I realize life is full of obstacles.
Yet mine are easy in nature.
My cross is small, my burden light.
I should not be heard to complain.
God has bestowed much in my life.
There are others wi th heavi er burdens.
I must look at mine with a smile.
I can overcome all of them with light feet.
There are no hills too steep to climb, with effort.
No rivers too deep to cross, with courage.
No road too long to traverse, with endurance.
I can endure to the end.
But will I appreciate the sun when it is hot?
Or the waters when they turn icy cold?
I cannot extend the day even for a second.
Nor lessen the frequency ofsprings rains.
/ must accept nature s elements as they occur
When I stumble on the path I won't complain.
Even if 1 become crippled, each fall is a lesson.
J must test the unknown path ahead.
Ready to fall or proceed in due course.
There will be decisions to make.
I will make them with thought, but boldly.
My path requires consistent effort.
Enduring pain, feeling renewed energy.
1 am sustained because of the path.
Through rocks and mud I will continue forward.
Up ahead is destiny facing me.
Will 1 have the courage to look at it squarely?
1 willingly submit myself to the test.
Eric just completed the London
Marathon and plans another for the fall.

Got your e-mail address from www.runner.org page. Just
wanted to thank you and your volunteers for a great event
yesterday (Mudders and Grunters). As I watch the snow fall
this morning^ I wish it would have arrived a day earlier!
The trails were great, well-marked, challenging. The cookies
were delicious. I speak for all the New York Harriers who
were in attendance: we had a great time, and we appreciate
the work that all of you put into it
tVe hope to show up with an even-larger contingent next
year.

Provides Opportunity for Members to
Save Up to $90 Each
Shrub Oak, April 18 First it's a postage increase, then it's the "dot.coms"
tanking, followed by the rest of the market, then it's the China spy plane
crisis, now it's a TRRC membership fee increase.
Do these people think we're made of money? So how come?
Basically, we're blaming it on the fact that we get a lot of member com
plaints about their not receiving our S"* class mailings of the newsletter.
Third class gives us a low bulk rate, but unfortunately it is often the case
that your local post ofce treats your newsletter as just so much junk mail
(go gure). The solution is to go to 1" class postage for our newsletter
mailings. To cover this exorbitant added cost we are forced (kicking &
screaming) to raise our basic individual TRRC membership fee by $3.00 to
$18.00 (what nerve!) and our family membership will go from $25.00 to
$30.00. Individual "student" (under 19) membership will remain at $ 10.00.
This outrageous gouging, the rst such increase in almost a decade, will
commence for memberships paid after July 4, 2001, so your last chance to
renew or become a new member at the old rates will be at the Putnam
County Classic.
Now look at the bright side - consider how much you can save by a
multiple year renewal. How long do you think you're gonna last? Signup
for 20 years, save $60.00; sign up for 30 years and save a whopping $90.00.
That's ve years for FREE!!! How's that for a silver lining?

Women's Teams Report
By Debbie Kenney
The women's March race in the Club Championship Grand Prix was the
Brooklyn Half-Marathon. The logistics of Ais race are difcult because
the race starts down by Coney Island and nishes up in Prospect Park.
The race start time of 8:00 dictates that we meet at Rocky's Deli at the
ungodly hour of 5:15! This year there was a strong wind blowing down
Ocean Parkway and it made the rst nine miles extremely tough. A special
thanks to all the women who came out and ran this one!! Here's how we

We really have some dedicated, enthusiastic women miming for our teams!
Our next race is the April 22"^ Niketown Run for the Parks. In May we
have the Mother's Day Half Marathon and the Mini-Marathon lOK is on
June 9"". For further information, take a look at our link - Women's Teams

Water and gatorade are placed on course by volunteers. Distances vary
from 4 to 20+ miles at a wide variety of paces.
First water stop: 5 gallons of water, at least 3 half gallon bottles
of Gatorade and 100 cups, (the rst water stop is at the mail
boxes, 3.3 miles from the pump house)
Second water stop: 2 gallons of water, 1 half gallon or 2-3 quarts
of Gatorade and 30-40 cups (the second water stop is 2.2 miles on
Quaker Ridge Rd from stop 1)
In the hot weather you may want to put it on ice. Some volunteers like to
dress it up a bit with tissues, paper towels, fruit, power bars, candy, etc. but
none of that is necessary. There is an award given out at the dinner dance

Mi l l e n n i u m Mu d B a t h
by Steve Quinn
The Millennium Mud Bath occurred
on Sunday March 25 at FDR State
Park. Mothernature provided us
with a ne venue. This year fea
tured perhaps the most mud in the
last 5 years, a water crossing about
3 feet deep and packed ice and
snow resembling a glacier at the
3.5-mile mark. The race director was pleased that he did
not get his truck stuck in the mud this year.
One hundred sixty-eight (30 more than last year) fun loving
participants threw caution to the wind, forgot their ages and
did everything their mother told them never to do. This year's
race was won by last year's second place winner, Gerry
Sullivan, with last year's winner, Armando Oliviera, nished
second. In the ner category Joy Jaworski once again won
the race, since our records are not so good and our memo
ries only marginally better we know she has won at least
every M&G run back to and including 1994. See the com
plete results and some fme pictures of the water crossing on
our website and elsewhere in this newsletter. This year again
featured awards for the "Muddiest & Bloodiest", "Big Snort"
and "Razorback". The rst is self explanatory, the second is
for the most artful water entry and the "Razorback" is a new
award given to someone that represents the true spirit of the
race. Regrettably the race director gave the awards but
does not recall the names of the winners, but you know who
you are so why not send me e-mail and I'll publish it in the
next newsl et t er.
A race like this could not go off without the help of volun
teers, this year was no exception. Thanks to John Hallinan,
Pete Meisler, Brian Wheaton, Joe Porcaro, Fred Loehfelm,
Joe Handleman, Ed McLaughlin, Bob Davis and Jim Whalen
for help in laying out the course. Thanks to Peg Meisler,
Rudi and Justin Einhom, Rich Adamski, Susan Solow, Steve
Albert, Debbie Kenny, Dave O'Toole, Beverly and Don
McCann, Don Villenueve, and Bill and Joanne Bertram for
help on race day.
Many races are similar but this one has its unique features
and that causes unique events to occur This race was no
exception to that rule. Cardinal Eagan sent his personal
emissary to bless the race, Fr. Louis Jerome from St. Patrick's
in Yorktown ran the race. Rumor is he tried to run on and
then part the waters, buthe got wet. Jim Manning from
Yorktown ran with two small children. He gured they would
last a half-mile or so. He carried one across the water while
the other used the bridge, they all nished. Brian Saroken
carried his mother. Lee, across the water, well almost across,
he dropped her (check out the website picture). Then there
was Bob Davis who laid out the course on Saturday and
declared that he wished he had not signed up to run but he
did and he won an age group. Second in that age group was
Jose Rojas, Jose works in the park and has been one of our
unsung park volunteers for years. He has marveled at all
those crazy runners and wondered what it was all about.
Well Jose found out and took second in his age group. Ken
Martin reported that at the rst mud bog he came across a
runner sitting in the mud with his hands into it up to his el
bows. When asked what he was doing the runner reported
he was looking for a shoe. Ken suggested he try Super
Runners Shop in White Plains and continued on. This is a
r a c e .
Over 30 runners from high school cross countiy teams added
much spirit to the race this year and contributed many of the
11 teams that competed for the Geronimo cup. Thanks to
Taconic member and cross country coach Tim Fulton for
bringing them. The winner of the coveted Geronimo Cup
this year was the Somer's Studs, Terry Cordner, Brian
Konczewski, Mike Pond and Greg Swiatocha. You guys
are required to come next year and bring the cup back.
Thanks to everyone who came and helped out and made
this the biggest M&G in my memory.

In searing eariy Spring heat, the laconic
Road Runners' crack volunteer staff helped the
Rye Derby to an excellent race. At registration,
starting more than three hours before the race
went off, were Kathleen D'Ottavio, Rich Adamski,
Carol Hansen, Bill and Joanne Bertram, Jenn
Latham (visiting from China just to do this) and
Nancy Young. Arriving with our new trailer to
the nish line from it's housing spot at the Nash's
were Bill Foley and Steve Quinn, who double
handedly set up the nish line. The course was
measured and managed by Gary Steinel and, all
the way from Cape Cod, Paul Fendler. Paul, with
Eamonn Coughlan, were the originators of this
race years ago. The years were not showing on
Coughlan, the only masters to run under 4 min
utes for the mile, who showed up to run a relaxed
race. Adding to our volunteer core was the rac
ing contingent fresh from their great showing in
Central Park: Deb Kenney, Scott Abercrombie,
Joe Porcaro and Tony Galfano. Pete Meisler
manned the clicker, as he has done regularly at
our races for many years, missing only one race
due to a new hip.
Oh-the winners were fast and really skinny.

by Bronislaw (**Bronek") Czech
It was a gorgeous February afternoon. There was not a single cloud in a
sunny sky, and the 70-degree weather seemed unreal. The snow-covered
summits of Popocatepetl and IxtaccihuatI were clearly visible in the dis
tance above the smog covered Mexico City valley. Despite these almost
perfect conditions, Alejandro, my new running partner, and I struggled to
run up a long but not overly
steep hill. I was back again in
my favorite running surround
ings, almost 9,000 feet above
sea level,
Last winter, Anna and I eagerly
responded to an invitation from
Al ex and Mar t a Pose, our
Argentinean friends, to visit
them at their house in the moun
tains near Mexico City. As we
had already known from our
previous visits, the rapid change
of climate, and especially the
change of altitude, inevitably
would bring some unpleasant

breath and faster than usual heartbeat were to be expected. This time I
brought along a heart monitor so I could follow my acclimatization process
more closely.
During the rst couple of days my morning resting pulse was higher than
normal by about 25 points. In the beginning, a combination of higher alti
tude and hills made every run a battle as my lungs labored on less oxygen.
My legs became numb very quickly. Even at these sub Rocky Mountain
heights, the human body loses water very fast, and drinking lots of uids
plays an important role in fast acclimatization. Thus, four days and several
gallons of water later, my resting heart rate decreased noticeably, although
it was still greater than at home in Westchester. Even if my acclimatization
was going well, it was not enough to allow quality workouts which require
much more oxygen than my body could assimilate. Under those circum
stances, the best 1 could do was to resort to lengthening my daily mileage at
a slow pace and give up any type of speedwork.
My training became more enjoyable with the arrival of Marta's brother.
Alejandro ew in directly from the Argentinean coast, and running at higher
elevation air was a new experience for him. Nevertheless, he decided to
continue training for his rst Ciudad Mar del Plata Marathon. The next day
after his arrival he joined me for a run. The beginning runs were as hard for
him as they were for me, but by the time my vacation was over, our runs
became both longer and faster. Even if the immediate gains of our high
altitude training were going to disappear quickly after returning to sea level,
the memory of our runs in the thinner air will last for a long time. 1 am
condent that this new experience will benet Alejandro in his marathon
training, and he will do well in December in Mar del Plata. As for me, a
veteran runner, holding pace continues to be an up hill battle even at sea
l evel .

Who Woul d Ever Run a Marathon?
By Dr. Tim Maggs
For anyone who's ever crossed that ne line, the one that only takes 26.2
miles to get to, and now owns the title of "marathon nisher", you've
probably been asked this question many times. The insinuations in the
question are that anyone who would ever consider running a marathon bor
ders on insanity or down right lunacy. Well, do you want to know what I
t h i n k ?
I t h i n k . . .
The marathon should be a requirement for all kids graduating high
school today. All kids would have to complete a marathon before
graduating, or would have to work 40 hours a week doing community
clean up (for free) until they do complete one.
The marathon should become part of an incentive program for prison
ers who want early release.
The rst treatment for anyone with high blood pressure, weight prob
lems, psychological disorders, bowel problems, upper respiratory difTi-
culties, self-esteem issues or anxiety disorders should not be medication
or group therapy, but to complete a marathon.
If anyone is caught being a bully in life, regardless of age, we should have
some legislative body we can report them to and this body has the
authority to convict this individual and sentence them to run a mara
thon. Arrogance is bad, humility is good. Marathons promote humility.
Anyone sentenced to "community service" must run a marathon. What
better community service could be achieved than to get someone in the
community healthier, both mentally and physically?
More serious crimes might require 2 marathons in one year, a sentence
that would not allow any time off from training. (Whoa, would this be
an inconvenience for someone not used to working out?)
There should be a 50% discount on all health insurance premiums with
proof-of-running a marathon each year,
Community leaders and politicians should be required to run a marathon
each year, rather than annoying everyone by going door-to-door mak
ing promises they're unable to keep. A marathon will continually en
courage "honest work" instead of more rhetoric the world doesn't need.
Leading by example has always proven to be successful.
Any family owning more than one vehicle must all run a marathon in
order to get registrations for every vehicle over one.
All policemen and remen must run one marathon per year to be able to
continue wearing a badge.
Anyone who isn't happy in life, can't gure out why life isn't giving
back the way it should and is looking for that bigger house, perfect soul-
mate or winning lottery ticket, join in and run a marathon. I'm sure
you'll nd the answer somewhere along the way.
something to look forward to at the beginning of the day and something to be
proud of by the end of the day. And we all inherently know this powerful
factwe're doing something that most people will never have the guts to try.
We're running a marathon. Our self-esteem goes up dramatically. In fact,
isn't the scale looking a little kinder these days? Those clothes that just never
seemed to t on that Monday-morning diet plan all of a sudden t perfectly.
The big clincher in this life-altering metamorphis a person goes through
occurs on that rst day that someone asks you "Have you lost weight?".
There's no turning back now!
And the day we cross that nish line, the day we complete the journey we
started 6 or 8 or 10 months earlier, that's the day we can't wait to start all over
again on our next chapter. For what we learn is one simple (icl"Who
wouldn't want to run a marathon?" Have a great month.

My Boston marathon this year was very different from last year's experience.
This year 1 ran uninjured. I saw my husband Joe at Mile 10, and my daughters
and grandson at Mile 18, exactly where they said they'd be. The weather was
warmer (53 degrees) and sunny with no headwind, as compared to last year's
cooler temperatures.
Barbara Ende and I ran pretty much the races we wanted to, nishing at
3:32:32 and 3:40:58 respectively. Ted Pemicano was hampered by leg cramps
but still ran a 3:22:50, Ted reported a Harry Neesom sighting at Mile 6 but
lost track of him. According to the computer Harry did cross the nish line.

know, there are no shortcuts to crossing that nish
line. You must pay the price for a long enough
period of time, or cross that line, you won't.

used to behappy and interesting. All social stigmas disappear, as we all
become runners seeking the same goal. We're no longer lawyers, doctors,
teachers or housewives living according to some bogus pecking order society
has created. We revolve our days around our training schedule, giving us
